No Sam to defend her points?

Tennis Observer
Feb 20th, 2011, 10:31 AM
If Sam will be part of Australian Fed-Cup team (and play in Australia against Ukraine), she have to skip Stuttgart (because R1 matches will end on Tuesday there).

-NAJ-
Feb 20th, 2011, 12:36 PM
But Sam will probably have R1 bye so i think she will play here even if she plays fed cup

Tennis Observer
Feb 20th, 2011, 07:26 PM
A bye for Sam is very unlikely, as Caro Wozniaki & Vera Zvonerva are already confirmed by the tournament!

-NAJ-
Feb 20th, 2011, 07:41 PM
there will be 4 byes!?

Tennis Observer
Feb 20th, 2011, 10:27 PM
No, check WTA Tournament Calendar (http://www.wtatour.com/page/Calendar/0,,12781,00.html) & you will find out that there are only two first round byes in Stuttgart. The only Premier events with four first round byes are in Doha & Moscow!

-NAJ-
Feb 20th, 2011, 11:19 PM
yes but in PDF WTA Tournament Calendar (http://www.wtatour.com/SEWTATour-Archive/Archive/AboutTheTour/TourCalendar_2011.pdf) stands 28 players:confused:
also in media quide is information that there will be 28 players + 4 byes

Tennis Observer
Feb 21st, 2011, 07:22 AM
I see, there are conflicting information within WTA network. But it might be possible that Stuttgart accepts only 28 players in 2011-MD (2010 draw: 30 players (http://www.wtatour.com/SEWTATour-Archive/posting/2010/717/MDS.pdf)), because they don’t play on Good Friday.

However, tournament announced 32 players for MD ( http://www.porsche-tennis.de/prod/pag/tennis.nsf/web/german-tournament_quickfacts) and lists first 29 players of WTA Singles Ranking + Goerges & Saforova as current players (http://www.porsche-tennis.de/prod/pag/tennis.nsf/web/german-current_players) (in alphabetical order):

Caroline Wozniacki (DEN)
Kim Clijsters (BEL)
Vera Zvonareva (RUS)
Samantha Stosur (AUS)
Francesca Schiavone (ITA)
Jankovic, Jelena (SRB)
Li, Na (CHN)
Williams, Venus (USA)
Radwanska, Agnieszka (POL)
Victoria Azarenka (BLR)
Williams, Serena (USA)
Peer, Shahar (ISR)
Kuznetsova, Svetlana (RUS)
Kvitova, Petra (CZE)
Pennetta, Flavia (ITA)
Kanepi, Kaia (EST)
Sharapova, Maria (RUS)
Mario Bartoli (FRA)
Pavlyuchenkova, Anastasia (RUS)
Kleybanova, Alisa (RUS)
Ivanovic, Ana (SRB)
Petrova, Nadia (RUS)
Rezai, Aravane (FRA)
Petkovic, Andrea (GER)
Wickmayer, Yanina (BEL)
Kirilenko, Maria (RUS)
Cibulkova, Dominika (SVK)
Dulgheru, Alexandra (ROU)
Martinez Sanchez, Maria Jose (ESP)
Goerges, Julia (GER)
Safarova, Lucie (CZE)

Maybe Sam can do well in Indian Wells and Miami and be second seeded and have a bye, but that is most unlikely since shes defending so much points or if Clijsters, Zvonareva and Wozniacki lose in RD1, but yet again unlikely.

Tennis Observer

After reviewing tournaments early seven top ten entries (Caroline Wozniacki ( http://www.porsche-tennis.de/prod/pag/tennis.nsf/web/english-archive_pressreleases_T11_0007_en?OpenDocument&cont=current_topnews#pagetop ) and six other Top 10 players), I became conscious that with Caro Wozniacki, Vera Zvonareva (both named on 11/25/2010 (http://www.porsche-tennis.de/prod/pag/tennis.nsf/web/german-archive_pressreleases_T10_0282_de#pagetop)) and Sam Stosur three Top 6 players have entered. According to WTA rules ( http://www.wtatennis.com/SEWTATour-Archive/Archive/AboutTheTour/rules.pdf ) (p 12 & 119) this Premier 700 tournament has either the option to increase prize money to $ 1.000K or limit Top 6 players to two.

