Nothing special from Vera, Petra was just shite. She's like Safina 2009, reaching the later rounds without playing well at all

No way she is beating Kim. :(

I am surprised how much mental toughness Vera has improved. She is very focused, and smart with shot selections and have a good footwork.

Congratulations, Vera Zvonareva, great start in 2011.

Nothing special from Vera, Petra was just shite.

No way she is beating Kim. :(

Well, I dunno, she didn't look that bad to me... granted, Kvitty was in the self-destruction mode, but what worries me the most was how ready Vera was to turn on her own self-destruction mode as soon as the crowd and the cannons started bothering her. She was lucky Petra wasn't good enough to use it, but Kim or (God-forbid) Wozniacki would have gotten her then. But her game was fine.

Also what the hell was the umpire thinking making Vera play while there was an audience member being treated by paramedics right in her line of sight? :o

Very happy with this result, good for the WTA IMO:) Enough upsets, time for the top players to pick up their game.

Potentially Kim in the semis will probably be easier for Vera to deal with than in the final. Hopefully she plays well, I want to see some drama.

Was at match live. Vera hit with incredible depth and agression not allowing kvitova to hit winners. Petra also could not get her first serve I'n and seemed too uptight and nervous

I know... But she really has to keep her cool in such stupid situations or her less sensitive/more focused opponents will always use it against her.

Jan 26th, 2011, 12:39 AM
Not a good match  Kvitova was flat at the start and only briefly came alive after the distractions (crowd member medical attention, baby crying and cannons going off). She lost her momentum when serving at 4-3, and Zvonareva finished her off in straights. One would think Kvitova would tone her shots down and not go for so much if she's having an off-day like this, but I guess not

Solid win for Vera against a potentially tricky and in form opponent. I hope Radwanska can miraculously take out Kim so Zvonareva can cake walk to the final

Also what the hell was the umpire thinking making Vera play while there was an audience member being treated by paramedics right in her line of sight? :oMariana Alves being mean and nasty as usual.

Here she does nothing instead of interrupting the match as the rules apply...

... but on the other hand the other day she was grandstanding and intimidating Makarova, ordering her to change her outfit :o

Never in doubt really Zvonareva will make an erratic player like Petra hit shot after shot until she can no longer keep it in the court

Never in doubt. This result just shows how clueless TFers are about Mugvitova and her game. LMAO at those who said she was going to win the tournament. Finally this super overrated ballbasher is out of the tournament.

I'm very happy to see Vera win and assuming Clijsters gets through I think it should be a close three set match. If Vera can get past Kim she will be playing someone who has never won a slam so that should help her. I'm rooting for Wozniacki but if she loses to Li I would love to see Vera win it.

Zvonareva was solid, Kvitova was nowhere apart from 10 minutes after the audience medical break. This match was her career (so far) in a nutshell - patches of brilliance surrounded by longer ones of errors.
Can't see Vera trouble Saint Kim in the semis (edit: okay, it will go to 3 but I still think Kim will prevail).

It is pleasing to see her moving well again now she is completely healthy, it is a wonder she didn't head up to the injured with a bag of ice:) I expected a close match at best. Will be interesting to see how Petra develops over the next couple of years.

How is her clay game?
I think she'll do well.
At least she is the runner up of green clay court. Lost badly to Giant&BrilliantSam.
And I remember she beat Vee at 2003 FO.
And with the confidence she had now, she will BE a contender, a serious one, at FO.
And I'm not even a fan

Disappointed. I'd say Vera's Czech left practice wins over Lucie and Iveta helped her against Petra, but in fact Lucie gave Vera the biggest test. Petra started out nervous and off and never really took control.

Vera has gotten better as the tournament progresses. I'm not counting her out as a potential winner, her game seems more powerful and less workmanlike than it was at the USO.

Jan 26th, 2011, 11:33 AM
Petra was completely awful for the most part, and in the few games that she played well in she hit Vera clean off court. Disappointing performance as it confirms that Petra will likely never be able to keep up the high level required to be top player. Her serve wasn't firing at all and she always seemed a step or two too slow to the ball.

Vera was just solid throughout, nothing spectacular. Meh.

So anti-climatic, but i suppose that was to be expected considering Kvitova's obvious fluctuations in her game. The match just cantered on, with Kvitova only finding her range sporadically for about two games per set. So many flaws in her game still, it just shows the void in which women's tennis is pushing these women into uncharted territory and they seemingly don't have the goods to adapt. Kvitova's serve lacked any kind of placement, hitting predominantly to Zvonareva's bh, and just engaging herself in these hopeless CC rallies. Like Viktymise noted, she seemed so slow and ungainly moving to every ball. Like some kind of Giraffe.

Her shot-making is undeniably flashy and thunderous when it all gels, but she lacks any kind of middle game against players of Zvonareva's ilk. Vera settled into the match from the off, and was perfectly content to absorb and move the Kvitova ball back with interest, and Petra just looked clueless.

Vera is being admirably efficient in this tournament, but it's pretty obvious to me that she isn't playing her best tennis, nor really feels likes she has to. This is indicative of the WTa these days, where 'winning ugly' is a fast-emerging mantra. 'Winning ugly' or doing 'just enough'.
