I can not believe how badly Cornet played. Her slice backhand is the most loltastic shot i've ever seen. All she did was spin the ball midcourt all match long. She got decent height but no pace and terrible depth. Anytime she tried to do anything with the ball she missed. And she's not even that fast nor does she have good defensive skills. Kim just sank to her level.

kim was crap for the most part, but very rarely do players go through slams not having one match where they were off form winning a match like that is what matters.

Why are you taking a tennisforum thread so seriously? The fact that Cornet would double bagel me in 20 minutes has nothing to do with the fact that this match was a total shitfest.

So now are book reviewers not supposed to give bad reviews of books because the authors are better writers than they are? Are restaurant critics not supposed to give bad reviews of restaurants because the chefs cook better than they do? I'm not sure what your point is.

Why a lot of people are telling that Kim wil win? Are you so impressed with her game?
Even as a fan I have to say no. The first 2 round were ok, but today was very bad. Can't believe she won playing like this. So many UE's. The next match will tell a lot. Petrova or Makarova, both not easy. Maybe the revanch factor will be nice if she's facing Petrova again. But it is definitely to soon to say she will win. To many good players are still in it. Vera was playing really well today so if they will face eachother, that will be very difficult. But we will see, first the 4th round matches ;)

Clijsters has been very unimpressive so far. She should be grateful she hasn't faced an in-form outsider like Goerges, even Benesova or she could've been dumped out already. I hope this doesn't turn out like the USO, Clijsters playing very mediorce tennis and still winning the tournament.

If Makarova plays well and is not too tired, Clijsters could be with one foot out of the tournament IMO. Question is if she can raise her level when it matters.

Yep. It's how Mauresmo was able to turn the tide against Clijsters and why Kim doesn't win on clay.

When Mauresmo and Justine get in trouble against Kim, they just slow everything down. Give her a mixture of slices and loopers and drag her level down.

Corswandt
Jan 22nd, 2011, 06:38 PM
Ick.

Kimberley sloppy and unfocused throughout. Her game has already experienced several mini-breakdowns at this AO already, and you really have to think that a complete one, like in the Sydney final, will happen eventually. Let's just hope it's not in the final against You-Know-Who.

Prime Cornet's game was an odd hybrid between flat out pusher and wily counterpuncher. Nowadays it's simpler - she seems to be more one-dimensional and even less flairsome - but still a hybrid, only between defensive and aggressive high % baseline grinding. Something she may or may not consistently pull off - she's very fit, and underrated in terms of her natural athleticism (all the more so considering she's an ethnic Mediterranean), but this sort of game is extremely demanding in physical terms.

I suppose her serve was the anchor she used to salvage what remained of her game. Her service motion is superb, making full use of her legs as a spring to get a good extension, and she can both win a few free points off her 1st serve here and there and hit a decent, if not good, 2nd serve for the standards of her ranking range. But her loopy FH remains a colossal liability, particularly on ROS, and it also misfired (badly) whenever she needed to use it for apparently easy midcourt putaways. Her BH slices sucked, and this goes a way towards explaining why she still prefers a low % (and godawful) drive BH when forced out wide on that side.

Looks like Cornet was in less destruction mode then usual and not that hard on herself. She might have thought this was end of the road for her already and once she saw Clijsters was having an iffy day, then started believing in actually pulling off the upset. But once she lost the first set, you've sensed it will be over in two. Nonetherless that was probably the least irritating performance from Cornet I saw for the best part of two years but Clijsters really dragged her onto the game by making nearly twice as many UE.