Okay, Goerges don´t get a WC
so we can make a little speculation

Stosur will maybe withdraw because she is playing FED-Cup
would move Pironkova into the Maindraw
2 WC are for top20 players, since nearly all top20 players entered there is really no chance to use them for top20 players
and so the 2 WC´s would go to the 2 next in players = Koukie and Goerges (thats why she didn´t get a regular WC)

or is my logic wrong?

I dont know if having a bye is an advantage. Your first match is in the round of 16. Could be against Aga Radwanska, Kvitova or Petkovic!

Well, I suppose there aren't any bad players in the draw anyway, no easy way working yourself into the tournament, just deliver the goods or leave the venue

Julia G. is not on the List, but they write she will play...

Flavia now removed, but Kanepi still In the list...

Kanepi is now out of the Fed Cup, and highly probably of Stuttgart. I think that is why Goerges could get into main draw via rankings. The ranks at the Stuttgart 2011 List of Players (http://www.porsche-tennis.de/prod/pag/tennis.nsf/web/english-current_players_2011) are pre Indian Wells (¿Azarenka at 9th anyone?) and that is why Goerges is not showing. I don't know if they are going to take current or pre-Marbella/Charleston rankings into account, but according to a news post from the official Stuttgart site (http://www.porsche-tennis.de/prod/pag/tennis.nsf/web/english-archive_pressreleases_T11_0049_en?OpenDocument&cont=current_topnews#pagetop), Goerges is assured a main draw spot via rankings. Even if she doesn't get in like that, organizers still have two wildcards spots to get her in.

Julia G. is not on the List, but they write she will play...

Flavia now removed, but Kanepi still In the list...
I think they mean the top twenty wildcards won't get used, which will put Julia in.

What are they doing with the byes :help:.

Misa said on her twitter earlier this week that she was practising hard for Stuttgart, so she'll be there. She will play doubles with Hradecka.

As Anna Chakvetadze (RUS) is #1 QD (http://www.wtatennis.com/SEWTATour-Archive/posting/2011/717/QS.pdf) seed, there must be more than expected withdrawals: With Roberta Vinci (ITA), Anastasija Sevastova (LAT), Patty Schnyder (SUI), Anastasija Sevastova (LAT), Iveta Benesova (CZE) & Kimiko Date-Krumm (JPN) there are six higher ranked players than Anna on entry lists. From those named as qualifiers, Sania Mirza has withdrawn.

Opener Updated (Qualifyers).

Ahm, I don't know about Sevastova but Vinci, Benesova and Schnyder are playing Fed Cup this weekend, that is why they are out of the qualifier in Sttutgart.

Sttutgart organizers still have two WC to get some Feds participants into the draw. But Schnyder is almost certainly out as she is playing in Australia.

About Mirza, she is definitely out. According to her twitter account (http://twitter.com/mirzasania), she is at home and has "a few days off".

And... uhm... Date-Krumm is in the qualifier for Stuttgart

WTA Preview Notes ( http://www.wtatennis.com/SEWTATour-Archive/Archive/MatchNotes/2011/717.pdf) are out (opener updated):

Kaia Kanepi, Flavia Pennetta & Klara Zakopalova withdrawn
No Top 20 WC used
Julia Göges, Roberta Vinci & Anastasija Sevastova are in MD

@-NAJ-:
Nice thing is that I learn something new every day: As these three Top 6 players entered into Porsche Cup when 2011 Commitments for Top 10 were determined, the tournament does not have to increase the prize money, because these players didn't call the option to opt out at the start of the year with no penalty.
