Strong comeback from Caro. She hunkered down in the 2nd set and started hitting with more conviction. That little shift in pace got a free-flowing Franci out of her zone, strategy- or timing-wise. The errors in that 2nd set were uncalled for.

Sad to see fatigue be more of a factor in the 3rd. But bravura effort from Fran :worship:.

Caro's anticipation is incredible. That gets her as many games, sets and matches as do her mental strength and neutralizing skills.

I'm really surprised Caro made it to the semifinals. People doubted that she would make it past the first round. Really, I just hope Caro doesn't roll over to Na in the SF. At least show some resistance and make it a fun match to watch.

And honestly, I'd rather see Caro in the SF than Fran because I'm sure Fran is depleted of all energy right now.

Nothing against Wozniacki, and credit to her she did play well, and yes it was a very entertaining high standard match, but at the end of the day, I think probably roughly 90% of the people that watched that match, myself included, will be bitterly disappointed in the final outcome. Oh well.

*DEATH* at people who praise Wozniacki for doing anything more than sticking around until her opponent, who had played for LITERALLY DOUBLE the amount of time Wozniacki had prior to this match, finally suffered a mental lapse in concentration... which took a set and a half as she was fundamentally tearing her apart.

Anyone looking ahead to her next match just KNOWS a decent Li tears the girl apart. Wozniacki wins only when her opponent hits several dozen errors, what's new? :sobbing:

Its amazing because of Fran's age.
I saw Dementieva in New Haven play a very long 3 setter with Bartoli a few months ago, then a long 3 setter with Caro the next day.
So it can be done if the player is in great shape

Because Fran played great tennis going after Wozniacki loopy moonball at the net, with wonderful net play, her focus is much more superior while her opponent couldn't even run down the balls and smiling after every points. Why Wozniacki won this match is because her luck, Francessca can take only 2 sets to beat her with normal status.

i haven't really watched wozniacki to this point, but yeah, i really don't like her game. and i love counter punchers, but just not wozniacki. i was rooting for schiavone. against svetlana, she was the one forcing errors, looking like a wall with the help of her great slice backhand and others. well, wozniacki totally forced a trillion errors out of schiavone. if she hadn't just played the second longest match in women's tennis history, i have a feeling that wozniacki being the slightly-too-tall-to-be-a-counter-puncher-and-average-foot-speed wall would not have worked as well and fran would've won the match.

Great points toward the end! Another enjoyable match, Schiavone had patches of sheer brilliance, while Wozniacki was consistent as usual with some stunning defense thrown in there. Of course people are going to bitch and moan about the fact that Wozniacki won instead of enjoying the fact that it was a great match. And for all the crap Wozniacki gets about having no weapons, being a pusher, always getting lucky, etc. you have to acknowledge the fact that she's a fighter and she never gives up. To beat her you really need to play not only well in patches, but also be able to sustain a relatively high level throughout the entire match, which most players can't do. So people can make claims about Wozniacki having no talent all they want, but most players could only dream of having as much fight and consistency as she does. I admire her game for that. :yeah:

As for Schiavone, what a great tournament and it was kind of sad to see it come to and end for her here. I hadn't watched her play all that much before this Aussie Open and she really surprised me with her intensity and great variety. Her volleys are amazing. I can't imagine someone not enjoying her game, and she certainly won me over this week as a fan. :yeah:

Damn, that game with 4 straight UFEs was Fran's undoing, but still an amazing fight out there from her. Some brilliant shotmaking, and what an amazing athlete she is. Caro upped her level a bit after Fran gave her the opening, but aside from some excellent anticipation, I was unimpressed. If Na keeps it together, it should be a repeat of last year.

Seriously, hats off to Fran on her amazing resurgence this past year. Unbelievable.

MaBaker
Jan 25th, 2011, 05:49 AM
Should've been 2:0 for Francesca, but she just collapsed in the second set, without help of Wozniacki. Btw, those foot faults were Shino-like. Hopefully, Na will take care of this thing.

BepaMaria

Its really disappointing that Pushniacki always manages to luck out wins against better opponents. She was being controlled by Schiavone in a lot of the rallies for the first set and a half and was on the verge of losing but suddenly Schiavone started making silly mistakes to let her back in. A fresher Schiavone would have won in straights today. Tennis has lost yet again:o. It really beats me as to why so many people love her boring personality, boring game and ugly groundstrokes.

Hopefully Li Na will fix her in the semis because Pushniacki would ruin the final badly if she was playing.

You could say that for anyone though. How can people support players who hit 30+ UEs a match regularly? Is that a sign of skill? People like different things, not that hard to understand.

Fran played well first set but Caro also couldnt keep the ball in play, once she upped her game it was ne ver gonna be a 1 sided affair. People forget that Caro was 2-0 against Fran on HC before this match.

Big well done to Fran though, she truly is a champion, but i'm ecstatic that Caro is through to the semis :-)

I just can't imagine people said they like to watch her game. Nice person but her game bores people to death.
the only reason kept me watching is solely Franny, what a great champion and athlete. The way she saved all those mps is just delicious and pure talent. That's the way Woz can never do.

The game which Franny lost in 3-2 2nd set with 4 ue in a row let caro back in the game and that hurts Franny confidence so much. When it dragged on to the 3rd set Franny was just too tired to play.

Her supporters are people like me who predicted she would be #1 when she was not even top 40 and haters are people like you who predicted she would never break into the top 10. Now you're bitter that you picked the wrong side from the onset. Here you had a Dane to go all the way, but your "big Tennis brain" told you she wasn't worth betting on. Oh how wrong you were.

Yep, those 4 straight errors did her in. She gave Caro hope, which cost her at the end.

:yeah:

Such lowclass comments here.

That was a good match. Nice stats from both. Sorry Fran lost.. but great fight from Caro. A lot of other players would have fallen to an inspired Fran

Two comments worthy of a tennis fan.

Francesca fought and showed brilliant heart and fight, but she just wasn't fresh enough to be disciplined in her shot selection against a backboard. A

And as for Wozniacki, we're only three weeks in and she's already back to tha dirty tactics and already pulling the same old shit again. It's lying, fabricating and cheating.

Kill her, Li.

PS, all this "Wozniacki is a fighter" rubbish is so overplayed. The nature of her game is to wait for opponents' form to dip and beat themselves. It is what it is, and it clearly works as we saw Schiavone hit 4 easy errors at 3-1, but lets not bullshit and act like she's some epic mentally strong fighter. Cuz she ain't.

Like I said, this match should've been 6-2 6-3. Caro was serving the shit out of Fran in the 1st set and should've capitalized on all those breakpoints.

But it doesn't matter. A win is a win is a win is a win...

Well I guess if you stopped being so idiotic and see that Francessca is much more passionate player than Wozniacki.

Do you believe that Wozniacki can pull off the 4 hours 20 minutes match, with producing wonderful points?

Her supporters are people like me who predicted she would be #1 when she was not even top 40 and haters are people like you who predicted she would never break into the top 10. Now you're bitter that you picked the wrong side from the onset. Here you had a Dane to go all the way, but your "big Tennis brain" told you she wasn't worth betting on. Oh how wrong you were. Of course too proud to openly admit it.

It's seriously funny how clueless you are.

Amazing grit from both players.

Francesca is from Milan, but it's Wozniacki who's the (last year's version of) Inter Milan of the WTA. And Piotr is her Mourinho. All the neutrals want the flashy Barçelona to triumph. Everyone wants the ballbashers to beat Wozniacki. But her genius rigid game is just too strong. Other players hit winners, Woz takes them away. With her defense and her "pushes," she takes the angles away.

To stick to a gameplan like this takes consistency, concentration, firm discipline, anticipation.. Very few players on the tour have the mental talent to play this game at a winning level. It's so delightful to watch shrink the court and completely imprison her opponents, a complete shame the beauty is lost on so many who just want to see creative and flashy shots.

Before every match, "x is going to blow Caroline off the court." And after, "ugh Caroline was so lucky." Caroline plays her points to shut the court down and force the other player to pull out some amazing shots, that's how she gets consistently "lucky."

The mental fortitude and consistency Woz demands of herself is inspirational and outstanding. Kudos to Francesca because she matched her mentally today and made the match close. The resiliency of both players was outstanding - Wozniacki was able to get positive down a set and a break, and Schiavone refused to go down without a fight.

You can't "see" Caroline's inner strength, patience, and fight as easily as you can see other aspects of the game, but we would all be happier to admire it! :worship:

I've supported Wozniacki in the past, but it is hard to support a player that plays such incredibly shitty, passive tennis like she did in that first set. Picked it up in sets two and three but that was also largely due to her wilting opponent.

Caroline plays her points to shut the court down and force the other player to pull out some amazing shots, that's how she gets consistently "lucky." Martina Hingis did the same thing, but with infinitely more flair. By 2000, that was no longer good enough. Unfortunately, it seems like an inferior version is good enough for 2010, which shows that the game is regressing. Or maybe not.

Even back in 2000, Martina could beat one, even two aggressive players at the Slams. However, there was always a third in-form player waiting in the wings.

Second she is a known LIAR and uses pushing tactics at every turn to try to get a leg up on her opponent. Yeah, her thigh was hurt, and I'm Harriet Tubman. This is not commendable behavior. Remember when she collapsed on the court against Ivanovic last year like she was going to die? Yet she was running like an Olympic sprinter the next game? She is pathetic.

