Woz looked like the fucking No. 1 for once. She was hitting winners from all over the place; so was Flavia; despite the rout, it was really high quality stuff. Most aggressive I've ever seen Woz. Well done.

They both ended with positive W/UE ratios I'm sure and each had to have had 30+ winners. Caro fulfilled her winner quote for the year at this rate.

The only one thing I regret about is that today was not a Grand Slam match versus Clijsters or S.Williams. Because if it was, Caroline would have comfortably prevailed nonetheless. Yes, this good she is. I'm not sure either of the veterans would've taken a set off Caro. Might have only pushed her to the tiebreak, perhaps, if they played near to their all-time best.

Amazing performance by Wozniacki, though the match was obviously much closer than the score suggests. Flavia was systematically unable to put a first serve in on her game points. Flavia´s main trouble is that her second serve is very weak and her groundstrokes (in particular her forehand) often lack approptiate depth.

What you absolutely need to beat Wozniacki (unless you are able to prevail in rallies with her which is the case of Kim Clijsters) is an excellent first and second serve and good agressive return to put her under pressure (i.e. Petra Kvitova has both a good serve and agressive return).

Flavia did play well but Wozniacki still comfortably outplayed her.

if Caro plays like this she's gonna trash whoever for the whole season, never seen her playing that well...on the other hand flavia did a nice job for the first 40minutes...then she run out of gas and stopped bothering to run :awww: it was so sad because in the 2nd set if she was getting defensive she simply left the point to Caro...it wouldn't have changed much if she were less tired, but probably she could have one at least the first set...i dunno, congrats to Caro and her unbelievable match. 82%. 5 aces, 0 DF.

So

35 winners
7 UEs
5 aces
0 DFs
82% first serve

That's some of the best stats I've seen in a while. And against a top 15 player.

Still wish Penneta could've kept up a little better. She started out playing some of her best tennis and the match was really enthralling up until 2-2. Lots of variety in the shot selection and some amazing retrievals on both ends. But after losing that 10-duece game, it seemed Pennetta fell apart mentally. Kinda like she thought to herself "If my best tennis isn't enough, what's the point?"

Karolina was leaning on Pennetta. These simple, slamless girls cannot stop her in these events.

The only problem is she can only really play like this against these types of opponents because they aren't really threatening off the ground or have the ability to make it uncomfortable on her FH wing.

Well, it´s pretty tough to play agressive against Na Li when she´s on, since she has certainly more power on her strokes than Wozniacki. It´s very hard to outhit Na Li. :) And Na Li definitely doesn´t hit as many short balls as Flavia did today.

She's playing like this more and more often, but it's impossible to play like this EVERY time. It's her haters that fail to see the progression. She always had a very strong foundation and now she's slowly building off of that, adding power in small doses and aggressiveness in a controlled manner. Her father is a genius. He realizes that it requires a sculptor's patience to mold her into a masterpiece while the haters here are just screaming inanely for winners with no eye on the bigger picture.

:hysteric: I can't believe how aggressive Caro was. :hysteric: What is going on?!

Strange as it may sound I think Caro's superb performance comes from her still beng a bit feverish. I know from personal experience there's a point after a fever where your body feels strangely loose and your mind completely clear and you enter a kind of twilight zone (as OP suggests) where you can do just about anything. Caro was in that zone today!
I'd love for Caro to play like this in a Grand Slam final against Kim or Serena but I'm not sure it'll happen.

It's VERY unusual for a player to post a +12 differential and end up winning only 2 games.

Caroline was just too good. A +28 differential is exceedingly rare, especially in the WTA. She was obviously pleased with her performance, and rightfully so. Great focus too, to be able to get the breaks on those long, hotly contested games. :worship:

this is how she should prove herself everytime.
For a nanosecond i forget how annoying she and her trolls are actually.

