HENRIKSSON AIMS HIGH IN PARIS

http://www.studio68.no/100706_SOW_allgurin_vs_dulko_11_tn.jpg

Mia Henriksson has a tough draw in Paris but it hasnt stopped the bubbly Swede setting high expectations for the week. She faces wildcard Rita Cebolla, but could go on to face 2nd seeded Ruflina Taliamanosoko in the second round.

Q: You again did well for your team in Fed Cup?

Mia: I was very happy with the week, we never believed we would lose. We knew we were the best team and refused to go down to Botswana. Me and Siri are the only girls in the team at the moment, for some reason Alina Patersson doesnt play, so we know its up to us to deliver and I think we did that.

Q: What do you hope for in Paris?

I hope for as many points onto my ranking as possible, I want big things to happen this year! I am determined to shake up the tour and make an impact. I have done that already in doubles and I dont see why the same cant happen in singles.

Q: After returning from Australia you did lots of photoshoots, is this a distraction from the game?

Mia: Not at all, it took little time and was for the tour anyway so I dont think it is a issue at all. Im one of the hardest workers on tour and practice was not affected. I love doing the photoshoots though, it makes a nice break from the tour and you get to look real good.

Singles Results, Second Round

Athea Kane def. [1]Sylvie Bailly 1/6, 7/6(3), 6/2
Sylvie was all over this match and then suddenly something happened and she fell apart. We hope she's okay.

Marteena Huubere def. [5]Siri Cornetsson 7/6(5), 6/4
Marteena advances to the quarters and takes out Fed Cup hero Siri.

Ella Felivitch def. Fleri Hingisafrilia 6/4, 7/5
Fleri was disappointed after this loss, but Ella hasn't had too good of a start of 2011 so she was very eager.

[4]Giuseppina Benedetti def. Elise Mesane 7/6(3), 7/6(4)
It's been years since Elise has beaten Giusa and it wasn't happening today as she was just too tough in the tiebreaks.

[3]Ziyi Zianzhi def. [WC]Regla Torres 6/7(3), 7/6(5), 7/5
Ziyi seems unstoppable lately. This is her 8th win in a row and it was pretty epic against an epic player.

Daria Afanasyeva def. Elena Skankhova 4/6, 6/4, 7/6(5)
Daria just seems to be zooming past these experienced players.

Sabine Graf def. Clari McKrain 1/6, 7/6(3), 6/2
Clair was hoping to build off of her incredible Australian Open but Sabine wanted it too much.

[2]Ruflina Taliamanosoko def. [WC]Rita Cebolla 7/5, 6/4
The newcomer couldn't handle the long experienced veteran today.

Ziyi hits double digits in Paris

Friday 11 February 2011
Paris, France-- Chinese world no. 1 Zianzhi Ziyi’s win streak continues, as she battled past good friend and former doubles partner Regla Torres, entering the quarter-finals of the Parisian indoor hard court event, the first tournament since the Australian Open.

Zianzhi seems determined to make a statement with her newly earned ranking and will hope to assert herself by reaching the semis when she takes on local talent Daria Afanasyeva. Since making a run for the title of the Australian Open Zianzhi has not lost a match. She won consecutive singles Fed Cup matches to help China break into the semi-finals in their debut, before winning two more here in Paris. Added to the 6 it took to claim the Australian Open, Zianzhi sits comfortably on a 10-match winning streak.

Next up for Zianzhi, she will take on the last French woman standing in the round of eight, a woman who battled a similarly long 2nd round match yesterday.
On her opponent in the quarter-finals:
“She hasn’t been playing all that long, but she’s definitely someone to look out for. She seems to go out there fearless and un-intimidated, which is a mature response for someone who hasn’t been on the tour very long. I remember starting out; I could barely win a match because I was so nervous playing against the “big name” players. It took a while to really get used to match conditions. She’s done a real good job thus far. She’ll also have the crowd on her side tomorrow, so I’ll need to keep focussed and play my game.”

Afanasyeva made the third round of the Australian Open, her grand slam debut. This is her career-best result in a tour level tournament.

Singles Results, Quarterfinals

Athea Kane def. Marteena Huubere 7/6(3), 4/6, 7/6(0)
Athea is like this - quite and then all of a sudden BAM she is on fire. Marteena was playing well today too, but Athea just had the right shots at the right time.

Ella Felivitch def. [4]Giuseppina Benedetti 7/5, 3/6, 6/4
Despite having a losing record against Giusa, Ella steadied herself for a brilliant win and her first semifinal in a while.

[3]Ziyi Zianzhi def. Daria Afanasyeva 6/4, 3/6, 7/6(1)
Wow - we haven't seen a streak like this since Larissa Ferrer, the all time FWTT great. Ziyi beats the crowd favorite against a boisterous crowd and a fiery teenager in a tight three setter and now faces the godmother of FWTT - Ruflina.

[2]Ruflina Taliamanosoko def. Sabine Graf 7/5, 7/5
Well, this is the 20th time these two tour originals have played on tour (including the 2001 Wimbledon finals). Believe it or not, but this is just Ruflina's 8th win in the series compared to Sabine's 12 wins.

