View Full Version : Venus Williams the most marketable sportswoman

Jan 25th, 2011, 10:46 AM
Figuring out any celeb's marketability is an inexact science.

But Nielsen's annual State of the Media report for 2010, released Monday, offers what it dubs "the most comprehensive" projection of various athletes endorsement potential through so-called N-Scores that measure name recognition, favoribility and "46 specific personal attributes."

And the winners are: Fox's Terry Bradshaw is the highest-scoring TV announcer. Shaun White ranks highest among active male athletes while Venus Williams is the top female athlete. Among NBA players, Shaquille O'Neal ranks first while Dale Earnhardt Jr. tops NASCAR drivers. Predictably, Tiger Woods' N-Score has plummeted, but it's not as if another PGA Tour star stepped up to fill that vacuum -- Arnold Palmer, at 81, had 2010's highest N-Score for any golfer, active or retired.

Venus must be doing something right, she has not really been sponsored by major companies since reebok almost 5 years ago yet she continues to be in the top 3 of female sports earners. serena and maria I get, but venus not. She must be able to move merchandise almost in a very unsung way.

It's probably also based on the influence she has as a whole and how much of a great public speaker is (personal attributes), not just how glamourous she is in Maria's case.

As the post above me says, it's actually quite admirable how much she is able to make even though she is without the massive source of income that the other two have.

I'm searching for the "46 specific personal attributes". I suspect that may reveal the answers.

That is why I don't waste much of my time on "perceptions" of the so called "real" tennis fans :bs: For the most part they have tried their hardest to undermine the favorability and achievements of the Sisters, Venus especially. In the real world for the past decade to present the real numbers that I have seen have proven that people prefer substance over HYPE.:yeah:

That is one of the reasons I don't even bother to comment on how the so called "classy" tennis fans treat them any more because it says more about those people than the Sisters. Case in point, Venus may have been booed at the AO but she left the court with class and her integrity in tact therefore it was shame on the crowds not Venus.

Good on Venus for making things happen for herself without the aid of hype and cheerleading of the media and tennis establishment!:worship: Go Venus, get well and return with a vengeance!:hearts:

This may be one of those chicken-egg things, but actually Venus' work for Oreos is actually probably higher profile than any single account that Rena or TOB have. Being in spots with the Mannings that run during NFL games is going to get you a lot more exposure than a shoe ad in Vogue.

Of course, it's quite likely the good folks at Nabisco knew a good thing when they saw it, too.

She's a character all right, remember when she was into hair breads and they went skittering across the court in the Quarter Finals at the Australian Open? To me that's still the top moment of her career, topping her other wardrobe malfunctions like see-though underweer, top-tuggers, or nude underwear.

I have been saying that Venus has turned into a business mogul and more power and recognition comes with that. It is one thing to just get endorsements which any tennis player can but it is another thing all together to build a business empire which is exactly what Venus is doing. I am not surprised at all by this. Venus walks the talk and is very influential. I have long felt like she will be the next Billie Jean King when it comes to what she has done for the women's tour.

There is no hype factor when it comes to Venus or Serena for that matter. The media did not create their images or their financial success, their talent did and their desire to do more and make a difference. Venus has done some rather remarkable deeds. Fighting for equal prize money and getting it and then going on to win the very tournament that they first offered equal prize money at Wimbledon. Standing firm that if Shahar Peer did not play in Dubai 2010 that she would not defend her title. That is huge. Putting someone else before your own ambition is very impressive.

Then on top of everything else Venus Williams gets her college degree while still on tour & is even going back to school for another degree. Parents around the world love a role model who supports education. Venus was even given an award for speaking out against what happened to Shahar Peer http://www.ynetnews.com/articles/0,7340,L-3768649,00.html.

Venus Williams transcends tennis whether people want to admit it or not. The facts speak for themselves. That is why she now has endorsement deals with household brand names now like Tide & Nabisco (Oreo cookies).

Why don't you get Venus being in the top 3 among female sports earners. She's had many endorsement's since 05
Venus endorsements Since 05:

American Express
McDonald's (I believe she ended that partnership in 06)
Powerade (Coca Cola)
Steve and Barry's
Gilt.com
Tide (Procter & Gamble)
Ralph Lauren
Oreo (Nabisco)
EA Sports (For EA Sports Active and EA Grand Slam tennis)
Wilson
BET. com (is on her sponsor list, but I don't know what type of deal they have)
Big Fishgames.com (Case of the Grand Slam Queen game)
Eleven partnered with the USTA, Venus designed a shirt in 09

Also Venus was still being paid by Reebok until 2007

Venus had a reality TV show in 05

Venus had 3 book deals since 05
"Serving From the Hip" (with Serena)
"Koto Bolofo Venus" and "Come to Win"

Venus is part owner of the Miami Dolphins.
Venus' interior company partnered with a few real estate developers in Florida and the Caribbean.
Plus she makes good money in appearance fees.

There are not many female Athletes on Venus level.

It's probably also based on the influence she has as a whole and how much of a great public speaker is (personal attributes)....That would be my guess as well. She's also basically the de facto spokeswoman for the players right now. And, the ultra short dresses aside, she's got a real 'wholesome' image. When Venus retires, she'll slide over to full-time businesswoman, do the talk circuit some, and her post-athletics income will likely be quite a bit higher than most other players.

