Nothing disrespectful about it - Petko is one of the nicest and most respectful players out there :worship:
I was at her match when she did the dance the first time - vs. Petrova at USO last year, long tough match and it was so refreshing to see someone a bit different doing well and showing personally after such a great win!! Now it's kinda expected of her to do the dance every time she wins, so it's not as 'spur of the moment' as it was the first few times but it's meant as something fun, it doesn't hurt anyone and it's far better to see someone with personality, rather than some of the monotone girls who always say and do the same thing :o

Well, Agassi did the "bow, kiss & wave" routine hundreds of times, after every win...I don't see how Petko-dance is any worse than that.

And as for her opponents, I don't think they ever see the dance, they're busy packing up their things and leaving the court so it is inconsequential for them. Nobody wants to see his/her opponents post-match celebrations anyway.

She isn't just being silly "once in a while".

I don't care what the fans think, but I'm interested to know what the other players on the tour might think. You really shouldn't do that in your opponent's face after winning imvho.

One moment you suggest she is being silly the next you suggest she is being in your face. First and foremost, I do not think there is anything in your face about it at all. She does not do this when her opponent is watching her but during the normal curtain calls that virtually all players do these days. I don't believe players watch their opponents curtain calls after they lose a match so I see nothing remotely in your face about Petkovic's actions.

Silly? Sure. And you say it is more than once in a while. Well I suppose it depends how you define "once in a while". Personally I think a few minutes of silliness a day is good for you.

Why is dancing any more (or less) disrespectful than any other celebration? She does it for and to the crowd, not to her opponent. I don't see how people are making a distinction between dancing and waving/jumping about/putting a racquet on your head and saluting/etc. What is it about dancing that is so offensive?

Agree with both of the above. Some types of victory celebrations are going to annoy people more than others (personally, it's Tsonga's that gets on my nerves), but it's really no big deal. It's directed towards the crowd, not her opponent.

I addressed two things in my post. Your comment that she was being silly more than once a while and also the way on one hand you suggest she is being silly and yet on the other that she is being "in your face" which is something much more aggressive and deliberately aggressive. Oh yeah i totally agree, but i see them, the fistpumping, the c'mon that sort of stuff as in the heat of the moment, and its something that most of the players do now anyway. The dance is pre-meditated and i comes after the match, its not impulsive, its a conscious choice and i can definitely see it hurting a player that's just had a tough loss.

That being said these are professional sports people and they should be able to deal with it, i just feel that if i just lost a tough match and my opponent started dancing i'd be fukin pissed.

From what I saw in her interviews, she is very intelligent, wise, and has lots of knowledge as for a sports-person. I've raised the Petkovic's personality issue last week way before today's match  Has nothing to do with Sharapova and I'll continue to pounce on the thing unless the hype vanishes :bounce:

Your personality doesn't seem to be the best either. You are acting like a bitter, little child  you should better congratulate Andy for winning today. :hearts:

She has a personality from what I see in her press conferences and interviews, but seriously she should stop that dance. Masha obviously did not want to see Petkovic do her winning dance, which is why she stormed off the court in a flash.

It is not in the least bit aesthetically pleasing and is also an insult and disrespect to the opponent. Just like when I see Tsonga's thumbs up dance after he wins, I get very irritated when Petkovic does her dance after a win. She is a tennis player ffs, not a dancer:o.

Well I mean I understand she's not a particularly gifted tennis player and she sure as hell ain't attractive. I guess this is her way of getting some media attention.

She really doesn't need a dance to get media attention, she already had a blog in one of Germanys biggest newspapers when she wasn't even Top 200 in 2006. She gets attention because she is intelligent, because she is a personality and because she's a talented player :):wavey:

From what I saw in her interviews, she is very intelligent, wise, and has lots of knowledge as for a sports-person. She made some reasonable feminist statement for annual of WTA. yeah, andrea is definitely more thoughtful than most of her idiotic, troll fans here bragging 'the personality!!1!!1!1'. She's just German, so her attempts at humor should be forgiven  I would quote Corswandt's brilliant comment about it but I forgot which thread was it.

Personality among TF members? No kidding, sir

I would have thanked Petkovic if
a) she beat Venus on merit
b) Sharapova didn't give her the win with numerous UE

Way I see it, none of the above has happened and Petkovic is the luckiest to make it onto the quarters. Luck is something I never admire and I'd be better off congratulating Kuznetsova despite her defeat who put a much better effort then all the other loses and even Petkovic as a winner...

I don't like her dance because it's just too corny for my liking.

But I have no qualms about the fact that she does dance. She can celebrate in any way she wants to as long as she doesn't, exactly, do it in front of the losing player.

I can see how some people may have a problem with it. Favourite player losing against her, you feel awful, and then you see her dancing! Not exaclty going to evoke happy feelings.

There is alot to like about Andrea Petkovic. In a women's tennis world of mostly drab personalities and players not in top shape Andrea has a great personality and an unbelievable phsyique both on and off the court! :D But in my opinion her post match win dance has to go. It's a tad silly. Sure she doesn't do it to embarrass her opponents but it's time for Petkovic to become the best tennis player she can become and not the best dancer she can become. Andrea should save her athletic style of dancing for the dance floor and her private life. :hearts:

Q. Could you talk a little bit about your dance? I know you already talked about the dance on the court, but how did you pick that kind of cool dancing move?

ANDREA PETKOVIC: Yeah, you think it's cool?

Q. Yeah.

ANDREA PETKOVIC: Well, as I said, it started off as a bet with my coach. He had an idea after I played a terrible summer season in the U.S. and I got Nadia Petrova in the first round of the US Open, which was a tough draw for me back then.

So he said, If you win, you have to do something special because it's a special match for us. I won 7 6 in the third, so, yeah, I got the inspiration of doing a dance, and ever since it's there. I'm very superstitious, so since I'm doing the dance I'm playing much better. I try to keep it up: the playing better and the dance.

I agree with all of this. I love it, I love the videos. But I do think the dance will get old fast and she needs to put it away and save it for just the biggest victories now.

And I don't think it's disrespectful to the opponent but I can understand why it would piss others off. To be honest, if I was a player and I beat her, I would shove it in her face and do my own dance moves. And I think that would be fair.

Anyway, go Petko- I'd love to see her dance her way into the final vs. Kim...although I don't see her getting past Li.

You can tell she just wants to shake that thing as soon as she wins. But she holds in her dance and shakes her opponent's hand first. Out of respect.

( I don't know what to call it) I don't see how that is much different and no one has ever really complained about that.

Seriously it gets the crowd laughing and you can tell that she is having fun with it. I doubt Maria or any of her other past opponents have had a problem with it. So if it bugs you, simply close your stream after she wins.

She is a new flavor, a new personality to the tour. The Petko dance is here to stay

I think there's a time for everything. I don't have a problem with a player acting like a goofball after a tennis match. Goofy celebrations are a time-honored tradition in many sports. If she were acting silly at, say, a political meeting, that would be different.
