View Full Version : Women's semis not a sell out, even with prices static from last year

The title says it all, they haven't upped the ticket costs for the women's semis yet they have for the mens and the mens are sold out and the womens aren't.

goldenlox can tell me that caro gets x millions but it is becoming ever more clear it is sponging off the men. hence all the big tournaments becoming joint.

After this shitfest, I would be asking for a refund if I had a ticket :o

Well one of the men semis is played at night for sure, so those sessions are usually sold out much more easily then women's semies that are played during weekdays. I'm not saying it's the ONLY reason, but it's surely one to take into consideration..

I don't know the numbers for this year, but there have been a lot of empty seats, and not just during women's matches and doubles. I guess Australia has some other things to be concerned about at the moment.

I'm not worried about TA getting rich on this major. They are

Not sure if you are joking or not, but this match is shit. Na can barely have a 5+ stroke rally.

Well it's just not meaning anything lol, give me numbers where the semi of a women is played at prime time and a men semi that is playing during the day, then we'll see what affects more the ticket sells ; the gender of the players or the time that the matches are played

haha more or less lol, Li is indeed making loads of mistakes, but I think Caro is playing quite well.... still not enough to win the tourny but better than what she was playing at the begining of the tournment.

why on earth would TA put the womens semis in prime time where they cant sell the tickets at as high price as the mens and they wont get the ratings the men do?

Since when was Na ever capable of continually rallying? She's not exactly crafting points out there. It's winner or nought

But she folded for the semis :( Though I guess she is back with a chance now.

lol Have they even tried? I mean, usually the ticket price is set for the type of session, wether it's a day session or a night session. All I'm saying anyway is that it's easy to say women don't sell tickets when they are not on prime time and the mens are. As far as I know, they could put a men and a women semi as night matches, they would resolve the problem of empty seats :p, they wouldn't have much to show during the day though loll but they don't have much right now anyway lol.

Well that way everything would be fair, I just think they advantage the mens. The important thing for them is to get people in the seats for the matches anyway:p

Henin-Jie was a crap 3rd round match, only because Justine came back was it a SF.
Justine-Lena, Justine-Nadia or Justine-Dinara should have been the SF

This is a close match that just had a match point in set 2

What does your preamble have to do with the price of rice in China?

You totally missed John's point. It doesn't matter how Jie got to the semifinal. The point is Justine played like a champion, taking it to Jie from all parts of the court. She WON the match.

Here, someone (not livescoring) is just running down balls and looping them back with awful forehand technique, while the other is allergic to the net and hitting every 7th ball out.

Lord, is "playing like a champion" TF's new favorite attribute?
No certain "game" makes you a champion. But it can make you a popular one

And that match just illustrated what was wrong with Justine's game and much of the tour. She believed that she could play at that level with that kind of tennis consistently. And she couldn't, and it hurt her in the end.

I think what he meant was that Justine vs Jie's match was pretty much one sided, you knew who was going to win after the first 2 games, yes Henin was playin well but tht doesn't make the match interesting automatically. I prefer watching a tight match where you don't know the outcome already. I agree with Sammy though, doesn't matter how much money a player makes, it won't bring people to watch the match lol

Henin wasnt playing that well. Jie didnt belong there and was awful.
That match had nothing to it. Meant nothing about Justine's form.

This is the best thing the WTA could hope for.
The #1 plays well, almost wins. Li fights back, a Chinese women in the final getting lots of media attention in China.

John.
Jan 27th, 2011, 04:58 AM
Jie belonged there as much as the other 3 semi finalists.

This is irrelevant anyway - The point I was trying to make was, in a SF you expect the top players to go all out and try to win the match, not wait for their opponent to lose it. That's what seperates the champions from the pretenders

I've been saying it a while, and I'll say it again here.

1. Kudos to Francesca Schiavone! http://www.tennisforum.com/showthread.php?p=19060604#post19060604
She's getting people excited about the WTA, getting praise and getting bums in seats. She was the woman of the tournament for me.

2. I blame Kim and Justine especially for the current woes of the WTA. Especially Justine - who selfishly upped and left when she stopped winning in 2008, and exposed Kuzzy, Ivanovic and Jankovic to all sorts of new pressures they couldn't handle and adversely affectd their games - disrupted their mental and practical developments. (What's happened on the WTA could well have happened on the ATP, had Federer and Nadal just upped and left too). I have sympathy for Caroline and Vera, they're out there just doing the best they can, it's not their fault supposed leaders of the tour can't stay committed long enough.
