Maria has youth on her side, but Justine has experience and natural ability. Who regains some of their old form and who crashes and burns?

TOB. I actually think she's taking baby steps, while Justine is going backwards.

Neither. Henin isn't trying to regain her old form. She's trying for a whole new form. Henin 1.0 is history.

As for Sharapova, she has basically the same injury that ended Jennifer Capriati's career. The fact that she's on court is a success. But your shoulder isn't the same physical thing after rotator coff surgery. It's not a matter of 'healing'. Things literally attach to each other in different places.

She may eventually be just as successful a player, but she'll never have the same form.

Think Mauresmo '06 vs Maursemo '99. '06 never regained '99's form, post back-injury, but she was a MORE successful player.

Good question! :yeah:

I think Max is right. Maria is showing signs of life, but unfortuantely hasn't been able to get that big win quite yet. I think it will come. Everything takes time. Most players would not be top 15 if they had to get the surgery that Maria did and had to reconstruct many parts of their game.

I think Justine could get there too. I have a feeling though if Justine has a mediocre year without a deep run in a slam, she might call it quits again. Justine thinks she is the best player in the world and won't settle for 3rd round losses at the slams. She has the capacity and the athleticism to reinvent her game and do great things again though. It will be interesting to watch. :)

Maria.
She still has time. Tons of it. Unless she falls out of love with the sport or is pregnant.
Experience comes with age anyways.

Justine.....can't...or won't.
Even though she has the experience, she doesn't have the body to cope anymore.

I think Justine made a mistake comIng back. She was always a bit fragile and she's older now. I think she saw Kim and was tempted, forgetting that Kim is more robust and is now more mature as well. She has lost her momentum. I'm convinced Maria is done and was not as good as everyone thought anyway - she couldn't beat Amelie or Venus at Wimbledon and relied too much on power and screeching. She certainly wasn't the new Seles which many said she was. Actually I don't think the Tour is any worse off without either of them. New players have come along.

At least Maria showed she could play like the old her (3rd round), she's just inconsistent. I don't know about Justine, didn't see her play before her match against Svetlana—but she played horribly in that one. At some point last year both of them played well though. Justine was playing great tennis at the beginning, while Maria regained her form for a blip of a second during the US summer hardcourt season. The choke loss to Kim in Cincinnati brought her back to Earth.

From what I saw....Maria, because she has already showed some old form, and her problem is not technics, but she's just inconsistent...and it's also a little mental.
Justine has to change her FH, the best choice IMO would be comeback to old one.

Neither at this point, but Maria will have more chances.

I don't kno much about maria because even if a surgery is very well done it's not natural so her old form will have lost abit or so but Justine I think she is still en route to be up there, not as before but she will be on top. Now I think she has this elbow injury that's annoying her now and than especially after matches but if we look closely, most of her lost are against Serena, Kim,, Svetlana so I think it's not that bad...

Yes! Maria just owned the haters! She'll never be 100% again either of course, but I do think she's capable of winning another slam. It will take a lot of work and an equal amount of good luck, but I definitely think it's within the realm of possibility---especially if she's still in decent form after Serena and Kim retire.

As things stand right now Maria's 10-15% completely dwarfs Justine's 0%.

How did she exactly own them when she didn't really do anything?
