Bartoli

I can see why Monica Niculescu's name will probably come up in this thread a lot. She certainly has the most unique unusual and unorthox groundies on the tour and for many different = ugly and normal = beautiful.

Of course I am not going to disagree with any poster on this because ugliness like beauty is very subjective and we all have a right to our subjective opinions on this. But when talking about beauty or ugliness we must recognise....there is never a definitive answer, just a lot of personal subjective opinions. Personally I'm sure I will surprise no one when I say I love Monica's groundies but I do aknowledge my opinion is absolutely as subjective as everyone elses.

You know? I like tennis players with unique style of play. I like Monica's too, but sometimes her grounds, esecially forehand, scares me a little, but on the other hand I am also intrigued with her. It's hard to explain - i have the same thing with Rodionova. I know her behavior is difficult to accept, but sometimes her tennis is even interesting to watch, when she try to mix her game.

And, of course, all depends on their subjective feelings and opinions ;)

Everybody has an own style and if ugly means that I don´t like certain shot´s style, then such thing as ugly stroke simply doesn´t exist:confused: If ugly is again and again mixed up with "non-usual" then just look at my sig:p

I'm obviously the only one who finds Petkovic's strokes, particularly the forehand, a bit odd. Like she doesn't know if she wants to add spin or hit it flat.

Kleybanova's strokes aren't bad, but one is easily distracted by the jello-neck movement.
Venus and Maria's forehands/serves are just hitchy, not necessarily ugly.

Sharapova's forehand is really ugly to me, so is her serve, her swinging volley & any volley she does at the net, it is obvious that Maria & the net have issues.
I also hate Ana's backhand when it is so loopy but I really love it when she hits through on her backhand.

I totally agree with this.

Yeah, Kim does get great deal of rotation and forward movement into her forehand. I really admire how she does that on her forehand side, it gives her forehand so much power. But I think the way she hits it so late and how she finishes with her elbow so high just looks a bit awkward. Sometimes it can look alright when she's confident but when she isn't it can get really ugly. Also when she hits the Sharapova/Nadal same-side-finish forehand it doesn't really look that pretty a shot at all IMO. Some players can hit that way making it look pretty, but to me Kim can't.

Venus' whole game is pretty ugly to me, considering what a great champion she is. She really doesn't have one shot that looks nice or even technically sound. She makes the game look so difficult. The 2 shots of hers that look somewhat effortless to me are her backhand down the line and her first serve. Even then these shots don't really look that appealing.

And all I have to say about Alisa is: Probably one of the ugliest games I've ever watched.

For all of the flak that Bartoli gets on her serve... I personally find the way she takes her arm back and the actual swing motion itself quite nice. It is the first part of her service motion which was known for being odd looking... but the actual stroke itself is far from the worst serve in the top 20.

To some extent this is in the eye of the beholder. Sam's forehand may not be as beautiful as Fed's (whose is?) but for my money it's still breathtaking when it's on. What irritates me the most is her grunts :banghead: Not only they are annoying as hell, she screams louder than aggressive players who hit the crap out of the ball. It's so painful to watch her matches with Kvitova, who is almost silent during rallies and hits so powerfully, while Errani pushes the ball and SCREAMS AAAH-HEEEEE :smash:
Her forehand is nice though; backhand looks ugly IMO.

By the way, I always hated some male tennis players' backhands (look at Murray's backhand, he keeps his hands straight; it's not appealing to me).

Azarenka's serve motion looks weak, she should swing more and bend her wrist more (maybe).

Wozniacki's serving stance and forehand are really ugly, in fact a lot of the women have terrible service motions especially in comparrison to Serena's which is such a beautifully fluid action, a lot of the pro men could take note of her service action as well.

Petkovic...really they look like some robotic movements programmed by someone who has no clue of tennis :tape:

Vee's service motion is fucking ugly, IMO it's partly responsible for her recurring back problems & the subsequent decline in the effectiveness of her 2nd serve

That's a theory I've heard before  I knew it was technically deficient, but I didn't ever think it could do her damage. Who knows, though. It's kind of painful to imagine the player Venus could have been (especially considering how good she already is), had she worked on some of her deficiencies.

:bigcry: My service motion is similar to hers. Especially that bended wrist right before she hits the ball. She said that Sampras did it too

Me too

It's so natural for me to hit but it is fucking ugly

I wish. But I didn't copy anyone's motion really. I hit my serve the way my coach taught me and the way it feels naturally to me, and it just happens to look a bit like Venus's

Re: woz, I always think shes about to take a shit when she prepares to serve. Or at least a slash!

Su Wei can get a bit lazy looking and it's hard to watch... but again she's double handed.

Pironkova's awful, irrational, overused forehand slice.

Cornet's annoying spin that never EVER seems to power through the court no matter how hard she tries (much like Wozniacki forehand.)

Dementieva serve... even though it got better toward the end of her career. She should've played another year.

Kleybanova head jerk... homegirl gonna get whiplash.

Dislike Woz's moonballs, Venus who always looks like her feet are killing her, and while I adore Marion, I have to admit the serve is a bit... wierd. Anyone remember Jacque Tati (French mine, black and white films from the 1940s)? Marion's serve looks like the one in "En Vacances" where Tati is serving.
