Matt Cronin is an idiot who doesn't deserve any attention. I wish you could sage these threads.

His opinion is obviously biased because he would like to see Clijsters top the charts. So he would pick a system that would do just that. Had he come up with some unbiased system where arguments are not based on specific players but on objective measures, then I would be prone to listen. But not when he tailors a system that fits his beliefs.

How is his opinion biased ? A lot of people want to see Kim top the charts. She's the one with two slams right now.

I'm not sure if I agree with this article or not but I give the writer credit for presenting an alternative. So many people complain about the rankings but do not offer any solutions.

You answered that question yourself. Why even bother asking?

no no and no.actually at the moment a lot of top players suck and giving points for beating some pathetic top player is really pointless.kim should just play more tournaments or just win all the tournaments she enters, and she is going to be on the top.woznaicki deserves her number 1 spot and no1 can take that away from her.

Kim and Caro will both be at IW & Miami. There are a lot of points at stake there.
That's what sports are about. Its about now.
People trying to look at the past & rearrange things to favor Kim. She and Caro were under the same ranking system as everyone else.
Kim can go take care of business now, in Indian Wells.

See if you ca get this:- the rankings are not based solely on majors! Try this another way Player A has played 12 events (10 Premier and 2 majors) won both majors and made only 2 other QFs. Player B has played the same events - made a final of one major, the SF of the other and has won 8 of the other events. It would be ludicrous for Player A to be ranked above Player B

The rankings are based on the overall picture. And for women, a major is no more physically challenging than a Premier event.

All Kim has to do to be #1 is earn the points on the court. If she can do that, she can be #1.

What the WTA should do is bring back the bonus point system (although in a much simpler form), in which players are awarded additional points for beating highly ranked players. I would not award any additional points for beating someone outside of the top 30, but it would be easy enough to, say, give an additional 10 points for taking out a player ranked Nos. 21-30, 20 for wins over players ranked Nos. 11-20 and 30 for wins over players ranked Nos. 1-10.

In a study done by Tennis.com using the ranking and bonus-point formula from 1996, the 2010 rankings – which went Wozniacki, Zvonareva, Clijsters, Serena and Venus – would have ended up as Clijsters, Zvonareva, Wozniacki, Venus and Serena. That seems a little more in tune with the reality of the circuit and certainly warrants a look for next season.
This is a confusing mess. He is citing calculations based on a divisor system coupled with quality points, but is only suggesting a remedy involving quality points to "fix" the current ranking system. He clearly hasn't done the math. If he is serious about giving Clijsters the No. 1 ranking, he should suggest a divisor system and forget about quality points. Under his proposed system, I wouldn't be surprised if Wozniacki would be further ahead of Clijsters with the sheer number of top 30 wins she has produced over the last 12 months.

His opinion is obviously biased because he would like to see Clijsters top the charts. So he would pick a system that would do just that.Maybe. But he's focusing on the wrong thing. The ranking fifteen years ago have the same top five and we have now. The same top threee as we have now.

Seems to me his 'evidence' shows the ranking system doesn't matter. Unless you actually think being ranked #1 somehow equates to actually being the best player. Cronin knows better. He just has to write something.

Why are you referring to yourself as "every tennis fan?"

I'd rather have Caro over Kim in the rankings, than Vera over Caro. 2 Slam Finals and Pattaya....are not nearly as impressive to me as one Slam SF and 6 titles.