[1]Bartoli/Kartincova def. McKrain/Skankhova 6/2, 7/5
Luna and Martine had a dreadful defense in Melbourne and are hoping to recoup some of their points here in Paris.

[4]Casanova/Taliamanosoko def. Benedetti/Raymond 7/6(5), 6/7(3), 7/6(0)
Giusa had to play two marathon matches and came out on the losing end twice. Jennifer and Ruflina started out 2011 great but have floundered in the semifinals since then. Will Paris break that trend?

[5]Felivitch/Mesane def. Graf/Huubere 1/6, 6/, 6/4
Sabine and Marteena really wanted to win after their singles loss but they had to go against the premier elite of Ella and Elise and couldn't do the job.

Hingisafrilia/Pryde-Degman def. [2]Bailly/Wachiramanowong 7/6(1), 6/7(1), 7/6(3)
Could it be that Fleri and Kath are back? They upset the second seeded team and favored Sylvie in dramatic fashion.

Zianzhi overcomes local hope to set up blockbuster semi-final

Saturday, 12th February 2011
Paris, France-- Zianzhi Ziyi battled through a tough three set match against newcomer Daria Afanasyeva, setting up a blockbuster semi-final clash with former world number 1 Ruflina Taliamanosoko.
While Zianzhi extended her win streak to eleven on Friday, she will have to pick it up a notch if she is to defeat Botswana’s veteran. Taliamanosoko is yet to drop a set in Paris, while Zianzhi has battled consecutive three setters. Despite playing an overwhelming amount of tennis lately, Zianzhi insists she feels good physically and well prepared for every match.
“This is what we do for a living. If you can’t compete at a good level for more than a week, inconsistency can become a problem. It’s important to play your best tennis at the right moments and ensure you do enough to get through to the next round. It’s always a challenge, especially with the depth in the women’s game nowadays. It wasn’t this competitive say, nine or ten years ago. There are so many new players looking to break into the tour. It’s a great sign for women’s tennis.”

Zianzhi and her semi-final opponent Ruflina Taliamanosoko are squared at 3-all in their head-to-head series. Those six matches have also followed a distinctive pattern, with Zianzhi triumphing on the first three occasions, while Taliamanosoko has beaten Zianzhi in their most recent three. In fact, Zianzhi has not beaten Taliamanosoko is over two years. They have met only once in a grand slam (2009 US Open) and have played just one final, last year in New Haven.
“We didn’t play much last year and it’s been a while since New Haven. Tomorrow’s a different match, and we obviously both want to get to the final here in Paris. It should be a good match, I’m looking forward to it.”

Zianzhi is a former champion (2008), while Taliamanosoko reached the final in 2009. Taliamanosoko is also former champion in doubles.

Athea moves on to her first final in quite some time. It was a tremendous opportunity for both players, but Ella succumbed to the net play of Kane in the second set tiebreaker.

[3]Ziyi Zianzhi def. [2]Ruflina Taliamanosoko 6/4, 0/6, 6/3
Ziyi is putting all those demons to rest in 2011. After winning the Australian Open (after consecutive grand slam final losses) she defeats Ruflina after three consecutive losses. She went on walkabout in the second set, but came back strong in the end to secure another win and another final.

Kane revives her love for Paris.
http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_X_d6JjJ00I4/R7fLxIw1eyI/AAAAAAAALWY/oz6WzGV2WEU/s400/mya.jpg

Roland Garros champion Athea Kane who is still trying to find her winning form has reached her first final since Eastbourne last season. After winning her first grand slam and reaching the n1 position for a week, she never looked the same.
"I'm thrilled to be in another final, especially after some tough matches. The crowd is really helping this week. I guess winning Roland Garros made me one of the Frenchies favorites."

The Kenyan is well aware of who is her next opponent as she will takes on Ziyi Zianzhi, this year's Australian Open winner, who is on a huge winning streak since winning the first Grand Slam of the year.
"She's always been a top player and as far as i'm concerned, i don't think i ever won a set against her. But she took it to another level this year and it will be tough to stop her. I have nothing to lose though. So hopefully i can make this competitive."

This season will be interesting for Kane: Was her rise to the top an instant firework? Can she get back to her slam winning form?
"What i have for myself is that i achieved a lot already so anything more is a bonus. And you have a lot less pressure on your shoulder when you have proved yourself that you could be great at what you do."

"I still wanna win this title though, badly."

[3]Ziyi Zianzhi def. Athea Kane 6/3, 4/6, 7/6(4)
Ziyi has turned into an iron woman. We've lost count of the number of matches she's won in a row (and against high quality opponents too) and becomes the first player of 2011 to win two tournaments. This is a rare feat so early in the year. The number 1 player in the world looks to have secured her place there for some time. Meanwhile, Athea put up a valiant effort and came close to regaining her momentum that propelled her to the top spot last year, but fell short by a few points.
