Tremendous win for Li to hold on and make it to her first ever grand slam final. She came out playing straight into Wozniacki's hands, making bucket loads of errors and allowing Wozniacki to play her game. She turned it up marginally in the second after saving a match point and hitting her stride to eventually take the second set 7-5. She played solidly, showing impressive consistency in some tiring points in the third set and eventually was just too powerful for Wozniacki.

As a side note, is there anyone else out there who as a spectator is infuriated with Li's mental inconsistency? She comes out as one of the nervier big match players, but as soon as she's down, she some how comes up with the mental fortitude to claw back into the match.

omg li na i only left you for dead about 20 times this match. i couldn't even watch the 3rd set after woz broke her. went to the wash dishes and came back to see her up 4-2, only to get broken... but then i got to see her win :hearts:

omfg. wozniacki choked though xD totally choked that second set away. i guess her mental strength finally failed her.

WIN THIS SHIT.

That's why Wozniacki is not a true champion. Instead of burying Li when she was floundering, she did nothing. You keep someone like Li around long enough and she will get hot and burn you.

She has no killer shot and no killer instinct. Does not want to end points at all.

Caroline flushed this match down the toilet. She should not have lost.

Wozniacki did a very good job luring Li into her pusher mode, and Li got nervous and started hitting errors. Luckily she got out of it and managed to control her nerves and found back to her game. Very good result for tennis and very nice to finally have a Chineese woman playing in a slam final!

Hard pill to swallow after having had match point in second set. Had Caroline won that match point, she would've been deserving as she was totally the better player at that point. But after Wozniacki checked out mentally and Na Li raised her game, it was a deserving win for Li.

Caroline will be kicking herself after this one, that's for sure.

On the bright side, this is shaping up to be one of the best slams in ages with some epic matches.

I feel for Caro, she did play agressive during the first set and a half...but went back to her pusher self letting Na back into the match. The third set was very monotone, seemed like they were playing the same point over and over again .

Big congrats to Na Li fans and good luck to Caro..she can hit way harder than she does...needs to realize being so passive is not gonna get her any slam.

Pushing to win isn't the way to go, and never deserves a spot in a slam final.

keen to know the statistics of the match

Here's all you need to know-

Caro got broken in 6 of her last 7 games, and Li hit 4 times as many winners.

C. W. Fields
Jan 27th, 2011, 04:30 AM
Caro was just 1 point from winning 6-3, 6-4 but she played the MP too nervously. That was one of two major differences between the two players; Caro got nervous and too careful on the most important points while Lina loosened up and dared go for her winners, and succeeded. The other major difference was in serve and ROS. Despite having the faster serve Caro was unable to put Lina under real pressure with her 1st serves and lost her last 3 serve games. She had no aces the whole match and Lina came up with some incredible ROSs on very important points, particularly at 4-3 40-0 2nd set when Caro looked to be closing out the match.
Lina was the most courageous player and deserves the win, congrats to her.
Caro, you poor girl. You must be devastated, being just 1 point from your first AO final. If only you had dared go for a little more on MP.

scoobz
Jan 27th, 2011, 04:30 AM
I'm really happy Li because she had to fight through her demons and her nerves to turn that around from MP down, that's really hard to do.

She had to get her game under her control and get the balance between aggression and solidity right, and she managed that in the end.

Caro, well...it's not like she played badly, and she was at times more aggressive, but still, in a 2 hr 30 match only 10 winners, none at all in the final set? I have no problem with defensive tennis or pushing tennis if it's for a purpose but even with that gameplan, you do need to go for the ball sometimes, and 10 winners out of 90 odd points won is just...it's not enough....you can't beat the best out there playing purely defense...she needs to develop a more offensive mindset out there and then pick her times to go for it more in tight moments.

I can't believe my eyes. Congratulations to Li Na. She was amazing out there against Wozniacki. She just wouldn't quit and she fought so hard. She's a hell of a competitor and she deserves her place in the final. I kinda feel for Wozniacki, because I know she wanted to kind get the critics off her back about winning a slam, but she's young, and she'll have more opportunities.

On the other hand, I was glad that for once, SOMEONE tested Wozniacki's limits. She's not an overpowering kind of player, and yet she wins her matches so easily, because her opponents are so fragile. That wasn't the case this time around. I think Caroline needs to be tested more before she starts winning slams. It would be better that way.

