Tennis meets reality TV online in "Hot Shots" show

Women's professional tennis will create its own interactive reality television series to be streamed online and onto mobile phones in an effort to win new fans for the sport among the tech-savvy.
The "Xperia Hot Shots" series will feature six young Women's Tennis Association (WTA) players when it goes live in March, following the on and off court trials and tribulations of the players over more than 50 tournaments on the WTA tour.
The players will film themselves using mobile phones, share their experiences online by streaming them on YouTube and interact with fans through Facebook and other social media.
The public will also be able to vote on their favourite players, whose names will be chosen and announced in March.
"It's really going to help us to attract a whole new group of fans to the sport," Andrew Walkers, Vice President of Global Marketing and Communications at the WTA, said in a telephone interview from Melbourne.
"Younger fans, consumers who are living on line, consumers who are following our athletes not just because they're the world's greatest female athletes, but because they're interested in their off-court lives."
Maria Sharapova, the former world number one who took part in the launch, said by phone that by being online, the series could become a valuable networking tool for the sport.
"I think it also gives fans a perspective to see what we athletes have to go through, not just on the court but away from the court," she said.

I believe Maria Sharapova is one of the 6.....a week ago on her facebook she posted something about a new program that will be highlighting 6 wta girls and how it sounded very exciting. She was at the "launch" of it(it also has something to do with a camera endorsement in australia). Oh oops i guess i should have read the entire paragraph lol.

Maria and Serena would seem to be obvious choices. Caro too, since many people here want to uncover the terrible conspiracy that allows her to be #1.

I think one spot should be reserved for someone outside of the top 100, to show how different things are if you aren't a star.

As for the last 2 spots, it would be interesting if they contrasted a declining veteran with a rising star.

maybe WTA should start focusing on TENNIS instead of pushing their players into modeling, starring in tv-shows, ...
and then their are complaints that level of play is bad, how strange!

this is exactly what f.e. kim doesn't like about the tour. and i guess many top players with her

The prize is a Sony Ericsson endorsement deal so obviously Maria isn't taking part. I also can't see any high profile players doing this (Serena having to fight for a SE sponsorship, that just isn't her). Kim, Venus , Justine & Ana I are for me definites not to take part as well.

I really see this being more geared towards the younger players.

And they may have eyed one player up for this SE endorsement. We will see when it is launched if there is a 'chosen one'. See what material actually goes out for each player, one player may get all the good stuff for a reason because they want her to get the endorsement.

Serena, Venus, Maria, and Kim are obvious choices.

It would also be fun to see some lower ranked players in it. Safarova, Petkovic, Cibukova... who people still know but aren't superstars.

Would love to see Vika, Caro, Ana, and maybe Sabine :inlove:

Would be interesting to have Peer on the show. Always wanted to know a bit about her opinion on current events.

Also, Venus/Serena (I remember that they did fun things in their show  ) , Kim and such.

Wouldn't enjoy a program about Sharapova, Azarenka and Wozniacki, I couldn't care less about their day-to-day shopping sprees. Plus Wozniacki is a bore. She buys pants for her dad and faked a kangaroo attack story.

Sounds like a good idea. Hope it's a success.

Elite players aside, I think player like Rezai (with all the controversies and struggles surrounding her would be interesting), Li Na (rise of tennis in asia and all the politics) or a lowly ranked player so we get insights into the struggles of players who aren't raking in the cash.

Hope Wozniacki and Kim aren't involved... couldn't imagine more dull viewing.

I think people are getting their hopes up a little too high. My guess is out of the 6 I would be surprised if there is more than 1 top 20 player. Probably most of the players will be ranked outside the top 50. Of course I am just speculating like everyone else but I would be very very surprised if this show was packed with players from the top 20.

I wouldn't be surprised if it was just the girls who are wearing Maria's clothing line. The articles about this talk about young, upcoming players who want to break through, and with the heavy Sharapova involvement...

This.

Honestly, this new reality show sounds interesting in the way they're broadcasting it but it's a turgid, out-dated concept (which was covered in Girls On Tour years ago) and it won't take off.

I absolutely LOVE Domi, so I'm pretty excited about this :) And if Cirstea is there too, then that's even more reason to be excited :) And I like Bethanie as well, although at 25 I think she's a little old be featured on a show about young players. She should be good for some comedy relief though, in any case :) Lisicki and Keothavong I really have no interest in. It will be interesting to see who the 6th girl is. Apparently they're making the official cast announcement today (Sunday) so we won't have to wait very long to find out.

