Clijsters defends Caroline

http://multimedia.ekstrabladet.dk/archive/00626/107812882AP012_CARO_626830m.jpg

"Caroline is not boring at all. We laugh a lot together in the locker room."

"But she's still very young. And you can't expect her to have ten years experience on the tour right off the bat. In talking to the media and giving interviews. It's all happened very quickly for her in the last couple of years. She didn't play a whole lot of junior tournaments as far as I remember. And then to become world number one so quickly - with the controversy of still having not won a slam. There's a lot of things to respond to, and it's not so simple."

"But she has a good support base, and her parents take great care of her. I'm sure she'll be able to handle it well."

"...it's part of being a professional tennis player. Talking with fans and media is a part of our job. It helps promote our sport. But it's not always easy to answer questions about subjects you haven't already given thought to or respond to grand existential questions that you may be too young to have an opinion about. That's one of the reasons I look forward to seeing Caroline grow into herself. I'm sure she'll adapt and fit the tour perfectly."

Love her or hate her, there's no denying that Caroline is very popular with the other players. Kim, Venus, Serena, Vika, Aga etc. have all said that Caroline is one of their favorite people on tour. She might play a defensive game but she's well-liked and has a great personality. It's not surprising that Kim would come to her defense because she considers her a friend.

I wouldn't call this defending. It's obvious she was answering some questions most probably by some Danish journalists though the questions themselves are missing. And these are only parts of what she said. I wouldn't imagine Kim say anything much different about anyone in such a situation.
As for the slamless No1 thing, it's pretty normal for her to sympathize. She was the first that had to deal with such a situation and such questions.

I've got to agree with you.

But...;) boring defending boring? Can't see how it helps.

Anyway, I think Piotr and Caroline manufactured this whole blather of boring Caro just to get people off the subject of her slamless no. 1 status. It is working.

Kaetchen, you're on to something. You have pinpointed the problem, and the problem is Denmark.

This whole Caro versus media issue is a clear indication of that. I think Danes are the ones who're pushing Caro into "superstardom" and not (as everyone thinks) just the WTA goons or Caro's dad or anything like that. It is the Danes who are worried the most if she is boring or not. The rest of the world both inside and outside tennis is not gonna lose sleep over whether a WTA player is boring or not. The Danes on the other hand DO care about that cuz Caro is the only thing they have. That's cuz the Danes are hungry to have an international celebrity that they can brag about against their neighbors. After all despite being very proud Scandinavians they have had to endure the fame and glory of all those Swedish celebrities and Norwegians and others in tennis as well as in various other sports and even non sport (entertainment) world. Even buggerly little Iceland had Bjork. And I clearly remember how the so called calm Danes went completely nuts when they fluked their way to European championship victory in 1992 when they defeated Germany and Holland. So clearly the Danish are proud and feel a bit glory-starved and star-starved until now when Caro arrived on the scene... cuz before Caro, the last worldwide celebrities from Denmark were a bunch of horny thugs who were committing murder, terror and plunder across England, Holland, Belgium and France.

And now at long last they have a successor: Caroline Wozniacki.

I think you do have a point. About Denmark supporting Caro to the ultimate point. I do disagree with you on us being jealous of the superstars of Norway and Sweden, because frankly I can't think of any at present time bar perhaps Zlatan who I gladly let Sweden have to themselves. Also, I know that Danish media will hype Caro to the utmost point because it sells papers, just like the Danish handball team does right now at the World Cup. But the average Dane couldn't be bothered to make an efford in making Caro look perfect or anything, only hardcore stans like kman might. Personally, I couldn't care less as long as she delivers results and makes my bankroll higher. :bounce: (By betting consistently on Caro last year you could make a substantial positive profit)

If it wasn't for Danish film genius Lars von Trier letting Bjork star in his movie Dancer in the Dark hardly anyone would know who the fuck Bjork is :D

We've had plenty of world champions and world #1s before Caroline lol. In fact, we have a bunch right now.

Oh, and we just won a Golden Globe for best foreign movie. Oscars next.

If it wasn't for Danish film genius Lars von Trier letting Bjork star in his movie Dancer in the Dark hardly anyone would know who the fuck Bjork is :D

You mean the movie she made AFTER her three top-5 UK albums? Yeah, that made her a star...nobody thinks of her as an actress because she's barely ever acted. She's a musician. That's why she even WENT to the Oscars in that bird-dress, remember? She sang the song from the movie; she wasn't nominated for an acting award.

But I digress.

As to the crux of the earlier argument about Danish media reaction, I don't think it's an entirely fair portrait, and if it were it still wouldn't be invalid. I don't think the Danish media is any more intense about Caroline than the British are about Murray, and they have FAR more internationally known sporting prowess in the main-stream sports. I don't know where the poster who speculated about the lack of Danish celebrity (which is false) comes from, but he should know something: small countries are very, VERY proud of their home-grown accomplishments. Hence the Serbian celebration over the Davis Cup win, or how crazy South Korea went over their figure skater. When you aren't a major global power in sports, it means quite a bit to punch above your weight. I think sports fans from large countries (the US, UK, Germany, Russia) can forget exactly what a big deal even a single Olympic medal means to a small country.

Also, and just to clarify, have we actually confirmed that it was a Danish interviewer who asked the question? There's a Russian-accented woman and Asian-accented (I apologize, I'm sure Chinese and Japanese accents are very different in English, I just can't tell them apart in my 3rd language) man who have been asking uniformly terrible questions in every press conference so far, so...just saying.

No need to apologize. You've given us Anja Andersen, Camilla Andersen, Anette Hoffmann and Janne Kolling (the best wing duo of all times!), Kristine Fruelund, Lotte Kiaerskou, Lene Rantala, Susanne Munk, Josephine Touray and many more. That's more than enough!
You can ship Wozniacki off to Poland as far as I'm concerned.

She may not be boring personality wise(but i think she is from her press conferences and on court interviews), but definitely she is boring in terms of playing style. I have never finished watching Pushniacki play a whole match before because her brand of tennis absolutely bores me to sleep. Everytime when I see her play I will need to off the television or I will fall asleep within minutes.
