I grew up in New York, although I am English and have now been living in London since 1986. But growing up in New York, the main team sport that really captured my imagination was baseball. I was a big Mets fan back in the early/mid 80s until moving back to London but I liked baseball in general. I even posponed my move back here so I could watch the 86 World Series between the Mets and the Red Sox. That was a lot of fun.

Having been back in London so long I have completely lost touch with baseball but I still miss it. Here the biggest sport is football which I find seriously boring and it has never really captured my imagination at all. Cricket is better but even that is so dull compared to baseball.

Anyway, I just wanted to get that off my chest and say I am envious of all you folks in North America that have such cool team sport to keep you entertained. And yes even the NFL is way better than anything we have in this country. In a nutshell...US sports >>>>> UK sports.

Go Phillies! Should be a good year for them ;)

This! :D

They have one of the best pitching staffs in the history of baseball, along with a killer offense. They could absolutely dominate this season if they come even close to living up to their potential and avoid injuries. It's a little sad they lost Werth, but the offense is deep enough that I think it won't hurt too badly. I'm not sure they can replace his arm.

And yet still the guys at Baseball Tonight and former players are praising him as one of baseball's all-time greats. Really? The guy is an admitted doper. I hope it's just because they're reluctant to say anything negative... but how is baseball going to clean up its image when players get a pass just because they succeeded (while on drugs)?

Yes he was, which is a relief. I kind of feel like he's shown himself to be a mental midget at times in the past, and I was worried that being with three other all-star pitchers might make him cave under the pressure. If today was any indication, he's gotten it together.

I am happy with my Red Sox

The Tigers are in first place also...but if they win the division it will be in spite of Jim Leyland - he has made some crap decisions. For example, resting players too much (and the best ones at the same time), putting a guy in for his major league debut with the bases loaded vs. the White Sox (Ruffin) thus ruining his confidence (he got bombed), pulling Furbush off the mound with 2 out in the 9th and an 8-2 lead (ruining his confidence), etc...

I've never liked him; he's an under .500 manager who lucked into a World Series title when the Marlins broke the bank. If the Tigers do blow the division lead and miss the playoffs, he at least may get fired, which would be the only good thing to come of it.

They also gave away Bourn. It's kind of sad, really. A lot of people think their GM is bucking for a job with the Phillies because he's given them so many sweet deals the last few years.

And yes, I like the way Pence plays. He's the kind of player that fits in well with this Phillies team. Another come from behind win today thanks in part to him.

It reminds me of when they acquired Doyle Alexander in '87 and he went 9-0, 1.53 down the stretch. But they traded John Smoltz for him  And Fister has waaay more years ahead of him than Doyle did.

I was watching it all unfold on MLB Network - just an epic night of baseball. No words. NO WORDS.

JV wins the pitching triple crown, Miggy Cabrera the batting title...what a season for Detroit. I hope the series with NYY is great but it will kill me if they lose to my all-time most hated team. I'm sorry, but F*CK THE YANKEES.

The Tigers-Yanks series has sure been f-ed up with the rain and with Detroit coming out of the gate looking like the Little League 2006 World Series Tigers. Crapped the bed in game 1, then squeaked by in game 2 (Avila slipping and missing the game-ending catch killed me), then won an absolute nail-biter last night.

For all of Valverde's accolades, he has been a roller coaster, much like Todd Jones, just with much more success.

Tonight is a toss up. Porcello can be great or he can suck. And I hear NYY fans are not at all enamored with Burnett. But if it goes back to NY for Game 5, I can't imagine Detroit overcoming that frigging atmosphere and pulling it off.

Yeah, I have no expectations for the Tigers for Game 5. I'd say it's pretty much over. They've had a lot of silent bats (Jackson, Avila, Betemit) and the pitching has sucked. I just hope Fister doesn't totally crap his pants.

They say that there have been 14 Game 5's in this ALDS format history and the ROAD team is 8-6, but that's irrelevant.

Yanks, BSox, Phillies, all out for World Series. This is what happens when a team stacks their lineup with older, veteran players: the payroll goes way up but these old timers burn out at the end of the season. Let's face it - the season is far too long. It should be shortened back to 154 games, a bigger strike zone should be used, and playoff games should be limited to East v West, 2 of 3 matches at most.