Sharapova tries to fuse tennis, entertainment with Hot Shots (http://www.usatoday.com/sports/tennis/2011-03-20-xperia-hot-shots_N.htm)

...will give the public an up-close-and-personal look at their lives — both on and off the court — while competing against each other and interacting with celebrities from the worlds of film, television, music, fashion and gaming in various challenges.

Using their Sony Ericsson Xperia handsets, each of the six players will be filming their own lives, giving viewers a backstage pass to their lives on the tennis court and away from it, while showcasing their personalities and interests. Segments will be broadcast weekly on YouTube (http://www.youtube.com/xperiahotshots), and the players will supplement their videos with interaction on their Facebook and Twitter pages.

Stephan Croix, head of Global Marketing Partnerships for Sony Ericsson Mobile Communications, conceived a campaign that would capitalize on the global reach and popularity of women's' tennis by utilizing the technology of the telecommunications company to help create new stars.

"I feel like we are breaking new ground here," Croix says. "We want to showcase these young, talented players in a way that's never been done before. We want to make them famous."

Wow. Schiavone? Seriously? I'm definitely glad that you're not involved in marketing the WTA. I think it would have ceased to exist by now :)

Anyway, I don't get all these comments about these girls being picked for their looks. I don't think that's the case at all. As I said before, the only really hot ones are Domi and Sorana. The others are all average looking at best, and a few of them I think are definitely below average looking (I won't say which ones so as to avoid offending any particular fan base!) Here's why I think each individual girl was chosen:

Domi - Young, beautiful and super-outgoing.
Sorana - Young and beautiful and kind of an enigma.
Lisicki - She threatened to suck their blood.
Cornet - Felt sorry for her because of her nose.
Bethanie - For comedy relief, and they probably wanted an American and Oudin must have said no.
Heather - They were probably looking for a non-white girl and a UK girl and she allowed them to meet their quota for both.

So yeah, other than with Domi and Sorana, I don't think looks had anything to do with it

pesto
Mar 21st, 2011, 05:16 PM
I also don't think they were all picked for their looks.

I'm a little surprised they don't have an Asian player, as the WTA have really been pushing to grow tennis in Asia. Europe is rather over-represented. If they wanted a UK girl and may have wanted all contestants to be 18+, then Heather really was the only option who is going anywhere. She also ticks a box as a teen player making a decent transition from juniors to seniors. There aren't too many of those around, unfortunately.

Better having only 1000 "friends" like Mattek-Sands and playing Top 40 than having many fans who get disappointed week by week and being ranked outside Top 100...

i think its a good idea, it's something different which i admire the wta for at least attempting to do :) but wont it be embarrassing if most of these girls lose their first round ?? :tape:

Have anyone tried the Xperia Hot Shot app for Android? Something is wrong with it, it's links to a wrong Twitter account for Cirstea, where the last tweet was made 15/05/2010. While her real Twitter account was updated just minutes ago: https://twitter.com/#!/sorana_cirstea

this looks to be a massive flop. Last activity was: bethanie's nascar driving (zzzz), cibulkova's promotion of the show, and her interviews at the miami party.

Talk about losing a pulse quickly.

IKR? I would've thought Sony Ericsson would have had people working on this full-time as well. Apparently not.

So 5 out of 6 are 21 year old girls (Watson is little bit younger actually) from EU countries. What a great scan of WTA global picture :tape:

Today in Stuttgart Cibulkova playing vs Lisicki so they should to force them to be whole day together (before and after match) if they really want to make them famous with this show and have some interesting action out of there. That's how real reality shows works - otherwise it will be too obviously fake (&polite) or even utter-boring.

Apparently the aim is for each of the players to try and get as many Facebook fans as they can - so far Cirstea is pwning them all with 27,000+ fans. Mattek-Sands is last with 1,025 :spit:

Cirstea had 26 000 before this;)

Well my fellow GM bitches...:wavey::kiss:

Appears Sabine is running away with the Hot Shots thingy, with about 55,000 on her Facebook vs. Sori on 41,000 for her page.

No doubt her performances in the UK have helped Sabine win over an army of new fans.

Not bad for a lovely "vampire"...:lol:

I hope the Empress appears. I still love that video where she is followed by the camera in a cafeteria and she mingles with the likes of Svetlana and Justine :worship:
