People like to call her FO a fluke but my god this woman is the greatest fighter on tour pound for pound as BJ King would say

Saved SIX MATCH POINTS!

Good things do come to people who work hard.
Often she was known as the hardest working player on tour, and she's just reaping what she sowed.

Part of her legacy is how she improved with age, and like this match, how in big moments, she learned how to raise her game

No words :sobbing:
Almost 5 hours.

Fran saved 6MP's over several games. Coming back from 0-40 once.
At 8-8 fran led 0-40 on sveta's serve and at 30-40 Sveta hit a super short half volley and fran got to it, hit a clean winner, but couldnt not hel but touch the net, giving svetaa the point and eventually the game.

The psychial and mental strength displayed by both was second to none. No-one can ever dispute that they fully DESERVE to be Grand Slam champions.

Drama at its best :sobbing:
Nothing will ever come close.

Fran is a legend. Plain and simple.
How the hell did she win that match? :sobbing:

I encourage anyone who didnt see this match to watch it (praying it was recorded)
One of the bet matches the WTA has and ever will see

Franny is just a fucking amazing athlete. She would make Bolt proud.
Sveta seems different than usual - seems less likely to fold like a cheap tent when down.

It's a pity there had to be a loser.
Fucking amazing match. Probably deserved prime time at RLA, but the crowd sure got their tickets worth.
Both players should request for bonus prizemoney.

Just watched the last two games. Some really good point construction from Schiavone. Using the angles of the court, coming to the net at the right time, going for the right openings. Great presence of mind after such grueling match.

Sexlana fought well, but she was getting tentative and passive when she isn't behind and that's totally dumb against Schiavone.

Forum was overloaded because of this match. I can tell, no matter who plays the final it can't compare to this, this should be the final.
I just didn't want the match to end because I think both players deserve to win.

I started standing up while watching this match at 6-6 3rd set because of the hysteria and even I was tired lol. And I can tell the ball boys are tired their running speed just gets slower and slower. Very sad for Sveta but at least she made history so be positive Sveta!

Sux that ESPN cuts the Schiavone interview. Why do they do that?

Wouldn't look good for Caro if she wins Fran the next match after Fran has just played the longest women's match in open era.

Much better than the Isner-Mahut marathon. Both women played varied tennis, charged the net and actually had to rally to win points. More breaks too, but that only added to the drama. Combine that with the remarkable quality of play and you have yourself a classic.

I can't believe how good this match turned out to be. I don't think there will be another match this year that will be as good as this one. I really feel for Sveta coming up short in this one, but she is a hell of a competitor and there's nothing for her to be ashamed of. She played as unbelievable as she could, but just came up a bit short.

Schiavone is such a warrior, and to do what she just did at age 30, outlasting Kuznetsova for close to 5 hours, was just unreal, and she earned every bit of this win, without a doubt. She kept fighting and battling on, and it paid off at the very end.

Congrats Fran on a stellar win, and congrats to Sveta too. Both of them worked hard, competed hard, and they're both winners in my book. There were NO losers in this one. I love them both. Best of luck to Fran against Caro in the Qtrs.

I can only think of two or three matches that could be said to have been better quailty.

1990 French Open Sales v Graf
2002 Aussie Open Capriati v Hingis
1984 U.S Open Evert v Navratilova (i am not sure if i am right with the year but i recall them playing one classic U.S Open match around that time

I think Schavione goes into her next match with a real chance for Caroline will not be hit off the court.

Hopefully this gives Svetleva a positive boost for her game rather than is sometimes the case with these matches with the defeated player struggling to play with any real confidence.

i was cheering for kuznetsova, but i was thinking that schiavone would win as the match drew on. kuznetsova lasted longer than i thought she would.=]

schiavone has so much heart, so much mental strength. the fact that kuznetsova lasted as long as she did, breaking schiavone to stay in the match twice, was very impressive for me. but in the end, too many errors.

is schiavone a counterpuncher? she has everything a counterpuncher needs: nice compact height, speedy, great one-handed slice backhand to get back in position, does not make many errors at all, and most importantly, SO MUCH HEART. her shots also aren't that weak either and she seemed good at the net, sort of an all-court player too as i read on wikipedia

Absolute classic match. Great heart from both players. There wasn't really a loser just two very classy competitors who should both feel proud of their effort.