Obviously Flavia couldn't hurt her without weapons, and Woz easily overpowered her and finished any easy ball (majority of her winners, thats why looks so good the ratio).
Flavia didn't had the detrmination or stamina to run down these winners.
And of course some crucial games just killed her inside (concentration).

why?
i can call myself hater, but actually if she could put this kind of juicy stuff more and more on court... *sigh*
but there is a long way 'til she can do this against players who have game and weapons.

everybody is saying that, but i really don't get it...maybe none has seen flavia playing lately or in any case hasn't seen the previous matches...Flavia's game can hurt Caro (Flavia's mind can't win) or at least it was like that before today...see their match at RG last year, Flavia was doing everything with Caro just pushing ball back untill fla collapsed...this time Caro overpowered her and then as you said Flavia lacked of stamina and energy to run

Yes she was but how is Serena relevant in a WTA event !?

Finally Caro fans are right : GM is obssessed by winners and in that case I much prefer stick with her passive game...

Seriously this is ridiculous, Caro Woz hits 35 winners against a unharming Pennetta and suddenly everyone gets an illumination tomorrow these same people will be mocking when she only hits 6 but will still be owning the tour...

The usual GM circus... we've seen that many many times with Li Na now Caro Woz and other players.

On a second thought, I really wish Lucka had won the yesterday´s match vs. Flavia. Lucie was serving very good at this tournament and I am pretty sure Wozz would not been able to be agressive against her second serve as easily as against Flavia´s second serve.

Interesting stats: Lucie lost just five point on her serve during the whole second set vs. Flavia, but Flavia still somehow managed to break her serve once (and it was the crucial break which decided that set).

ViceUltramontain

Too bad I missed the match.
Good for her if she can keep this level of play. But let's stay calm, it's just one match. No need to compare her to Federer. Stosur played an amazing match in Charleston last year and has not been able to find that level again after. Players can't play like this all the time. But I sure hope that Caroline will improve her number of winners per match in the future. WTA needs beautiful matches and a good rivalries. I hope she can stay agressive and meet Kim in Indian Wells or Miami.

Well, hardly. There are plenty of players (power hitters) with whom Wozniacki obviously would be unable play like this (if you mean by "play like this" being agressive and hitting a lot of winners from shorter balls of an opponent).

Yes she was but how is Serena relevant in a WTA

Finally Caro fans are right : GM is obssessed by winners and in that case I much prefer stick with her passive game...

Funny, because you're usually in that boat with them, counting every winner. Then when Caro hits 35 winners you quickly jump off the boat and deny any association to your partners-in-crime

everybody is saying that, but i really don't get it...maybe none has seen flavia playing lately or in any case hasn't seen the previous matches...Flavia's game can hurt Caro (Flavia's mind can't win) or at least it was like that before today...see their match at RG last year, Flavia was doing everything with Caro just pushing ball back untill fla collapsed...this time Caro overpowered her and then as you said Flavia lacked of stamina and energy to run

yeah, Flavia has "game and weapons" for a certain type and level players.
Her 0-5 H2H against Caro speaks for itself. Has no power to hit through constantly, or not enough sharp to paint the lines constantly, and has no mind to play constantly.
coz pushing is constant.
This tells me that she has no "game" to hurt Caro.
She can win sets like today she was "almost" 4-0 up in the first, but i think thats all.

:spit: I don't dislike Caro Woz because she hits 5 winners/match... she's someone I don't connect to and will never will even if she plays superior aggression...

At least me I'm a honest hater and I willn't bandwagon because she hit 35 winners... because I know I'll not be honest.

"Real" Caro Woz fans likes Caro when she hits 35 winners and even when she hits 6 because they still consider even when she hits 6 to have played with both intelligent tactics and great variances to disrupt the opponent... which is false IMO.

As I said usual GM circus... tomorrow is a new day, a new day of hate when she reverts from these illuminated people. :bigwave:

Seriously this is ridiculous, Caro Woz hits 35 winners against a unharming Pennetta and suddenly everyone gets an illumination tomorrow these same people will be mocking when she only hits 6 but will still be owning the tour...

The usual GM circus... we've seen that many many times with Li Na now Caro Woz and other players.

