OK, which other mug wants to throw away opportunities against an out of sorts Clijsters? Step right up ladies...

Didn't really have an opinion on Makarova before this match, but she won me over in the end. Pity it turned to absolute shite in the last 3-4 games.

Unlucky for Makarova, but Kim definitely needs to find something to help her lift.

This match could also be a huge advantage should she have to play Kvitova later in the tourney, a bit of early match practice with the lefty spin should definitely come in handy.

I think that in the 1st set Kim run more than she run in any match since her comeback, It was hard match for her...

Jan 24th, 2011, 01:17 PM
Makarova was playing well in that first set, really moving Clijsters around and keeping the pressure on her, but she made some crucial errors that cost her the first set. I missed most of the second set, but it seems like Makarova fell apart somewhat (or did Clijsters pick up her game?). Anyway, impressive showing from the young Russian, who can look back on a great tournament.

Hopefully this will be a sign of even better things to come!

Kim was pushing herself no wonder because Makarova is a really good player and considering her form previous round.

I don't want to be rude but I'm intrigued that Makarova is only 22 and how much she looks like Steffi Graf.

Expect a great match between Kim and A-Radwanska.

I'm thinking that Kim hasn't looked very relaxed or positive the last two rounds - she's still winning, and relatively comfortably, but her body language and her play suggests to me she's feeling some pressure as tournament favourite out there - it's not very free-flowing from her at the moment.

<Sven>
Jan 24th, 2011, 01:24 PM
I don't get it, in the first round posters complained Kim might be peaking too early. And she should save her best tennis for when it's needed.
Now that she produces tennis that is good enough to win in 2 sets, but not reaching her top level, they're wondering why she isn't playing better? :p
I'm glad she won, but indeed, next time she'll have to perform better (against Radwanska), but I hope she'll manage to do just that :)

Glad Makarova played well and gave a good account of herself. She seems to have won some new fans and gained a new degree of respect this week and that's a good thing.

This was always going to be a tough match for Katya, even with Kim below her best. As thing turned out, it could have gone a lot worse. Katya hung in well and did a nice job getting out of some difficult serving situations. It could have gone even better however as Katya did make a substantial amount of untimely errors which cost her any small chance she had to take the 1st set. But overall I can't complain about Katya's performance. All in all she handled herself pretty well out there.

As for Kim, well, she looks very tough to beat, but that's not to say that she doesn't look beatable. It will take some very good tennis to take her out of the competition but there are several girls still in who if they play their best can do it.

Kim definitely started off rather moderate ...maybe even a bit cautious. (Maybe she was just sizing up Ekaterina?) OTOH, Makarova was pretty aggressive from early on. Also, Ekaterina was making bunches of UEs, but soon Kim was following suit with her own UEs.

By the time the 2nd set was underway, Kim seemed to kick it up a level, and by near the end of the 2nd she was just punishing the ball more while making more sharp-angled shots.

There was quite a bit of rallying, and both were doing good with chasing down balls. By the middle of the 2nd set, Ekaterina's game was breaking down. With Kim amping herself up, things looked dire for Ekaterina. I thought that Ekaterina comported herself well, and I better understand why she was able to go as far in this tourney as she did.

It wasn't exactly the cleanest hit match , but it was def. exciting. A fine end to a pretty solid day. :yeah:

quite unspectacular match. clijsters doesn't even need to play well to win a match against most of the players. they weren't playing badly, but there was no excitement in this match imo.
hopefully there comes a round where kim has to play at her limit to win.

On ESPN, Pam Shriver estimated that that was the case, but I didn't personally hear a confirmation of the cramping yet. Kim talked to a trainer briefly though.

Good match by both players. Kim was just solid in set 1 and seemed a bit unsure of herself at the end of the set, but she regrouped and played really well in flashes, especially in set 2. Good luck against Radwanska! :yeah:

And, congrats to Makarova, she was quite impressive! :yeah:: Dangerous player, definitely worthy of a place in top-20 if she can keep this level up consistently.

I saw Kim was given some medication during a change over. If it was cramps then it was probably some muscle relaxants or something because she was asking how long they would take to kick in.

Apparently Kim had some stomach problems for which she received some medication from the trainer...(according to the Belgian commentator)

good enough and a step up from her last match. kim doesn't need to play lights out tennis yet, and she is getting these matches done in straight sets which is all that matters.

aga i think maybe an easier match for kim as she wont be able to move kim round anywhere near the way makarova could, and aga's serve will be a sitting duck for kim.

Kim said on Belgian TV that she was feeling her left upper leg get tight, already from the start of the match, and wanted to take a pain killer (not 100% sure what exactly she took) as a precaution if the match would go to 3 sets. So nothing to worry about!

Really took it to Kim for a set or so, then faded away in the second.

It's impossible that Kimmie loses the title here, just no one is at her level, her physique is tip top, her tennis off the ground though is still so, so (...) but I have the impression she's like 50-60% in terms of level of play and can very much still improve and that's a huge problem for others in the draw (...)

:ras: to those who claim that prime Chak's game would never be effective against today's elite. Makarova plays an inferior version of it and caused Kimberley a shitload of problems. The same flat, penetrating shots without much pace but with pinpoint accuracy, the same depth and angles, the same ability to shift the direction of the ball to both corners CC and DTL.

Kimberley clearly suffered from never having played Makarova before and not having done her homework. It took a while for her to realize that she should keep the ball away from Makarova's BH (some of the angles on Makarova's CC BH were just sick), and the main reason why the second set turned out fairly easy for her was Makarova's poor play in the last few games of the match.

Kim needs to raise her level...she was playing too much defense

I noticed this too, but I'm thinking the defensive play might have been a conscious decision. Due to the cold night conditions and heavier balls, the courts played slower - different conditions from her past two matches. That, combined with Makarova's hard hitting, makes it harder to play pure offense. Makarova's hard hitting forced Kim into a defensive position early in points. And Kim's had too many errors. Sometimes it's good to rely on defense when her Plan A, offensive game is a little off.