Having made the quarters now of all 4 slams Francesca as well as reaching the top 5, Francesca really has proved her grand slam win was very deserved. No one fights harder and gives more to win a match.

Funny thing, prior to the start of this AO loads of people were predicting this AO would be the worst ever. It has actually been one of the best slams in a long time with a heck of a lot of very memorable matches, although this one definately takes the cake and it will take some beating.

Fantastic match :) So happy that I got to watch it from the first point to the last. Franny really picker up her game (as you would expect from a champ) in that final set. She didn't look like she was going to go home with out the win. Incredible fighter, an asset to tennis in general these last couple of years.

Feel really bad for Svetlana, hopefully she recognises that the level of her tennis is far higher than what we saw last year. She is on her way back up IMO :)

Hope Franny is ready for her quarter final match.

Same. It's just that Fran is ridiculously relentless. She chases down balls most other players would give up on, even on the point that she'll fall over. She was really spreading herself out there thinly. Alas, it did pay off.

...Probably deserved prime time at RLA, but the crowd sure got their tickets worth.
Both players should request for bonus prizemoney.

I have to say it: You know... Isner and Mahut received special awards at Wimby for their epic match, and it would be _really_ nice and appropriate(!) if T.A. or the ITF made similar awards for Fran and Sveta.

As far as RLA is concerned, I guess it goes back to those well-worn arguments about ATP matches vs. WTA matches. Also, there's the whole deal about how only a handful of players are really well known among wider audiences. Despite both Fran and Sveta having GS championships to their credit, they aren't exactly household names. Maybe this year, they will both make inroads as far as gaining notereity for themselves and the WTA is concerned. The hypothetical awards for this match might very well aid in this respect...

Epic triple-sized third set. Shorter, but *much* more entertaining than the Isner vs. Mahut fifth set at Wimbledon. I'm amazed at Schiavone's resilience. She came into the tournament with a slight injury, won a tough opening match, played an even tougher three-setter against Marino in R2, came back from behind in the 2nd set against Niculescu in R3 (IIRC she was down a double break), and now this... The way she kept running down every ball until the end was incredible. Kudos to Kuznetsova too, she came so very close to the finish line but just couldn't grab that last point.

I hope this match will get the media recognition it deserves.

Q. Were you aware at all as the clock ticked to 4 hours 44 minutes that it was becoming the longest match?

FRANCESCA SCHIAVONE: No, but I was watching the clock. I say, Brava, Francesca, you are tough physically. So it's great for me, because I work to do this kind of thing. And to arrive and win a big match like this is you feel big.

Sorry I keep posting as I'm reading the interview. So many interesting quotes. Schiavoen is such a character.

Q. I think a lot of players who just before they were 30 years old won their first Grand Slam, they would say, I can't do any better than that. That's about as good as I can do and maybe slow down a bit. You seem to have done the opposite. You've improved. It's quite remarkable.

FRANCESCA SCHIAVONE: I was 29, huh. Not 30. But anyway, when you have one dollar, you want to have two dollar and then three dollar and then blah, blah. So this is the sport. Always can happen everything.

I believe it, and I keep going to work to have a new emotion and to win other trophy. It's a passion. Just with passion I think you can go forward.

Just with passion I think you can go forward.

you should listen the press conference not only read, she was laughing, when she said that, that's irony (but not when she was speaking about her sons)

Q. You seem to love creating little pieces of history. First it was Paris, and now tonight. How do you feel about the way things turned out?

FRANCESCA SCHIAVONE: Thank you. It was for me personally really fantastic. I hope one day to show this DVD to my son.

What??? :rolls:

Fantastic effort from both ladies.

The guts for Fran to keep in the match facing all those match points.

Both ladies should be proud. A great match to watch.

Fran is not a lesbian though. I don't know why some insist that she is...

Hats off to them both. I'm a bit bummed for Sveta though, she finally beats Justine again only to play the most epic match in wta history and lose.

I hope Fran has enough left in the tank though. Win the tournament!

Some people seem to accept rumors as truth.

Anyway, Fran is fantastic, but I'm curious now why she won't show it to her daughter.

Infinitely better played and more exciting to watch than that surreal, pathetic serving mugathon at Wimbledon last year.

Yet I still think a decisive set TB is in order.

fantastic fight by 2 wonderful women :worship:

this is what WTA is all about - women like these 2... charachter and balls so to speak, not horror shows like Sharapova, Azarenka, Ivanovic and Jankovic
