View Full Version : Why is Capriati still at no. 3?! What has she done?!

I haven't been following tennis, and on top of that, I have heard nothing about Jennifer. I know she has accumulated lots of points, but shouldn't she be losing them because she definitely has not matched her success of last year. Does she still not have a title for the year?! Anyway, I am no ranking expert... by far!

...Wait, did she win the Australian?! I forgot who won it. Oh yeah, it was her, right. Anyway, I forgot.

She's number 3 because the rankings are stupid. Plain & Simple.

Cappy only won one less tournament this year than last year. Look, we all should know by now that the rankings reward players for playing, not necesarily for winning much. Throw a GS win in between lots of mediocre results and voila, #3 ranking. Thats the way the sytem works.

Jen has had a very solid year (apart from since the US Open) and rather than criticise her for being #3 with those results, why not criticise #4-#10 for not doing any better?

Jennifer had solid and consistant results at the beginning of the year. It was from Wimbeldon onward that she begun having problems.

If you gave her results to someone else, I thnk you could say that, but this year for her is not as "solid" as her previous year. I think this year is a disappointment compared to last year... I mean last year, Jen was bothering me because she was beating all my favorites and I hated to see her name on the same side of the draw as someone I like!! This year, I didn't have that apprehension of "Omigod, she's a threat, my player has no chance and will lose."

Yeah, but 2001 was a fantastic year for her compared to any other year she has played. It was way above her usual standards, so I do think that 2002 has been a 'solid year'. It has been her best year apart from last year since 1993.

True... okay, solid and last year was spectacular...

When will Kimmy have her spectacular year?!

Capriati deserves the #3 position. Her losing in the first rounds at some of these events is just like Serena skipping these events - neither get points for it.

Just because she had a few bad losses doesn't discredit her ranking...she has deservedly done much to earn it.

Oct 25th, 2002, 06:16 PM
BTW - if not Capriati, then who? Mauresmo had quite a few "bad" losses early in the year...

Justine and Kim as well....

Davenport missed the first 8 months

(ps - i do not care for jennifer, so this is not a biased opinion)

I don't think this thread is fair to her at all ..if the rankings system merely rewards players for playing and not necessarily winning ..then why don't the girls below her overtake her ...god knows most of them play way more tournaments than she does ....what do you folks want her to do ..give them some of her points, doubt whether the computer will allow that .......

Who aside from Venus and Serena, should be ranked higher?

I'd be interested to hear a solid arguement on this one - because well, there isn't one (appologies to Monica who got injured, and Amelie of course)

The Australian Open will be a turning point for everybody in the rankings. If Jen doesn't win (and chances are ... none) she will lose a huge amount of points and will start going down in the rankings fast. On the other hand, if Serena wins and given the fact that she didn't accumulate any points this years because she didn't play, she will so high up in the rankings that she'll have her numbe one spot guaranteed for a long, long time. If Venus makes it to the finals she'll also go much higher because she didn't do well this year.

An the others, well, they'll just hang around trading places with each other.

By looking at her results before the US open its great but not many title wins but since the US open 1-3 win/loss is not a top 3 player!

Actually VSfan, you're right. Cappy deserves #3 basically by default. The top ten players this year clearly are the top 2 and the little 8. After Serena and Vee, you can throw the rest in a bag and take a pick. Injuries to davey and hingis had something to do with the fact that no one has risen to challenge Cappy position. Justine Novatna and Kim Clijsters are too erratic. Momo seemed to be getting it together, but has been slowed by injury lately. Strange year for the chase pack of the WTA.

Capriati is ranked number 3, because she's the third best player of the past 52 weeks. It's really not that difficult.

The ranking system is alright, stop bitching about it. The ones who cry for the rankings are usually the ones with the lower ranked faves.

Anyways... Up untill the FO, Jenn has beem the 2nd best player of the year. At that points something went wrong, & she became the 4th best... Whats the average of 4 & 2? 3. Voila :p

Well, I feel like she's number 3 because she has gotten to alot of qtrs, semis and finals. It's all a numbers game so I guess they all even out.

I guess some feel it's kind of odd that she is no.3 and she hasn't won a title since the beginning of the year. It should be questioned, but I don't think it's impossible. Hell, Martina wen't for a while being #1 and not winning a slam in years.

If Jennifer should lose to Alexanda Stevenson in the AO, she will fall out of the top 10. So watch out Jenny.

(She has well over 1000 pts to defend)

Cap is #3 because of her fluke win at the Aus open. Aside from that her results have been on par with the rest of the top 10 below her. When she loses there next year her ranking will drop down to where it belongs...

Even if she loses in the first round to Nathalie Tauziat, she won't fall out of the Top Ten. Get your facts straight, please.

well, Linsay and Hingis are injured.....

#4 Momo only reached SF twice in Slams..
and didnt even got to QF in her favourite Clay Slam....
though she did win a Tier I in Canada,
but it's too different from the Slam........
and the rest of the TOP 10 are too inconsistent,
Monica reached 3 QF and 1 SF which is in Australia,
she only played 14 events but reached at least QF except 1,
and Hantchova is just rising......
but from now on, i dont really see her going
any higher than this..........
last yr w/ 2 Slams and being #1 is pretty good......
but this yr.....she got lucky with TOP 3 materials
injured and inconsistent players in TOP 10,
she is there for pretty much the whole yr.....

Well, that's with Lindsay out, and anyway Jennifer had the 3rd best season so far of any players. Momo had a chance to topple her but got injured. Monica had a chance too, but she got injured too. So all credit to Jennifer for staying healthy enough to maintain her ranking.

She's #3 because she won the Australian Open. If she doesn't win the Australian Open, she won't be #3 anymore. Or she could concievably win it again and slip to #4.
