As an Australian, I do apologize to those countries that cops our live commentary feed. No, sharapova's loss was not a "stunning loss not seen in 10 years". Well okay, amongst the Australian commentary team it was, Us Aussie fans could not get a bet on Petkovic, as betting was suspended as she was so red hot to win. And yes, once again Courier is having his annual orgasm over Roddick, but wait, Hewitt is now adding an extra load. Think of us poor Aussies, for now not only do we need to get rid of hewitt out of a tournament (and how we sighed such relief after round 1) but now we are being punished with him and courier, good lord what have we done to deserve this?.

Can i also extend an apology to our international friends who would have received the live feed of the greatest match of all time.

For some reason Channel Seven turn down the sound of the crowd, they do this in all their sports coverage clearly to make themselves the center of attention. the coverage on Fox Sport was way better even if the male commendator was painful.

Channel Seven just do not know how to cover Sport

Why do Aussies hate Hewitt so much?

He did well for Australia and besides Tomic who is still couple of years away from hitting his peak, Hewitt is the only one you have at the moment that can produce any kind of result.

Poor Bruce, he might be great at knowing all the stats but he clearly doesn't know much about Women's Tennis. Maria's lost will be disappointing but as Maria often says it is only a tennis match and there will be more matches.

I can think of several loses that would be considered more stunning than this one. Petkovic was seeded therefore is in the top part of the rankings therefore should have been given a bit more respect by Bruce and co

Fred Stollie has not to my knowledge ever worked for channel Seven.

I believe he is on ESPN and channel Nine in the days they coveraged the other three grand slams.

Well I've been getting him. I think he commentates with Pratt sometimes.

It's definitely not ESPN and at the end of the broadcast there's a logo of a big red 7.

Tracy would have been great during the third set of the Fran-Svetlana match. rather than Alan Stone who knows nothing about Women's Tennis

I really seem to remember a couple of years ago Tracy, along with Jim Courier, was doing a lot of advertising for the up coming Desperate Housewives season, among other shows. Remember how during change overs they'd pretend to be really enthusiastic about the up coming season and how they were really excited to watch it? So since DH begins in February here every year I guess it was at the AO.

Sam Smith is also commentating on the channel and I noticed she came out to interview Petkovic the otherday when it's been Channel 7 people generally doing the interviews (judging by the Ch 7shirts).

So which channel are Sam Smith & Fred on?

Sam Smith is on Channel 7. I can only assume that Fred is commentating for Fox Sports.

I'm not a big fan of the random guys they have introducing the day's play, who are not tennis commentators. I don't even know who provides them information. Someone was talking about Sam Stosur having a relatively easy match up against Dushevina, but said that Dushevina should not be counted out of the contest because she was a semi finalist at Wimbledon the year before. I'm guessing they have their scripts mixed up with Kvitova.

Jan 24th, 2011, 12:58 PM
I've always thought it was ridiculous that the network would get the commentators to promote their shows. Completely destroys their credibility. It's really hard to to have any respect for someone when they talk about Desperate Housewives every 5 minutes during a match.

I'm delighted that JA went into parliament because he was the worst commentator of the lot. My most vivid memory of JA was during the Hewitt and Safin final in 2005 when Hewitt hit a squash shot to get back into a rally which Safin eventually won by crushing an unbelievable half volley winner from the baseline. Jim says "that's ridiculous" and JA replies "I know, what great improvisation by Lleyton". The guy I actually miss is Darren Cahill.

I think the best of the current lot is probably John Fitzgerald, I've always liked his commentary. Hewitt is pretty good as well, and I think having a current player gives a good perspective, because it's easy for others to be an armchair critic and say silly things like "she should move 1m inside the baseline and flatten her shots?" Sam Smith also manages to keep things fairly objective.