Well Serena and Wozniacki have never played in a GS so that match is the only way to judge.

I have a theory that Wozniacki plays more aggressively against the Williams though...

PS This board is so obsessed with 'winners' its beyond ridiculous. There is only one statistic which matters and in this match it was Caro def Flavia 6-2; 6-0 .. Many players can go out on court and hit 30+ winners, but likely they'll spray 50+ errors .. but to hit 30+ winners with sub 10 errors is simply GOAT tennis.

 Everyone plays aggressive against the WS espescially Serena so this isn't a theory anymore.

Serena losing to Woz outside a major even by getting blown off the courts 35-7 isn't dramatic e.g. Take Sam's example in Stanford 2009 then in AO 2010 but if the Dane reiterates this in a major there we have another story...

...and no one with a rightful mind believes Serena will eat 35 winners against Caro Woz in a major.

Firstly, Lucie had plenty of chances to break Flavia´s serve, but her breakpoint conversion rate was rather poor. Secondly, I am talking about the ability to win more games on her own serve against Wozniacki.

I didn't see this match but looking at the stats I am stunned. How on earth can you play a match making 33 winners and only 21 errors and lose 2 & 0? That's insane. Was the quality really as good as these stats imply because I think its unlikely we have ever, in the open era, had a WTA level match where a player has a +12 ratio of winners to errors and yet only won two games.

Extraordinary.

What amazes me the most is that Wozniacki was able to win by such a commanding scoreline when her opponent hit 33 winners to just 21 errors. That's a plus 12 difference and that is good enough to win 90% of the time. And yet Flavia only won 2 single games. That tells me that Wozniacki must have been playing frighteningly well. Those are absolutely remarkable stats. Wozniacki has been playing at a very high standard the last 7 or 8 months but it is starting to look like she is now taking her tennis yet another level up.

Gotta say, I'm not one of the many people lodged on the Wozniacki bandwagon, but the stats from today's match was surprisingly impressive. I will admit I love her. She's pretty, she has a fun personality and she's enjoying life, which I admire greatly. I just wish as a serious tennis fan, 1) her opponents gave her more of a challenge on the regular basis, 2) she would be consistently aggressively all the time, not just every now and then, and 3) she would avoid playing so many events just to maintain her No. 1 ranking.

Other than that, I congratulate Caroline on a job well done today. If I were her, I would NOT underestimate the power of Bartoli. She's no pushover when her game is on.

Flavia made 12 winners (and barely any errors) in the first 4 games alone. Her level dropped after that - the second half of the first set was really quick (I think Caro won 14 points in a row). There were a few close games in the second set, which is how she won 53 points.
But there were also a lot of points in the second set where Flavia didn't even move to the final shot. That both increases Caro's winner count, and it decreases Flavia's error count (if she had reached for these shots, she may have gotten to some of them, but not being able to do much with them, some would surely have been counted as ue's).

A useful analogy for you: Pete Sampras totally crushed Andrei Medvedev 6:3, 6:0 in the semifinal of the 1993 ATP Tour World Championships and he seemed to be utterly unbeatable in that match. The next day he lost to Michael Stich 6:7, 6:2, 6:7, 2:6 in the final, although he didn´t probably play worse than against Medvedev (in the first three sets).

The lesson: it´s very easy to appear unbeatable against one opponent and to lose to someone else who has a completely different game style.

Very true. It's tough to compare the men vs. the women but I think it's fair to say that at that time Medvedev was a tougher opponent for Sampras than Pennetta was for Wozniacki. No disrespect intended to Pennetta but I also think that it's fair to say that Serena and Kim are on a completely different level and would have put up a much bigger fight and if Caroline had played the exact same way it may have been completely ineffectual. Each opponent is different and what works against one may be useless against another.

In the 2010 US Open Caroline was playing great, had not lost a set and appeared to be cruising to the final until she ran into Zvonareva. I believe she lost that match 6-2 6-3.

I'm a fan of Caroline but I think that overzealous fans do her much more harm on this board than any of her on court play ever will.
