CAROLINE WOZNIACKI: Exciting. I've done a lot of exciting things, I think. The most exciting? There are some things I just can't tell because it wouldn't look good (smiling).

Well, the other day I went to the park and I saw this kangaroo lying there. If you've seen, I'm playing with the thing on my shin here. It was lying there. So I wanted to go over and help it out. As I went over to it, it just started to be aggressive and it actually cut me. So I think that's pretty exciting. But I learned my lesson and I just started running away.

Q. You went to help it out? You thought it was dying or something?

CAROLINE WOZNIACKI: I thought I was going to be nice and try to help it out because it was just lying there. I thought maybe it needed some help. I wanted to take it up and maybe bring it somewhere.

Q. It was a baby?

CAROLINE WOZNIACKI: It wasn't big. It was a baby. I just wanted to help it out. I found out that I shouldn't do that.

Q. Scratch you pretty good?

CAROLINE WOZNIACKI: Yeah, it scratched me pretty well. That's why I'm playing with this tape on my shin.

Q. Did you go to the doctor?

CAROLINE WOZNIACKI: Yeah, I went to the doctor. They cleaned it and everything. They wanted to do a few stitches. I said, There's no way you're going to do stitches. I just told them to glue it together. I'm playing with the Steri Strips. It's looking fine. So everyone is happy.

Q. You've done a lot of boxing. Did you think about boxing the kangaroo as it took a swing at you?

CAROLINE WOZNIACKI: I'm sure that was ready for some boxing. I like boxing.

It looked so cute. But once it started scratching me, I was a coward and I run away.

Q. It wasn't a park near your hotel in the city?

CAROLINE WOZNIACKI: No, it was just a little bit outside of the city. We were just outside with some friends because we have a lot of friends here. They wanted to show me around the park. There was a kangaroo that didn't want to be nice to me.

And in the Internet age, it doesn't take long for BS stories to spread everywhere. Just saw this on Yahoo:

In this Saturday January 15 photo, Denmark's Caroline Wozniacki, left, shows a unidentified training partner a bandage
on her leg at a practice session prior to the start of the Australian Open tennis champions in Melbourne, Australia.
Wozniacki said Sunday, Jan. 23, 2011 that she was scratched by a kangaroo at a park outside Melbourne before the Australian Open began.

No, because Caro told the same kangaroo attack story to the Danish press almost a week ago (January 18) (http://ekstrabladet.dk/sport/anden_sport/tennis/article1489515.ece), before Matt Cronin and Stephanie Myles said to the Danish newspaper Ekstra Bladet that her press conferences were boring (http://ekstrabladet.dk/sport/anden_sport/tennis/article1490821.ece).

All the Danish press already revealed on January 18 that the story about the kangaroo was just a joke and that she injured her shin when she hit a machine at the gym.

Sources:
http://ekstrabladet.dk/sport/anden_sport/tennis/article1489515.ece
http://spn.dk/andensport/tennis/article2309103.ece

The joke was also mentioned in Caro's forum on Janaury 18, but I guess the international press haven't read Tennis Forum or the Danish press as they fell for the same story a week later:
The plaster and ankle support was not serious. It was a kangaroo!!!!!!!!

"I tried to help a kangaroo in the park, and it became a little aggressive, and I got one on the foot, " says Dane, who in the second round of the grand slam tournament meets American Vania King

Luckily Hewitt's kid didn't bight her ear, or kick her somewhere.
At least that was the 'fun' story to them media people. Apparently the real story is, she had a 'coming together' with some equipment in the gym. Quite a taped up ankel :(

Caroline Wozniacki bio (http://www.australianopen.com/en_AU/players/overview/wta313402.html)

THE MODERATOR: Everyone, thanks for coming back. Caroline just wanted to say a few words, and also make a clarification. So she's going to start out and then we'll take questions.

CAROLINE WOZNIACKI: Well, I want to come back, because I just wanted to clarify and say I'm sorry if I've caused any harm or made your job a little bit more difficult. But the kangaroo story, I made it up because it sounded better than what actually happened. I walked into the treadmill so that wasn't really you know, that's my blonde. Sometimes that happens.

I'm sorry if I caused an inconvenience. I really didn't mean to. I didn't think you would believe it because I already told the Danish press and they know. I thought it was out there already. So I just wanted to apologize and that's why I'm here. I'm hoping that the press conferences in the future will still be funny. I promise if I make a joke like this, I'll make sure to clarify it before I leave.

Again, I didn't think that it was going to, yeah, spin this way.