Also, let's be honest. Sharapova isn't going late into slams, which limits her exposure, and Serena was hurt by that explosion a couple years ago at the US Open. I don't think Venus has suddenly gotten more popular. It's just that the contenders ahead of her have fallen off some.

There is something I am not understanding about the phrase "most marketable sportswoman".

This is from september of 2009---has a lot changed?

The name of the game for tennis players is leveraging strong on-court play, a winning personality and, preferably, good looks into lucrative endorsement deals. Our top earners separate themselves from the pack in their ability to secure sponsorship beyond the endemic deals that cover shoes, apparel and rackets. Only a select few can line up deals in other categories like cars, beverages, electronics and financial services.

No one has done this better than Maria Sharapova who earned $USD 22.5 million ($26.2 million) over the past year despite, being sidelined for much of it due to a shoulder injury. She earned an estimated $USD 22 million ($25.6 million) from sponsors-nearly on par with Federer, whose income was further boosted by prize money and appearance fees.

There is something I am not understanding about the phrase "most marketable sportswoman".

This is from september of 2009---has a lot changed? That is strictly based off of endorsements, prize money exhibitions & appearance fees for the year based on Forbes.
http://www.forbes.com/2010/08/18/top-earning-female-athletes-business-sportsmoney-female-athletes.html

This is the format they use:
Our income figures cover June 2009 through June 2010 and include prize money, endorsements, appearance fees and exhibitions.

Being the highest earner and being the most marketable are 2 different things. Venus makes a ton of money without even having a clothing contract so you can imagine she would have that much more with a clothing sponsor. Also What Venus makes off the court in her business endeavors are not part of what they consider for highest earner because if that was included she would have much higher figures on the Forbes list.

Endorsements are simply people who pay you to be an image for their company, it doesn't mean that you are the most marketable. Venus Williams overall resume does make her very marketable.

See who will be the next highest paid athlete thread.

Thank you very much for the clarification. I am a Maria Sharapova fan, but I have immense admiration for both Venus and Serena, as well as for many other players.

I found it puzzling, and I apologize if my post seemed to reflect anything else. I am particularly glad that prize money, which comes from playing great tennis, is important in "most marketable".

Perhaps it is because america is ridiclous in the way it rewards athletes, look at how much tiger and the basetballers/nfl players make. No wonder america's economy is going belly up! Europe is either alot more measured or they don't trumpet their player's earnings.

N-Score is a new measurement system from Nielsen that rates the brand impact of professional athletes and sports
personalities, enabling advertisers to make smart marketing decisions on commercial endorsements. Based on Nielsen’s
strategic collaboration with E-Poll Market Research, N-Score provides the most comprehensive, in-depth look at a sports

That's only in America. In fact, it's probably even limited to the state of California, Florida and some parts of New York. Venus won't sell anything in Europe or Asia for that matter. :shrug:I'm sorry but this statement has no supporting facts. There is no way to know that unless you have actually done this type of research in those markets.

I don't live in California, New York, or Florida but I see plenty of Venus commercials on the regular. I always see her Oreo commercials, tide commercials, and Wilson commercials.

I always see her Oreo commercials, tide commercials, and Wilson commercials. The person who made that statement should know that these commercials are from sponsors who are also in several countries outside of the US. Also what would make a person think that those commercials would be limited to 3 states in America:confused: Those sponsors are household brands especially tide & oreo so you can believe that they are in all 50 of the states. The oreo commercial alone has more than one sport involved so you can believe that it is reaching more people.

he is still a Venus hater. winone23 is not wrong about that.

LBV used to be a Venus fan. I remember him posting in my video thread back in the day. But something changed around Wimbledon 2008 or Dubai 2009. Ever since he hates and constantly makes fun of Venus' mental fragility but she only makes it easier and easier for em so who can be mad??

You're such a loser, for someone who hates Venus you're always popping up in her threads. :help:exactly, without fail.

all you have to do is start a thread that says anything about Venus in superlative terms and a few predictable ones show up to try to minimize it. The insecurity of SOME Serena fans knows no limit! Making comparisons even when none are necessary.

That's because it's only USA. Outside USA no one gives a shit about loosers like Danica Patrick.
Of course, we are talking about USA market.
We accept she is not that popular or accepted in cities like Belgrade, Warsaw, Vienna, Moscow, Brussells, Moscow, Tokyo. These are cities where people prefer blondes.

Considering what she's given to the sport and her historical place in it and therefore sports in general, That is an honor well deserved for Venus. It makes complete sense. And it puts to bed a lot of other foolish notions around here.

This thread seems kind of desperate given Venus' results of the last couple of years. She should have retired when she was on top. Now she's become everyone's practice puppet and a joke to everyone who's into fashion.

Fashion spreads are also dominated by blondes.

What make this thread desperate? Venus fans didn't write the article. Are you mad because Kim is not marketable in the US despite winning the USO three times? Venus has done so much in the game that she is a legend who is marketable no matter how good or bad she's playing. Venus is a joke to everyone who's into fashion, you may not get the joke, but Ralph Lauren does.
