Odds On

http://www.sonyericssonwtatour.com/namedImage/12781/player_130533.jpg http://www.sonyericssonwtatour.com/namedImage/12781/player_310577.jpg http://i42.tinypic.com/54wpxc.jpg

For the first time, perhaps ever, the top two players in the game are also the top two favourites for the Slam. Kirilenko and Myskina have been extremely impressive so far on plexi, Myskina has won a major, whilst MK is still searching for that elusive breakthrough, it would be an epic final should they meet, but there are many other players in with a chance, like Zvonareva, who seems poised to act as a spoiler should MK/Nastya fail. She's a former finalist here and is in great form, this trio will certainly be very tough to stop in the early stages.

Solid Bets

http://www.sonyericssonwtatour.com/namedImage/12781/player_130548.jpg http://entimg.msn.com/i/150/ce/BritneySpears_150x200.jpg http://i56.tinypic.com/288pq9g.jpg

Despite failing to impress so far on plexi, Molik can never be counted out. The ATC legend has 4 aces, and whilst her usual gameplan isn't as successful as it once was, she has the potential to beat anyone, she's been a finalist here 4 times, and a 5th appearance should not be dismissed. Britney is the reigning Queen of the Australian Open, and like Molik, has yet to show her true class on this surface, but she has only played one match against someone other than Henin, so she's an unknown quantity and could be very dangerous, which brings us finally to the Belgian 'newbie', Henin has shown she can be a nuisance to the top players, and if they fail to take their chances, she looks primed to sneak in and steal the spotlight.

Outside Chance

Venus Ready for Australian Open
Williams set to face #1 Anastasia Myskina in the opening round
http://www.wtnphotos.com/data/505/2002_I2109738.jpg
Venus Williams gives a press conference before the Australian Open begins.
*
MELBOURNE -- World's #13 Venus Williams has arrived in Melbourne for the Australian Open. It will be Williams' first Grand Slam event on the ATC tour.
*
Williams started the year off strongly, reaching the finals in Auckland. She was blitzed in the final by Maria Kirilenko and then lost in the opening rounds in her next two events.
*
"It's been a rather shaky start to the year," Venus said of her three match losing streak. "It was weird to win three matches in a row, first event, and then to lose the last three. It can be frustrating because I'm always putting in 100%."
*
Her 100% will have to come into effect early at the Australian Open, if she wants to do well. She opens against Sydney champion and world's #1 Anastasia Myskina. "It's not the best draw I could have asked for," Williams admitted. "But since I am unseeded, I would have been facing a seed no matter what. I guess it's better to start at the top."
*
Williams can take note that she did beat Myskina in the Auckland semi finals earlier this year. "I guess it helps, but really Anastasia just won in Sydney, so she's another player than she was in Auckland. The top players always know how to step it up in these big events. That's why they're the top players. I just hope to play my game. If I do, the result will be obvious. But Myskina will be tough, she's not #1 for anything."
*
Williams and Myskina are expected to open play on Rod Laver arena on Tuesday.

Venus Rising: Williams Upsets #1 Myskina
Unseeded Williams Set to Face Defending Champ in Quarter Final
http://img.ezinemark.com/imagemanager2/files/30002496/2011/01/2011-01-11-13-32-18-1-venus-williams-dazzled-with-an-eye-catching-costu.jpeg
Venus Williams turns to her camp after beating #1 Anastasia Myskina 7-6 4-6 7-6 in the first round of the Australian Open.
*
MELBOURNE -- Day one, match one and the number one is out.
*
World's #1 and top seeded Anastasia Myskina had a lot going into the first match of the Australian Open. She won the warm up in Sydney last week and was looking for another strong run this week at the Australian Open. That all came to a hault after the first match on Rod Laver Arena when unseeded Venus Williams stunned the top seed 7-6[5] 4-6 7-6[4] to advance to the quarter finals.
*
"I'm just thrilled to have gotten through," Venus said on court in an interview with Australian television afterwards. "I wanted this win more than anything. Myskina played a great match."
*
The first set featured many long, exciting rallies as Myskina seemed to get back every ball Williams thought she had hit for a winner. They exchanged early breaks but remained on serve until the tie break, where Williams just edged Myskina with a one point difference.
*
"I don't know how I got that tiebreak, if I'm honest," Venus admitted after the match. "It seemed like we were so close. It's a shame one had to lose that set because it was so close."
*
The second set started off for a bang for the top seed Myskina, as she broke right away and never looked back. She never faced a break point as she went on to the set 6-4.
*
"I kind of lost my concentration early," Venus said. "I mean, I just won the first set against the best player in the world at my first Grand Slam. I let up and she's clearly going to fight with every thing she has."
*
The third set, Venus seemed went up an early break at 3-1, but Myskina rallied for a 5-4 lead in the third set. Venus served twice to stay in the match and held to love and 15 in those games. In the tiebreak, she won 7-4 to close out the victory.
*
"Yea, those games when I served to stay alive were key, but I just dug deep. I have a serve that shouldn't be broken very often, I just told myself that," Venus recalls. "And in the tiebreak, I just felt like I had to be aggressive. If I was going down, it would be playing my aggressive style."
*
Venus was very nice to Myskina as well, "It's a tough break, in a major you know? Everyone wants to win and do their best. I have no doubt that she'll rebound and win many more slams and beat me on the way," she smiled.
*
In the quarter finals, Venus is matched up against #6 seeded Britney Spears, who is the defending champ. "I've never played her before, but she knows what it takes to win a big event, so I'll have to be ready."

