 I called this since the first second I seen their places in the draw. The first decent flat-hitting player Stosur faces off clay she will lose.

This should have been even more emphatic, but Kvitova, like her compatriots Safarova and Vaidisova, is a poor returner.

In the rallies Stosur could do nothing. Kvitova's flat shots breaking down Stosur's rigid BH or pummeling her FH to warrant a shank or a mid-court sitter to punish.

We don't even have to go into Stosur's return of serve.

Petra was just too good. Sam was very mediocre.

Jan 22nd, 2011, 09:50 AM
OMG Sammy can be the most frustraing player to try and support, she just looks so pained and uptight and nervous, which I think makes her just either hit winners too early, or play too safe or just make silly unforced errors. She really needs some sort of therapy to loosen up, seriously. I think her main problems are mental. She has a great serve, great forehand she just is a mental midget.

Sammy go look at some videos of past champions like Graf and Evert and study their composure, and loosen up!!!

Sam :o That was really bad...she never even tried to get on the front foot in that second set. Not sure what her game plan was, but there was no evidence of it. She was just reacting the whole match...:( So disapointed because she had a good draw (probably the best she will ever have) to the semis.

Kvitova a chance for the final IMO :)

I stayed up late rooting for Sam but Kvitova just out-played Sam in rallies hitting winners after winners omg. She's playing extremely well and consistent. Must be one of the best performance so far in the women's side of AO 2011.I think she is playing better than when she was in Wimbledon last year. And now there's no Serena, she might just be the savior of wta?

Sam really has to improve on the rallies cause her playing style is just not enough to win players that are playing well, like Kvitova.

Very disappointing for Stosur tho cuz I was hoping for a native win.

btw is it just me or is petra's outfit kind of low cut? And in some angle her abdomen seems ripped.

"WATCH OUT FOR PETRA KVITOVA"

I wish Woziacki was nearer for a wig-snatching.

Seriously though, Petra has improved so much. She's a natural. Nice to see at a time when the WTA is so labored.

I thought Stosur might get to her with slices and changeup, but no way. Petra's gotten better at handling it.

Sam went down the line maybe twice in the whole match she just hit most stuff CC or slice the ball Petra is slow u have to move her to take away her timeing. Basicly you want her hitting on the run. But Petra she was hitting the ball big so maybe sam had no chance to go down the line. I think she can win the AO. Petra was a joy to watch and hope plays like this the rest of the AO.

Not that much of an upset IMO.

After watching her in Brisbane and now at the AO, I'm more impressed by Kvitova this year than I was last year. Her hitting, while still powerful, doesn't seem as reckless as before, and her movement seems to have improved a bit as well. She played a great second set. Mentally, she showed remarquable composure, especially when it came to closing out the match. She looked really calm, didn't let the crowd affect her at all.

Kind of glad this happened. At least this will shut up the Aussie media now.

Sam didn't play very well (despite what she said in her presser), but even if she did she still would have been beaten. Petra was the better player and would've beaten most players out there tonight. Having said that, watch her go and lose to Flavia now...

Sam was just smacked off the court, and to me it's not a surprising result at all.

Flavia is a better mover then Sam and is a great pusher but i dont think she will win. I could be wrong as i would love to see a Petra vs Kim match-up since kim will smash everyone else off the court or over power them.

Jan 22nd, 2011, 02:07 PM
Stosur is shown again how much of a joke she is against any aggressive flat striker on hard courts. Anyone who can take the ball early, play inside the court can boss her around from the very first hit and since her movement and backhand are not even top 100 material chances are she'll lose that point. Kvitova didn't do anything special, just played above average, aggressive tennis that's meant to be played on this surface and Stosur had no answers. Her moonball backhands, clown kick second serves got crushed right back at her and she found herself constantly pinned behind the baseline. The score should really have been 6-3 6-1 if Kvitova wasn't such a choke on bps. Stosur will never ever come close to winning anything off clay as many lesser, but aggressive minded players have schooled her on surfaces where aggressive flat striking pays off. Stosur :bigwave:

I'm obviously very disappointed not to win," said Stosur.
"But I actually thought I played really well. I don't really know how I lost it, to be honest.
"I felt like I started playing a bit better and was probably on top of her and then all of a sudden it was gone and I was a set down.
"I thought she played extremely well pretty much the whole way through. I think it was a match of a point here and a point there and she got the ones that really mattered.
"It's a tough loss, but I think I can walk off thinking I played quite well and did everything that I could."

One match at a time for Petra. She has the scale of game to beat Flavia as convicingly as she did Stosur.

Another thing in her favor is that she's on a winning streak and has been winning matches in straights. When she hits a tough spot or makes a few errors, she's remained very composed.

Flavia's form against Peer of all people was all over the map. She may have rallied against Peer, but her form for the first 1/2 of the match was godawful. If she starts that way against Petra, the match will be over before she has a chance to come back.

She played to the best of her limited ability on hard court and got blown away by a player who wasn't afraid to crush her overrated serves back at her and wasn't intimidated by her overrated topspin game. She was being honest.

The thing that's different with Petra is what a couple people have pointed out -- she's now reached the 4th round of all 4 majors (semis of one and quarters of another).

So even viewed as purely a streaky player, her winning streaks occur during majors. More of the WTA should wish to have that problem.

To be honest most of the Czech players -- Petra, Iveta, and Lucie -- have started out good this year. Petra and Lucie look like they have made changes to solidify their games during the offseason. Petra is a more naturally gifted athlete than Lucie though, and her shotmaking isn't as high risk.

I'm sure Petra will have her rough patches this year but I think she's now committed to making a mark and moving up the rankings. It's nice to see a gifted athlete with a big game that isn't labored or forced.