Q. I wonder if you ever are tired of being called Wozniacki when you are Wozniacki.

CAROLINE WOZNIACKI: Well, um, that was a different spin. I didn't expect that one. Um, no, not really, because since I was little in Denmark, it's tough for Danish people to pronounce Wozniacki so I always said Wozniacki. Actually I stayed with it and thought I should just keep it like this and keep it for now. Polish people call me Wozniacki or Wozniacki.

Q. When people thought you were being serious, how did you feel. Stupid, silly?

CAROLINE WOZNIACKI: No, I mean, I went to ESPN straightaway and I clarified that this was not true. I didn't think you would believe it because I thought it was a story I thought it didn't sound right.
But I guess I did really actually I'm a good actress I think. Maybe I should ask for a part in a movie.

Q. When did you decide to go with that story? Spur of the moment? Walking in?

CAROLINE WOZNIACKI: Well, I just heard that the story was getting out there and actually a lot of people believed it. Then I was like, Okay I think it's better that I come back and apologize. Because I heard that to get the story pulled back again was quite a bit of work. So I just thought I would come back and apologize.

Q. When did you decide on the story itself, to tell the story?

CAROLINE WOZNIACKI: Well, I just actually it came up in the Danish press. They asked me happened to your leg with the cut. I was thinking, doesn't sound too good that I actually walked into the treadmill. I was like, Okay, kangaroo, we're in Australia, so a kangaroo scratched me. I thought that was a bit funny. Afterwards I said it was a joke and everyone was laughing. I just thought to make it a bit more fun and mix if up a little bit.

Q. Did you have a phone call from Woody Allen already or not?

CAROLINE WOZNIACKI: No.

Q. Will you be going to the zoo to see a kangaroo?

CAROLINE WOZNIACKI: I should now. I heard they can box but I heard they're really harmless most the time.

Q. Maybe we can all come along and see what unfolds.

CAROLINE WOZNIACKI: Yeah, if I go, I'll let you know.

Q. If you saw a journalist lying down in the park, would you help him?

CAROLINE WOZNIACKI: (Laughter.) Of course. I'm a good girl, so I always help people in need.

Q. Was it your idea to do another press conference or did someone ask you?

CAROLINE WOZNIACKI: No, no, it was my idea. I felt bad. I felt like it was just a good thing to do. I didn't want to come into another press conference knowing that maybe someone was upset with me because of the story. So I just wanted to clear it all. Hopefully we can be in good spirits next time I come in.

Q. What would you normally be doing now in preparation for the second week?

CAROLINE WOZNIACKI: Probably relaxing, watch some tennis on TV.

Q. So your mind's been elsewhere for the last couple hours?

CAROLINE WOZNIACKI: It's okay. I have a day of rest tomorrow, so I have plenty of time. Seeing all guys here, it's great. All of you good looking guys and girls, it's really hard for me to concentrate right now, because I'm just smiling, everyone is smiling back at me. So it's all good.

Q. Your press conferences are definitely not boring anymore. Are you happier with that?

CAROLINE WOZNIACKI: You know, definitely think that this shows more of my personality. I think also the journalists are asking me fun questions. I think it's a bonus for all of us. You don't find me boring, I don't find it boring sitting here. We all gain from it.

Q. Is it a part of your personality doing practical jokes?

CAROLINE WOZNIACKI: Yeah, I always do that. I always just joke around with my dad or friends. We have a good time and just laugh about it afterwards.

Wozniacki said Sunday, Jan. 23, 2011 that she was scratched by a kangaroo at a park outside Melbourne before the Australian Open began.

There's actually nothing wrong with that story -- it isn't saying a kangaroo attacked Wozniacki, it's saying that she said one did.

This nonsense is too cute. I don't know who is more annoying, her or the press room hacks. In the context of the match her next opponent just played, it's also kinda unflattering. If she's out to be the next Balloon Boy, she's doing a good job I guess, but other players are getting press because of their tennis.

Seriously, I don't get how people think it was so funny...I didn't find nothing funny about it, in fact it smacked of her desperation to try and show she has a personality hidden somewhere :tape: (Didn't find anything she said during the 'Rally for Relief' funny either.....trying way too hard) I think she came across as sounding stupid. She'd be much better focusing on her tennis than all this bullshit with the media :o

I don't like Caroline really, but is it a new rule that the media need to be bitches towards her? I mean all these mind games and critiques - she's a bad #1 AND boring, it's like everyone's picking up on the story. Not that I disagree, but it's a bit too much IMO. Serbian commentator was hilariously rude after her match with Sevastova saying how the match proved that the WTA is a mess. And then during her on court interview, when she was sucking up to the people in the stands saying how she enjoys playing for such a great crowd, he said, with a disgusted tone: "when someone lacks charisma, not even these little crowd-pleasing words can help". :haha:

Now this kangaroo hoax and the apologies. Few days ago it was about her interview ridiculing the media for asking boring questions. Media is totally getting to her. She's making herself look like a desperate mess.