So that's why she gets so much hate. You don't have to agree, but you should at least be able to see why. Hope I've helped you out with your problem. :wavey:

Second she is a known LIAR and uses pushing tactics at every turn to try to get a leg up on her opponent. Yeah, her thigh was hurt, and I'm Harriet Tubman. This is not commendable behavior. Remember when she collapsed on the court against Ivanovic last year like she was going to die? Yet she was running like an Olympic sprinter the next game? She is pathetic.

So that's why she gets so much hate. You don't have to agree, but you should at least be able to see why. Hope I've helped you out with your problem. :wavey:

And just after her medical time-out she couldn't wait to get rid of the straps !!!

i was just thinking how gangly looking she is while on the run. but, let's face it, she is incredibly fast. she chased down a ton of balls. her movement reminds me of jennifer capriati, in how she looked so wobbly and funky looking while on the run, but capriati was one of the all time great movers. wozniacki may look awkward, but her defense is up there with the best.

 But Capriati didn't look THIS gangly though..

Another foregone conclusion.

Wozniacki should have won this match tired Schiavone or not. She won the last two hardcourt meetings both on slow to medium surfaces similar to this one.

Schiavone did well in the first set. Targetting the Wozniacki FH return-of-serve when under any trouble and coming forward as needed, but her opponent was really lacklustre in the first set.

I think Wozniacki came out thinking under the circumstances she would get up on the scoreboard early without having to do too much and just roll from there. She had this look about her that she should have been winning.

:worship:

This is very well written and sums up Caro's game precisely. Well done!

No, you can see it from the other point of view. Caro is better. Or was better today. And all those three matches, when you watch them, Caro is better. Schiavone has trouble beating her. RG was an exception.

Many posters in here know so little about tennis they can only admire the hard hit winner. Things such as smart angles, change of speed/depth/spin, breaking your opponent's rhytm etc. are beyond them.
Caro's play in this tournament certainly could be better - she always takes some time to get her match rhytm going - but all those opponent errors don't occure in a vacuum; they are Carrors (Caro induced errors)! I just made up that word. ;)

Caro never limped or indicated she had a serious injury. She had a slight thigh strain and got her thigh taped for support, but the tape didn't sit right. After having fiddled with it a few times she decided it was more a bother than a help and removed it, finishing the match as best she could. Simple.

Edit: She also says she got some painkillers during the MTO. After 15-20 minutes she didn't feel the pain anymore and got rid of the tape.

Fran hit 27 more winners than Wozniacki.

A lot of people seem really hung up on the fact that Caroline does not hit many winners. Here's what Caroline says and I agree:

Q. You're used to this kind of stats, but Francesca had 41 winners and you only 14. Then she had 46 unforced errors and you only 15. So you're No. 1 in the world, but the other players seem to take more initiative than you do. That doesn't sound a bit strange to you? It's normal?

CAROLINE WOZNIACKI: I just want to know who won the match. (Smiling.) I think I did that, so, you know, I think there is no question. I'm playing to win. If the opponent makes a hundred winners, it's too good. But if I still win the match, that's the most important thing in the end.

Most of the time when people complain about Caroline's low winner totals she won the match. Would it be nice if she hit more winners? Sure, but I think she would rather win with only five winners than lose with 40 winners.

Caroline stepped up her game in the 2nd and 3rd sets, but I still feel that Fran wins this if she weren't so exhausted. In the last two sets she hit an absurd amount of dropshots and pulled the trigger on a lot of balls she shouldn't have. And I don't think that bailing out early on in a point is the style of someone who is the defending RG champ. She was never going to win that third set, but she did amazingly well to get one break back. It shows what a lion-hearted player Fran is.

Caroline has done well to make the semis but I suspect she'll be walking into a buzzsaw next round if she plays her same style next match. Na Li's striking the ball way too cleanly to hit herself out of a match in her current form. Either lift the aggression, or perhaps more feasibly, junkball more.

I'm not sure that Caroline was trying to play aggressively at the end of last year or if she was just playing better tennis than she is now but it's still very early in the season so I wouldn't necessarily draw any conclusions from the way Caroline is playing now. At the very least she is capable of playing better so maybe you will eventually see the form that you liked last year.

She has showed brief flashes of playing more aggressively, particularly on her return games. Her match in Sydney against Cibulkova was pretty abysmal but she did play one very aggressive game in the second set to break her. In the early rounds in Melbourne it seemed like she was just doing enough to win and wasn't really playing too aggressively but again there were some brief flashes of it. That kind of play has gotten her to the semis but against Li it's not going to be enough. She has shown that she can play aggressively and hit some big shots and unless Li hits an insane number of errors she's going to have to do that in her next match.

Whoever wins I really hope Caroline is not blown away like she was at Wimbledon against Kvitova.