OMG come on people...Petra Kvitova is just a brainless ballbasher who has a weak game. She counts on luck to win her matches. When shes lucky, she bashes the ball into the court and flukes her way to wins. She is a streaky player and more often than not plays poorly, getting into slumps. Such a player will not climb up the rankings on the tour. I really don't understand the hype over Mugvitova.

Every time she flukes her way to win matches, tennis loses. She is the WTA's Jeremy Chardy. Both of them are mugs with similar game, but very inconsistent and stay low down the rankings, unable to have a breakthrough. When Kvitova plays Bepa in the quarters, her weaknesses will be exposed by the deft and creative shotmaking of Bepa. She will be forced into errors and reveal what a mug she truly is.

Unexpected.

I keep forgetting that Kvitova is such a good competitor - 5-3 down in the TB, still pulled it off without much of a fuss or histrionics. Served out the match with such ease and even flair you'd think she was playing an exho.

That competitiveness and coolness under pressure are the main reasons why Kvitova's results are already beginning to look out of proportion to her actual skill and athleticism levels. She's unique among ballbashers in the sense that, when it really matters, she raises her focus level (and you'll notice that, at crunch time, she'll often return flat, deep and hard serves that she'd be hitting homeruns off just a couple of games before) and plays her best - sometimes it's just impressive hit-and-hope tennis similar to VIP Ivanovic's MP Down Mode; but nowadays, she even plays smartly on occasion. Having sound technique on her groundstrokes doesn't hurt either, as they're less likely to fall apart under pressure. Stosur's loopy shots helped Kvitova stay for surprisingly long in several rallies, and she even managed to turn a couple of them around with fine running FHs. Her performance early in the 2nd set was just unreal.

Sammy Biceps looking clueless, subdued, reluctant (or unable?) to really go for her shots, and quite harmless from the ground, as she often does when facing opponents who can hit the ball deep and flat. And in the 2nd set she simply froze. Only her serve kept this somewhat tight.

I really hope Kvitova can keep this up. She always reminded me of Mary Pierce. Dreadful when off but nearly unplayable when on. She's one of the very few young WTA players who actually have potential to be a top player and able to compete due to a big game backed up with a excellent mentality. Obviously Petra needs to work on having more good days than bad, has she was very poor after Wimbledon, but if she continues this I can see her having another SF at this tournament.

She has the power, the techinque, the variety and the mentality to be outstanding. With work on her consistency and movement, who knows what the future holds.. :)

Actually have to disagree here. I thought it was pretty expected. Kvitova's game matches up so well against Stosur's, with her height and the fact that she's left-handed meaning that Stosur's kicker simply bounced up into her hit zone, as we have seen with Sharapova and Venus in the past too - and we all know what Stosur is without her serve. Not to mention the fact that Stosur's abysmal return meant easy service holds for Kvitova.

I really think it's time to start reevaluating Kvitova and her potential. While a wig snatcher, anti-Woz and Top10 killa girl she most certainly is, Im beginning to think that she could be a factor. A consistent factor. She just seems to be learning so quickly. As you said, she seems to be slowly realising the role that tactics can play in her game. She also has increased her speed and is pretty agile now, with her making a number of crucial gets and then flipping points around thanks to her brilliant technique. She also continued to look more than comfortable at the net, serve and volleying once and then charging the net so confidently on that last point.

So it's interesting. I reckon we'll have a better idea by the end of the year of whether she's destined to become a MAJOR factor, or else a top 20 upset specialist. I don't think it can be anything in between. I hope it's the former though, cause she's easily one of my favourite players to watch when firing.

A comparison might help. Safarova has a better, more reliable serve and a bigger ground game. Kvitova is a much better match player and has more touch. Movement is similar (i.e. equally poor). Overall I'd say Safarova has more game.

And it's obvious that Kvitova is in peak physical condition and sharp as a rapier, something she won't always be in her future career.

So my guess is that this is as good as it gets.

But I'm glad that :cheer: KvittyBabe :cheer: pleases King Tut. ;)

What I was most impressed with in this match was Petra's ventures up to the net. She looked hopeless at this in the first set, but then started to make those volleys in the second.

She also began picking up on Stosur's repeated attempts to hit winners in back of her. A lot of less wrong-footing. There was such a big learning arc in that match alone.

Plus, she got serious about losing those 15 pounds. That's brought on confidence as well. I hope Pavly and Kleybanova look to her as a role model.

I disagree that Safarova has more game.

Lucie does use her lefty serve better than Petra. She has the serve outwide to both sides with suitable spin and typically looks to play the next shot down the opposite line.

In terms of rallying high balls to Safarova's BH completely diffuse her game and she has not yet shown a counter to this.

And true. Safarova is definitely a better player with an even more explosive game, but obviously the mental side counts for so much these days and she is laughable in that compartment. I'm hoping it will be the difference betwen Lucie's mid-ranked obscurity, and what will lead to Kvitty grabbing those sunshine-infused golden locks and dragging La Borz, kicking and srcreaming, off the top spot.

Disappointed that Sam lost, but it wasn't unexpected. When the draw came out I thought that given her really good matychup against Zvonareva, Sam would have a pretty good chance for the semis if she could get past this match. I know some people are delighted that Sam lost because it shut up a lot of the Aussie media who were hyping her up, but that's nothing compared to the antihype/toxic that a lot of people post here. So the loss is disappointing on two counts.

I've only seen Petra play at Wimbledon last year and during her matches this summer, so I don't know much about her game when she goes off. But she looks unplayable when she's having a good day, and she has a good temperament which I think is most important of all. Definitely should be ranked higher than she is right now.