Oh Gud. So you've given up on the boyfriend now?

This 'kangaroo' story is about a week old and was a little humerous joke. You see, Australia is quite well known for kangaroos and she's playing a tennis tournament, which is taking place in Australia. Connect the dots GM people. The real story about the 'tape' is she had a 'coming together' with some equipment in the gym.

CAROLINE WOZNIACKI: Who I fear? I don't fear anyone actually. I'm feeling confident. I feel like I can beat anyone on a good day. I think they have to fear me when they're playing me.

The thing is, she can't just be funny/witty with her answers, she has to invent some weird stories.
It isn't natural at all.

She should just be herself and stop with the antics/over the top interviews. It's not natural or who she is. Creating a persona to appear cool and hip is beyond lame. Caroline should realize that as long as she holds the #1 spot the media is going to throw darts at her everyday. They'll NEVER be satisfied regardless of what she does or says.

I'd rather hear her say stuff like this--because you really do need confidence to consistently win at this game--than manufactured attempts to be "interesting." She should just be herself and let the chips fall where they may. In fact, maybe her efforts to be amusing is just being herself, don't know and to a degree don't care. I'd just rather see her manage to achieve a major. Forget what the press (and the fans and antifans) has to say. Live life.

:haha::haha:Caroline isn't the first non-slam #1 player to be raked over the coals and with the current system still in tact she won't be the last. In some ways I feel bad for her because the media can be so demanding . However, I realize that with the #1 spot comes a lot of responsibility. Often times if you're unproven the media and fans are harsh. My hope is that she wins a slam this year just to relieve some of the pressure because pulling stunts like this is ridiculous.

What did you expect her too do, bat the kid over too her mum with her racket for the fun fun affect, add a little slapstick to the show.

Christ, the kid was terrified and upset, and his Dad and Henin just looked on and grinned.

Players just finished a match and they're fined if they dont do it, so they go talk to the media.
The media decided Caro as #1 should tap dance & tell jokes.
So she's giving them something to write.

Caro haters may have a point when debating her game and style of play; but since she is ranked No 1, and is a consistent winner their arguments get weaker and weaker. Once Caro wins a slam and this one seems as likely as ever the arguments will become even nonsensical. Where Caro haters truly lose all credibility occurs when they take umbrage at innocuous stories like this one.

Nah, in fact her PR team was against it. It's all Caro wanting to sock it to the press.

Obiously with the kangaroo thing, though, she went a little too far and her team had her go back and apologize.

I doubt she planned for the press to ask her about that small band-aid on her leg. I imagine it like this: Press wants to know how she got "wounded" and she makes an off-handed comment that it was a kangaroo (hey, we're in Australia!) and to her surprise the press buys it and she just goes along with it to see how far she can take it. And for some reason, the press eats it all raw. Not really a big deal.

The people here who think it was some big pre-planned stunt (and therefore judge it in that context)... the joke is on you.

Great players get criticised all the time here. Read a Justine thread.
Really has nothing to do with being #1 or winning majors.

Caro is ultra successful at 20, everyone with an IQ over 40 understands that, but here, being successful is not relevant to the conversations.

Its just part of a world of opinions.
I just find the Caro bashers more annoying than they find Caro. So it creates a mix that never gets settled. A message board never ending insult war.

I'm all for trying to be funny, but this just doesn't make sense at all. First of all I don't think it's the right time to make up a story when asked what the most exciting thing you have done in your life is. Secondly it would be fun to say AT FIRST, and it would might have been taken as a light joke, however (esp after watching it on video) the journalists go on and on about the details, and the way she answers all seriously and not in a very jokingly manner kind of takes away the whole purpose.

Better luck next time.

I agree. Was it the Australian media in particular that has been mentioning her supposed lack of personality that's made her feel she has to become some sort of comedian or was this happening last year? She's now ended up looking a bit silly, making up tales to get a laugh. Whoever advised her to do that was dead wrong. She should just continue doing her talking on the court. When Steffi Graf was breaking into the top she was considered even more monosyallbic and all business than Caroline, so she's not alone.
