The most impressive performance of the tournament by any player. Na wasn't just hitting really cleanly, she was actually using her brain too, loading the shot with topspin whenever it was really deep and using some great angles!

Tremendous tennis, so refreshing to watch.

Na Li defeats Vika Azarenka in straight sets 6-3 6-3!
Her second Quarterfinal at the Australian Open in a row. She's been playing very well lately showing Na-GOAT play rather than Error Na play. She faces the winner of the Petko Masha match.

Loving this result. Gorgeous, controlled aggression from Li Na. Reminiscent of Mary Pierce in '95.
It would make my month if she could win the Aussie Open. The geopolitics of that win would be phenomenal.
And she and her game (as it is now) are quite likable to boot.

 Azarenka is so overrated and I will never understand it. Expected. Azarenka has NO ANSWERS to this in her game.

Against top players she gets broken at minimum 2x a set even when playing well.
She's underpowered and gets overwhelmed off the ground.
Her side-to-side movement is not sufficient for someone who has no capacity to dictate points.

I think for the forseeable future Azarenka has maximized her potential as a solid 9-12 player.
She has shown 0 qualities of winning a grand slam at the present time.

maybe it's just me. Vika plateaued in terms of achievement. Her game should have carried her way further(at least one GS SF). What went wrong?

Your first statement is true. Your second is not.

Azarenka has no weapons to hurt the best players. She just gets routinely dismissed in rallies with the upper class of players and she can't serve.

If you can't attack you have to be able to defend. She can do neither, instead she has a weak mixture of both which only works against lesser players that she is able to actually dominate.

Na played awesome tennis. Today I realized that Vika just doesn't have a big power game, her strength is consistency with a heavy ball. If Vika wants to ever win a slam she is going to have to take more risk and ad more variety because she cannot blow the big hitters off of the court when they are on.

Congrats Na Li.

Vika's backhand is useless today, her angle is quite mediocre as well.Of course Li Na played really awesome, I have a feeling she could win the whole thing.

~Cherry*Blossom~
Jan 23rd, 2011, 02:24 AM
That was really really good. Her shots on the run were amazing. I expected Li to win, but I thought she might mess up at some point in the match. However, she kept up her level. When it look like she might be losing it, she regrouped.

The most impressive performance by a woman in this year's tournament. Even more impressive than Kvitova yesterday.

Azarenka's forehand :tape: Seriously she needs to work on that shot. Everytime Li hit to that shot when she was in trouble, it allowed the point to be restarted because Azarenka can't do anything with it.

Loved the on court interview too.

And that's where Sam Smith went :fiery: Aussie television taking Sam away from me :fiery: Now I have to make do with that annoying Scottish guy during the BBC coverage!

Na was simply too good today. I think a lot of really good players would have lost to her today.

Vika didn't play terribly. She had a rough patch on serve, but other than that she played pretty well, but Na was just on fire. Yes, Vika can improve her serve and her forehand but it isn't like they're absolute crap. She was completely suffocated by Na today. And that's simply that.

If Na is able to keep this level up she'll win the whole thing, but knowing her she'll hit the wall sooner rather than later.

It isn't.. but she doesn't have to do much with the opponents she's played against. Just look at her results from last year. Run here.. than several losses in a row there..

Also the first match she's had a positive W/UE ratio I believe at this year's AO

Her serve is the biggest problem. She can rally though

And you've stated the problem. Azarenka can RALLY. She can't kill.

If you rally with someone that hits harder than you, moves better than you. Typically what is going to happen(especially if they are playing at a decent level)?

She's very good at beating lower ranked players where her game actually works, but her ceiling is as soon as she meets anyone capable of outhitting her.

For Azarenka to take the next step she absolutely must improve her serve. This is her only chance to rise above her current plateau. I honestly don't know if she can do it, but I wouldn't count her out at age 21.

No surprise. I hope Azarenka can get her act together and become a future star but right now she is way overhyped. People built her up for this event based on her near wins over Serena. However that was silly since Serena has alot of near losses in all her victories here, probably 12 total out of her 5 titles. And furthermore last year Serena played some of her worst tennis to the point she was 6-4, 4-0 down and yet still found it easy to come all the way back from that huge deficit against Azarenka by just starting to play well, even with Azarenka playing her very best that day. I agree Azarenka did not choke and that is even more the point. Usually against a top player Serena coming back from that major a deficit would mean so and so choked, atleast 15 various people, but Azarenka is so inferior that Serena could come back at will from that spot vs her without her choking. So really her matches vs Serena in Australia, especialy last year, only speak more to her limited abilities as a top player than anything. Thank goodness the silly myth some tried to create that only Serena can beat her here, or that Serena kept her from winning the whole title the last 2 years (LOL) has been firmly put to rest.