Q. How do you explain the loss?
DOMINIKA CIBULKOVA: Had no believe and courage to win it today. That it is. I don't think she played well, I think she played ok.

Q. What disappointed you about your game? Any particular thing?
DOMINIKA CIBULKOVA: I would say my serve, but then again, her serve wasn't better, so yes I would say serve.

Q. You kept hitting your hip. Did that slow down your movement at the end of the match?
DOMINIKA CIBULKOVA: No. My movement was alright all the time, wouldn't you know.

Q. Is there anything about her game maybe that changed since you faced her last time?
DOMINIKA CIBULKOVA: No, not really. Her backhand was better then I remember maybe, I don't know.

Q. Looking back to previous game, Venus Williams had a tough job against Anastasia Myskina. What you think about loss of no.1?
DOMINIKA CIBULKOVA: I am shocked. But not that Myskina didn't won, but by the fact I used to think she was a pusher. Venus game is all about pushing and moonball you to death. It was horrible match to begin with and Venus attitude wasn't helping either. She was crying and shouting after losing that set to Myskina "I will retire, you all will see, I will retire!.". God is she related to Serena?

Shvedova ended Vera's dream.

http://i38.tinypic.com/2eobfy8.jpg

Vera Zvonareva was a big favorite of Australian Open. She was, because in her first match in Melbourne she wasn't able to overcome a determined newcomer, Yaroslava Shvedova from Kazakhstan. Yaroslava won her first match in Tour after marvelous battle

"I had nothing to lose. I remember our first meeting in Auckland, where I lost to her. So yesterday I just played my best tennis" Shvedova said. "I should finished this match in 2 sets, but I'm happy that she didn't catch me in the 3rd part of match.

Yaroslava's win over Vera was her first win since her debut in tour. In previous 3 matches she lost to Zvonareva, Myskina and probably the most painful loss in Sydney last week to Alicia Molik.

"I don't even want to think about this match. I'm really devastated that I lost after leading in last set 5-0. I hope that I will never do the same thing in future" Yarka said.

Today she faces to Russian superstar Maria Sharapova.

At the end of meeting with press Shvedova said: "I will try to win this. I've never played against her, I've even never seen how she plays. But I will not give up before the match. If she wants to play in semifinals she will show something more than only her scary screams".

Williams Waxed: Spears Beats Venus
Defending Champ Through to Semis in Two Sets
http://www.wtnphotos.com/data/505/2001_img_2703.jpg
Venus Williams reacts to missing a shot in the quarter finals of the Australian Open. Britney Spears beat Williams 63 63.
*
MELBOURNE -- Venus Williams' run in her first ever Grand Slam has come to an end in the quarter finals, after being beat 6-3 6-3 by #6 seeded Britney Spears, the defending champ.
*
"Nothing really worked out there for me today," Venus said after the match. "I tried, but Britney was just too good today. I wish her luck going forward trying to win her second straight Australian Open."
*
Venus said that her long match over world's #1 in the previous round might of played into the match today. "It was so long yesterday against Myskina. Physically and mentally maybe I spent too much energy in that match. I'm still new to the tour, so I'm learning how to cope. I'll be back though."
*
Off court, it seems like Venus and Dominika Cibulkova have been having a war of words. "I think she's a nice girl, but she shouldn't go around calling people pushers. She has no idea what game plan is. She comes up to my hips, I'm pretty sure I can hit the ball harder than she can." Venus said afterwards. "It's harmless. If anything, it adds spice to the tour."
*
Venus is next scheduled to play during the clay season, which she said she was excited for.
*
"Clay isn't my best surface, but I will always give 100% in all of my matches."

Australian Open favorite Maria Kirilenko crashed out in the first round for a second year in a row on Tuesday and has found comfort amongst friends and family in Disney World, a safe haven for Mickey Mouse champions everywhere. MK release a statement on Wednesday:

"I'm accepting that a Mickey Mouse Queen is who I'm meant to be and I'm going to embrace it. I have my own castle here (Editors Note: See behind Kirilenko in picture) and I have wonderful memories at Amelia Island, Quebec City, Birmingham, Auckland and Gold Coast. I don't need a slam to live or to be happy, I need Mickey Mouse titles to breathe. I'm looking forward to my next tournament in Amelia Island"

Maria Sharapova out! Yarka will fight for the final!!!

http://www.wtatour.com/javaImages/fd/20/0,,12781~8790269,00.jpg

Unseeded Russian Yaroslava Shvedova won another match in Australian Open. After shocking win against Vera Zvonareva, in quarterfinal she defeated Maria Sharapova, who had plan to win SF's match against Tamarine. Now her plan will have to wait for another opportunity to be used.

Yaroslava Shvedova proved to be the giantkiller in the Australian Open. After threw out Vera Zvonareva in first round, she outplayed Maria Sharapova in QF. Match was epic, and the final result could be different than 6-7(4) 7-6(7) 7-6(5).

"Maria was a tough opponent," Yarka said. "But I think my short experience let me win another 3-setter. I played few such matched since my debut, and now I was ready to play another one. I'm happy that I was able to stay calm to the end and win this one. Semifinal in my first Slam is big achievement."

Now Shvedova is preparing to another battle. On her way to final she faced to Tamarine Tanasugarn, who easily won with British Watson.

"It will be another tough match. I'll try again to play my best".