Nonetheless, I'm proud of Li Na for fighting so hard, and competing at her highest ability. She deserves the win, and because she's worked so hard to get where she is, it would be wonderful to see her win her 1st grand slam title. Congrats to both players. They're both winners.

Jan 27th, 2011, 04:31 AM
This match reminded me of Caroline's match against Dokic in 2009. I had the exact same feeling, if Li would step it up just a LITTLE bit, Caroline would not handle it.

Li's drive volleys are a shame. :( They are pretty much non-existant, she failed to hit most of them in the corners, let alone put them away. It helped Caro get back in lots of rallies, but I have to add that, at least during the first and second sets, Wozniacki played the best defense I've seen since probably Jankovic in 2008. Wozniacki would be THE GOAT, if she had the ability to dictate the points. She's got the serve, movement, mentality.

As for Na... I think she got a bit lucky out there. She went for broke on the match point, I think because she had kind of given up somewhat, she really did not seem to be ready to fight it out, but then she saved the match point and suddenly she realized that she was anything but out of it. I'm glad she played good tennis in the final set, and I liked the last rally because she actually broke Caro's forehand down by constantly hitting to it, instead of going for a random low% winner.

i disagree. wozniacki gave everything she had those first 2 sets and was pushing na li back. not to mention her defense was great. she ran out of steam in that final set.I agree that Wozniacki was playing close to her best in the first two sets, especially the second set. Even with Wozniacki at her best, and Na playing pretty much her worst tennis of the tournament, Na still managed to stay in touch. But Na lifted her game in the nick of time, and Wozniacki couldn't do anything about it.

Wozniacki is the player who is mentally the strongest in WTA. No doubt about it. In that sense she truly is amazing. Apart from that she has a decent serve, a half decent backhand and the rest is pushing hoping the opponent will miss. If she faces an opponent who is playing good controlled aggression and doesn't choke she finds herself in big trouble. She also doesn't like players who can put great spin on the ball like Stosur. She doesn't think that is a woman's game cause she can't push so effectively against it. So for me she is a player who is very strong mentally, but who I would never dream of spending money to watch. If I didn't have a financial interest in it I would probably not even turn on the TV. It's just too boring to watch. Hopefully they won't be teaching kids this kind of game cause it would be the end of tennis. People want to watch good attacking tennis and not this rubbish.

so much for caro being mentally strong... :tape:

As much as I ended up thinking Na Li deserved to win this match after turning the tables and starting to dictate, I'll have to root against Na Li in the final. It'll simply be too hard to watch her raise the trophy after Caroline had matchpoint against her in the semi. I'll be like "One point, and that trophy would've been yours, Caroline you stupid fuck" So please, for the sake of all that is holy, may Clijsters/Zvonareva win the final. Then I'll just tell myself Wozniacki would've lost it too and then the only real difference between semi and final here would be the prize money which I couldn't care less about. #1 was secured after she won QF after all.

Sad for Wozniacki  Although she's not a favorite of mine, it must be just gutting to lose that after having a match point, points to send the second to a TB, and up an early break in the third. Hope she recovers from this. She's a nice girl, and I really do respect her consistency.

But SO excited for Li Na! What an opportunity! And when she is on, her game is beautiful. It will be an interesting final.

Wozniacki played her absolute best in the first two sets, she was hitting forehand winners, returning really well, anticipating really well and putting Na in a lot of awkward positions. Na on the other hand was playing quite controlled (Like against Petkovic, which was never going to work against Wozniacki).

I am glad she started taking more risk late in the second set and played extremely well in the clutch situations (especially down mp).

As much as I ended up thinking Na Li deserved to win this match after turning the tables and starting to dictate, I'll have to root against Na Li in the final. It'll simply be too hard to watch her raise the trophy after Caroline had matchpoint against her in the semi. No it wouldnt have, tennis is about matchups too, Na has the weapons to power through Kim, does Wozniacki?

Its like saying, 'if Dementieva had taken that matchpoint against Serena in Wimbledon 2009 semifinal, she would've won the title'.

