Damn. Sad to say but Caroline will be fighting a really tired opponent. I mean, look what happened to Isner after beating Mahut? He got crushed.

But WTH, I'll believe in Fransexa! FORZA SEXA!!!

She needs to come to the net quite a bit. The wide serve and the angled forehand to the Wozniacki forehand followed by net play is the key I think. She's got the game to beat her.

Fran will be tired, that's for sure. But honestly I don't think that she's without a chance because of that. She's a fighter and she proved this once more minutes ago. Hopefully she gives Wozniacki a run for her money. So I hope Fran will wear her down in 3.

IIRC, Mary Joe Fernandez beat ASV the next day after her epic comeback over Sabatini at RG. Schiavone's a much better athlete than Fernandez, and will have a day to rest up.

Never say never.

Schiavone has her chances. Caroline is not as good as last year. Her forehand is .... wait, she doesn't have a forehand.

If Fran can rest a little bit and be in form, she can do it.

Even if Caro wins it won't look good winning a player who just played the longest women's tennis match in open era. I just respect both Fran and Sveta more than the one whose going to win the title, no matter if it's gonna be Kim or Caro or Vera or any other girls.

Because matches like that between Fran and Sveta makes me a fan of them and a fan of women's tennis, not just seeing some1 win a major title, at least this is from a spectators pov.

Caro is on a lose-lose trip here. if she loses she will be attacked for her ranking down to what she wears. If she wins she will be attacked for beating an exhausted player, then her ranking down to what she wears.

I'm still going to give Fran a chance. I really hope they get the night match so Fran can recover. If they are on at 11am... Fuck the AO organisers

It's likely it will be night match as Caro hasn't played night session yet and she's #1 seed, and it's hard to see Petkovic get night session again.

Absolutely agree.

But if Fran hadn't had such a long 4th round match I would have given her a decent shot at creating the upset, something like 40%. As it is I'd say Fran has a less than 10% chance at pulling off a victory against Caro.

But that's not an excuse. Credit to Caroline for winning her matches in an uncomplicated manner. It does help as one progresses through a tournament.

That's the second long match Fran's had - it'll be beyond belief if she's got enough in tank left to beat Wozniacki.

don't know, wozniacki stays always far behind the baseline and has no clue of what to do when she run to take a dropshot,so fran should make a lot of drop shots, searching for the angles and attacking the net, obviously wozniacki is stronger from the baseline

Yes, Fran has been on court twice as long as Caro so far; 11 hrs to 5½ hrs.
Matches like Fran-Sveta are wonderful to watch, but if you want to win a GS it's best to save such a match for the final (like Federer did in Wimbledon 09) or you´ll rarely go all the way. Some people may complain about Caro's boring 2-sets wins, but it's the way to maximize your chances.

I thought Dementieva would be tired in New Haven, playing the next day after a long match, and she almost beat Caro in another long match.
So I expect a normal match from Fran. She was running around at the end of that epic match. I dont expect her to be showing up in a wheelchair.
She's coming to play.

Not surprisingly i voted Caro esp. with the long R4 match. Because lets face it, Caro isent at the same level as she ended 2010. Hopefully she will get there soon.

I can just imagine the extra hatred she will face if she wins AO while playing only semi-ok and against none of the other favorites. TF will explode.

For those of you writing off Fran because she'll be tired, I understand. But it isn't out of the question for her to win if she can get her game back. Remember that Peng Shuai has had 7 three setters in the past three weeks, and she's still in it. It all depends on the player. However, I do think that if it goes to there sets, Woz will have the advantage.

I never see Caroline plays the BIG events with fire like great players like Fran, Serena or Maria (pre-injury). The closet thing that comes close is YEC with Clijsters which she LOST. The reason Caroline should not be regarded as Grad Slam Contender.

Having said that Caroline will win this match, I also see her wins against Li and now it also depends on How Clijsters is playing on her way, zonareva is still dangerous for Kim but not for Caro in GS Final.

Schiavone's proven she can be a big match player. Wozniacki hasn't. It two days between matches. And Wozniacki can't take it to Schiavone. One winner per game (1.25) isn't going to enough against a reigning Gs champ.

Schiavone eliminates the leader in the rankings.

Obivously I would like Caroline to win, but I hope that Fran is somewhat fresh and able to make a match of it. She deserves to after playing one of the greatest matches I've seen in a while.

I agree, Schiavone still has a great shot to win. She has some time to rest and she played brilliantly to win last night, which should give her confidence. On the other hand Caroline has been pretty flat so far.
I still think Wozniacki will win, in 3.

Jan 23rd, 2011, 06:05 PM
This is not like the Isner-Mahut match which was 9+ hours over three days. Schiavone will be fine as long as she recovers mentally, plenty of players have played 4 hours 40 minutes in one day because of rain and doubles and she gets the day off. However, Caroline will probably win this regardless of whether Schiavone is tired. She has looked very solid defensively and Schiavone doesn't have enough power to blow her off the court. I think Wozniacki wins in two tight sets.

I don't think Fran will be that affected by her last match. She's in great shape, and is an ultimate competitor. She'll throw everything she's got at Caro, and you know Caroline isn't going to underestimate her.

I think this will be a great match. Fran needs to come to net and attack Woz's forehand out wide. Caroline needs to serve well and get more depth on her shots. I'm hoping for a fun two-set win for Caroline, but wouldn't be surprised if Fran pulls it out.

The match will probably be played as the first nightly after an extra day off tomorrow, so Schiavone will have lots of time to recover.
But recovered or not, Caro is the favorite to win this match.

I have to slightly disagree. Remember the match at the YEC? It's true that Caroline won the last two sets 6-1 6-1 but both sets were closer than that score indicates and Francesca played probably one of the best sets of her career to win the first set 6-3.

I'm hoping for Wozniacki to win but I don't think people should underestimate Schiavone. She can be streaky but if she is on she has a good chance to win.

its a pity if Francesca is tired because she is so many million years better a tennis player and would normally kill her, as seen at RG

Darop.
Jan 23rd, 2011, 09:26 PM
Sure Schiavone is old, but 5 hours of tennis followed by a whole day's rest I think should be enough to get back into decent physical shape (of course, she won't be bubbly because she's been on court for many hours now, but I doubt she'll collapse on court).

When players play both singles and doubles in regular tournaments, they're often on court for 3-4 hours a day, with no resting day in between.

Zurich, 2008-Schiavone defeats Wozniacki 7-6 6-2

Roland Garros, 2010-Schiavone defeats Wozniacki 6-2 6-3

Montreal, 2010-Wozniacki defeats Schiavone 6-3 6-2

Doha, 2010-Wozniacki defeats Schiavone 3-6 6-1 6-1

The head to head is tied at 2 wins each. Certainly Schiavone is capable of beating Wozniacki but the reverse is also true. You are perfectly entitled to dislike Caroline but you are not entitled to your own facts.:p

2 things about Schiavone:
- she can't do shit against Wozniacki since RG, almost her bitch these days.
- probably tired as fuck, she had a pretty long 3 setter in her 2nd round too.

Cakewalk for Wozniacki, nothing new. Woz in two sets.