She showed alot of promise 2 years ago and even though I wasnt a big fan I was excited about her prospects but she has made NO progress since then. If she doesnt vastly improve her serve, movement, power, virtually everything, she is going to find herself continue to be passed by by the younger girls of her generation like Wozniacki and the young German girls we see playing well here.

Tremendous tennis, so refreshing to watch.

Was rooting for Vika but I must say I agree with your post. I was in awe of Na's game and the way she played tonight and totally understand now how she won some of the matches she've won. It was indeed tremendous tennis.

I think for the forseeable future Azarenka has maximized her potential as a solid 9-12 player.
She has shown 0 qualities of winning a grand slam at the present time.

As much as I like Vika, I have to agree with this.

I see nothing in her right now that says "I am winning a Slam".

Maybe one day, but not in the immediate future...

Well done Li :) She can make the final here

Expected result, Azarenka really need to get free points on her serve otherwise:help::help:
Just watched the first set and Azarenka had many chances to break Li in the very beginning but sadly she failed anyway it was a good first set but I'm not that impressed by Li's serve she was good from baseline but serve was quite weak and against Sharapova(if she plays her) she needs to step it up.

Leo_DFP
Jan 23rd, 2011, 05:21 AM
To be honest, I was pretty disappointed by Vika's play.

But I'm not surprised; I picked Li. This was ALL too predictable. Azarenka always finds herself losing to the first really in-form player she meets in a Slam. It's hard to see her stepping up and getting to her first GS SF any time soon when she has performances like these. Oh well, she truly is Sharapova-light.

Leo_DFP
Jan 23rd, 2011, 05:25 AM
Meanwhile, Li could very well end up winning this event. I think she's the favorite in her half now. IMO she matches up well against Sharapova because she really takes the Russian out of her rhythm - that's if she were to play Sharapova. And she did beat Woz here last year although it'd be far tougher in the SF.

Na's margin for error is so minimally low, it's either the last tip of the line or 5 metres out. Kind of annoying if she plays your faves and it's the last tip of the line throughout the match. Na played flawless, she's winning this tournament if she keeps this up.

Once again, Vika runs into the player in the best form of her life. Usual bad netcords as well.
But it's okay, pretty much no one else remaining in the field would've done much against Na today. She fought well.

I agree. Besides this, she's someone who can play incredible tennis when playing well. She's not very mentally fragile either, she just keeps going. In some matches definetly, but i don´t agree looking at her performance yesterday. I think she actually played a smart match. Have never seen her hit with as many topspin as yesterday, she was really applying controlled agression. Varying topspin with her usual flat strokes, and instead of hitting everything deep she was making nice angles. Perfect defense on top of that, she did what she needed to do. She had a plan, definetly.

Li's performance has been given a bit of fanaticism.

She's put up much better performances than a +5 W/UE ratio and it wasn't completely hit or miss. She hit several wonderful crosscourt shots to move Azarenka out of the court and then hit the winner down the other line.

Obviously Li isn't the most tactical player out there, but no one can say she just swung for the fences in this match.

This is how I feel. Li played some of the smartest tennis I've seen from her against Azarenka, but I don't see her maintaining the level of play throughout the back-end of this tournament. I usually can't stand her tennis, so this was an improvement, but I'd be very upset if she won the whole thing playing hit-or-miss ball bashing.

Sad Azarenka lost, but this match showed a lot of her limitations. It makes vikapower mad too, so that's an upside I guess.

Li in fairly easy and wholly anticlimactic str8ts, something like 3 and 2.

Yup.

I can't for the life of me understand why would anyone, let alone someone in Shriekarenka's camp, think that what works for Sunshine (a game whose only purpose is not to make errors) would work for her. It's not just the obvious fact that Sunshine is faster and covers the court better - it's that, while Sunshine constantly takes pace off the ball and hits plenty of framed shots and other such unintentional junk that throws her opponents off their rhythm, Shriekarenka always hits the same ball, with the same pace and depth, a ball that isn't big enough to draw errors out of her opponents and instead provides them with a steady, metronomic rhythm (just like Zvonareva's ground game). An ideal practice session.

It seems that every time I see Shriekarenka play, she's looking more underpowered. She's completely harmless now - just a flat out pusher, and a flat out pusher that seems unable to change her game plan when her opponent isn't missing.