Great match with lots of good play and dramas although sloppy at times. Na didn't play as good as her previous match and got so nervous. Credit to Woniacki, she hit a lot better today. Agressive defense, hardly giving any free points until later in the match. But it's hard to see her as a number one player with her style of play. Imagine 2 boxers playing, if one boxer plays defense, having his face punched a tons and hardly punch back, then at last win the match b/c his opponent miss more. it's not a good scence that a champion with his swollen face and the loser standing up hardly any damage , is it?

You can rationalize it all you want but if Na Li ends up with the trophy I'll be thinking it could've been Caro's if she had just taken that matchpoint in the semi. That'll be a stake through the heart. So as much as I like Na Li, she simply must lose the final or I'll never be able to forgive Caro for that missed matchpoint  If Clijsters (or Zvonareva) makes mincemeat out of Na Li in the final, it'll be so much easier to accept.

I was like, really, is it going to be this easy? But of course it wasn't and the rest of the match I just kept thinking she wasted her chance. Caro was playing pretty much at full capacity in the majority of the first two sets...she looked really solid and relaxed with the occasion. However, I've said it before, you don't win a grandslam with the mentality of waiting for the opponent to hit the error. Yes she can win 100's of matches with that mentality, however it doesn't get you through the big moments.

I would cheer for Na anyway, but this will make me cheer for her harder :D

Caroline probably played her best possible tennis for the first 1.5 sets and played with some aggression I didn't think she had, but reverted back to type at match point. I did feel the match was always on Na's racket though. It's incredible to think that Na could appear so mentally fragile for so much of the match, just missing everything, and then somehow turn into a beast from match point down.

Congrats to Na Li anyway, her interviews are legendary. I'm pretty sure the Sam Smith got the anniversary date wrong, I think both she and her husband appeared to think it was the 29th, and I would trust their accuracy over the media guide's anyday :p

I am actually heartbroken. I never knew tennis could hurt so much...i would have preferred a quick match where Caro won 4-5 points...i feel so...numb. Actually just cried which i've never done after any Caro loss.

Huge congrats to Na though, I am actually delighted for her. She's an inspiration and I wish her the best of luck for the final. :-)She is 20, and this happens to everyone. Serena was serving 4-2 40-0 in the 3rd to Sveta and lost.
Sveta has lost with match point at majors a few times.
Its a good sign that she came back from getting broken at 63 43 40-0 & got back to match point.
It wasnt the final. I keep telling Dementieva fans that even if she won that match point against Serena, Venus was waiting in the final.

Overall, Caro shows there is a lot to look forward to.

Wozniacki is no Serena. This is yet another slam where as soon as her opponent steps up their game, Caro is gone.

You need to stop coming up with excuses for every loss. A #1 player should find their way past these kinds of situations...

But for Caro everyone seems to lower their expectations significantly. :tape:

I thought she was going to win. The match was going in a good way for Caro, until it got to 63 55.
No excuses, she has not won amajor, and if she won this, its still not a final.

2 winners in set 1. :rolls:
0 winners in set 3. :help:

Great player, our world #1.

Yes because Caro's game is about hitting winners... do you even watch tennis?

Didn't the exact same thing happen to Serena against Kuznetsova at the French?

Caro's level dropped after she missed the matchpoint and started internally kicking herself for it. That's what ALLOWED Na Li to raise her game in the first place. So it was a case of Caro's level dropping and Na Li's ditto going up as a result, not a case of Na Li's level suddenly leapfrogging Caro's.

That's a new situation for Caro, blowing a match point in a match this big.
She is still learning. She didnt win a tier i until summer of 2010.
Li Na is in her 1st slam final at 28 and 11 months.

Caro has years ahead. The level of play was good enough to win.
Not holding at 63 43 40-0, then broken with match point at 63 54 ad, thats the problem.
She needs more bite on her serve. Or better placement. Some improvement somewhere.
Broken too often

True. I hope Caro looks at the bright side. Because if not, a loss like this can surely mess you up and have you kicking yourself for a long time.

Like Caro's assisting coach just said in an interview, this is definitely her most painful loss ever.

Na came out in that 4-5 game and hit like 2 return winners, her level clearly rose...and that's all she needed. I like Caro, but Na definitely raised her level before Caro's dropped and that was all she needed.

Kim had a lot of those earlier in her career.
Its comes with big matches, those are where you play other good players. So shit can happen.
