Petkovic was definitely a 50/50 pick to win this, but come on. Maria hasn't played this awfully in a very long time (off the ground, that is).

Don't know what Maria was doing in this match, but she wasn't playing tennis that's for sure...her form is still a mystery to me, fluctuating from very good to absolutely atrocious. Her new coach has tons of work to do, that's for sure.

Petkovic definitely earned the win. She played great, competed well and just flat out outsmarted Maria. Plain and simple, Masha made too many mistakes. As much as I love her, I would like to see some sort of major changes, because she cannot have peaked already, as young as she is. It would've been better if she focused more on her game in the offseason, than her engagement, but what happened happened, so honestly, where does she go from here? It's just her 2nd event of the year, but I'm already frustrated with her game.

Besides that, Petkovic has a hell of a match on her hands with Li Na coming up, so I hope she's ready, because that will be tough as nails to try and win.

Words cant describe how dissapointed I am right now. I'm sure Maria is too. From 5/1 to 5/3 she started to play really well. Had she played like that the whole match she would have won. Omg what a performance from Petkovic she kept the ball deep throughout the entire match and was painting the lines on Maria. She never really allowed Maria to get any rhythm and Maria was unnerved. Petkovic did not have any ups and downs, she was only full speed ahead and only got nervous in the end closing it out but she still held her ground and even resisted a comeback from Maria.

You could see Petkovic was tightening up towards the end (her first serves were looking pretty soft), but it was a bit too late to mount a comeback.

Haven't seen any of this yet but from what I've seen of Sharapova this tournament I think it's safe to say that the damage done to her game since the shoulder surgery is irreversible, and right now it's more of a question of how long she's willing to settle for an also-ran rather than a champion, or even a legitimate contender.

Maria needs to work much harder with her new coach if she wants to have a better achievement from this point on. Based on last night's match, she has played many many night matches and I've never seen her playing BAD night matches. Anything what she has done and accomplished does not seems to be a FACTOR any more, IMO.

Come on guys. Are you really surprised? Most serious tennis followers (like me) knew Petkovic was going to beat Maria. At the very least, you should have known Andrea had an excellent chance. The corporate world continues to throws money at Maria despite the fact that she clearly ain't what she was. It's been over 3 years since Maria's won a slam and even the lower ranked players believe they can beat her now. Nobody fears Maria Sharapova anymore.
