View Full Version : Petra Kvitova: the first left-handed ball-basher in WTA history?

I expect Kvitova to bash her way to victory against Vera, who doesn't play enough offense.

I can not remember any other lefty who played a ball-bashing style like Kvitova. Of course, practically the only lefty on the tour in the last 10 years was Schnyder, so maybe this is distorting my memory. Kvitova has the opposite of the typical lefty game personified by Schnyder.

btw, Seles doesn't count as a lefty.

Why? She was left handed. 2 hands on both sides doesn't change what hand she writes with.

I expect Vera to win because when you hit the ball back into play, the ballbashers self destruct.

And no, there have been plenty of ballbashers that are left handed in the WTA. She's probably the most successfull LBB that the WTA has had in recent times.

How is what hand she writes with relevant to whether she is a left-handed tennis player? Seles didn't have a lefthanded forehand and can't be considered a conventional lefty in tennis terms.

Depends on how patient Petra is vs Vera.

Petra is a clean ballstriker, but Vera is a good defender.
If Petra is patient and reduces the UE....then she'd win.
Or else I'd see Vera walking all over Petra.

If you won't count Seles for whatever reason Safarova fits the bill perfectly (as do a host of others as posters have mentioned).

She did, it was just a double handed leftie forehand. She served left handed too.

True, just now I remembered that Bartoli writes with her left hand, I think Nadal is the opposite as-well. But she did have a left-handed forehand, she had her left hand on the bottom of the racket. She isn't like say, Ayumi Mortia who swaps her hands mid swing so that she has two backhands.

ok, so re-phrase is to "is Kvitova the first left-handed ball-basher who is actually a threat to go deep in the Slams."

Safarova isn't 100 percent ball-basher. Benesova may be, but she isn't good enough to warrant metioning.

People may call Petra a ballbasher but her constant will to go to the net will change this very soon :). I can't help myself but admire this, especially with some of the errors she makes there and she still tries and tries.

Because she's right handed

Sharapova is actually a left-handed but she plays right-handed. She is the opposite of Nadal, who is actually a right-handed but plays left-handed.

What has writing to do with tennis? Nadal writes with his right so I guess he's a righty.

seles= of course she was left handed - and she was not brainless nor a ballbasher. she played the angles and opened up the court like no one else. watch her early matches - changes of pace, slices, moonballs, drop shots - monica should never be mentioned in the same sentence as "Brainless ballbasher"

Though Lucie made the quarters here once, Petra is performing the way Lucie should have by now. Her game is more solid and she doesn't aim for the lines as much. And Petra's serve is huge. She has potential to be the best server since Serena.

I think Lucie might have her best year in 2011 though.

Of course she does. To say that Monica does not have a lefty forehand is to say that Davenport, Chris Evert, Jankovic, Serena, Venus, Clijsters, etc.... [I could go on, but you get the point] do not have a righty backhand. It's a patently false statement.

You can write with one hand and play tennis with another ;)

My grandmother was lefthanded in softball and tennis and righthanded in writing and netball.
