a great match, lots of good tennis especially from Zvonareva :worship:

Safarova was such a fighter and BTW I think it is a good call from Alison Lang

Women's tennis at its best :)

I like Vera a lot but as a #2, you should have the confidence to do much more than pushing the ball in the T.

Nice pushing from Vera :help: She totally refused to even try to hit a winner in that 2nd set. Glad she won though.

And once again she kissed her opponent at the net

from being in total control and moving Lucie about, should have won the 2nd 6-2 with chances she had at start of set
Vera got passive and started to push more and more and let Lucie in
still Vera should have served it out if not 1st time, then 2nd time.

got away with a 3rd set here Bepa PHEW :smash:

FUCKYEAH  The level of some rallies in TB reached the all-time level easily :worship:

And I'm glad I'm not a Safarova fan - she wasn't even that brainless most of a time, but if she had just looked what's going on there (esp. at 5-4) at the other side of the court, she would make it SO much easier for herself. Too bad.

Epic tiebreak! Glad Vera prevailed.

Alison Lang rocks :rocker: That overrule she made at 5-5, 0-0... just wow.

Urgh, this was awful from Vera. So passive! She practically crawled over the line.

 At the looks Sergey was getting, he's in for some shit now!

 Lucie, she played much better at the end.

Vera's definitely going to have to step it up!

Lucie couldn't handle Vera's moonballing :o No one can, though. That's why she wins so many matches.

This. It is strange when one player's outcome depends on the other's errors.
Nonetheless, solid match from Vera.

Very tough match and so close with the Hawkeye call in the penultimate point and Alison Lang saying Lucie had no play on the ball.

Story of Lucies career really.

True, but I have more faith than I used to in Lucie as a consistent player instead of a purely streaky one.

She can still go from brilliant to tragic in the course of two points, but she has definitely improved aspects of her game.

It was her serve that let her down today, though obviously she was going for more on it.

Some terrific points, and a crazy tiebreak.

Jan 22nd, 2011, 01:18 AM
I just saw the final tie-break, and BOY IT WAS WORTH IT. :worship:

With Zvonareva, I am unimpressed yet very impressed. Her game is still rusty, and her movement too, I especially hated her horrible pushing towards the end, but still, she defended amazingly and she looked so calm and composed even when Lucie saved all those match points.  I thought she would go crazy when Lang told her the ball was called out, but she stayed calm and just said she wanted to challenge. :)

Lucie... She's never looked better. her shots and serve lacked a bit of pop, but she fought great as usual. If only she had a reliable backhand, she would be so much higher ranked.

Death by moonballs :sobbing:

Lucie is such a frustrating player to support. She will forever remain a top 35 player unless she learns how to play percentage tennis. She played much better in the latter stages of the match though.

Great match though. Vera's going to be hard to beat with that crazy defensive game.

what a tie-break!!:bounce::hearts:wonderful!

Lucie:hug:today if you would be a little bit focused, for Bepa would have been very difficult to win...but...

Bepa:ohow can she be n.2:confused:why WTA functioning in this way?
today she has ONLY played defending, and put on the other side of the net the ball...I think and hope she will be beated in OT or QF...

Very enjoyable, high quality second set. :yeah: Vera's point by point focus :yeah: Old Vera would've cracked under this pressure. Speed and anticipation goes without saying, is incredible. So many times Safarova was in winning positions but ultimately pressed. When Vera turns defense into offense, it's beautiful to watch. Fitting the match ended due to Vera's defense.

Lucie fought so well and really played a great second set.

Nice match by both, Lucie was so good in second set, she was blasting winners (24 ) and Vera's defense was superb. In the tiebreak Lucie deserved to win, she kinda distracted after that line call.
I wanted a third set at that level. :p

Lucie missed way too many "gimmies" in the match but failing to put away the volley down match point was just awful.

Saying that, the worst part of the match was Allison Lang telling Vera, "the linesman called the ball out" without Vera even asking. Um, bitch, you are the umpire. If you think the call was missed, overrule the fucking call. Don't force a player to use a challenge b/c you are too much of a pussy. It was fucked. She overruled on other points in the match. Why was that point in the TB different?

Wonder if Alison is still getting used to her new glasses! You'd think she had a pretty good view of that line.

Well done Bepa!
Unlike Lucie she was able to employ different tactics when her pacy shots percentage dropped, throwing in some moonballs and slices. And it wasn't possible for Bepa to always hit hard considering the way Lucie played. Should have used more low-bouncing slices though as they seemed to provoke more errors from Lucie.

BepaMaria
Jan 22nd, 2011, 01:29 AM
Too much pushing by Bepa in this match. She would have lost if the match went to a 3rd, so luckily she won that tense breaker and took it in straights.

Wow! Really impressed with Vera, great play with nice variety: loopers, great drives, excellent serves and volleys. Slice is something of a floater but it still gives her openings in rallies. She was clever in seeing that Lucie was belting the ball towards the end, so mixed up the pace and defended magnificently. I think I have a new fave for the title. Hopefully she keeps it together.

no .. Vera hit the ball and she thought it was a winner, but it was called out. Vera didn't hear the linesman saying 'out' so she thought she had the point. Alison Lang said '10-9 (9-8 or whatever) Safarova'. Vera turned around shocked, and Alison Lang said the ball was out, as it was the original call from the linesman.

Petkorazzi
Jan 22nd, 2011, 02:06 AM
Indeed. Vera fistpumped after that point, and just walked to get ready for the next point, she had not heard the linesman call it out.

So mad at Martina being forced to Americanize Lucie's name. God help someone wanting to teach people how to prounounce names correctly. :o

Vera is not long for this tournament with that passive play. It was smart against Queen Bojana and she got away with it against Lucie but someone is going to make her pay sooner or later.

Annoyed at Vera being so passive at important stages of the match today, really left that second set in Lucie's hands....but holy shit her defense is incredible. Seriously, she has gotten even faser over the break because she is getting back balls that she really shouldn't.

Keep it up Vera :) Gotten through some tough matches this tournament.

Watching Pennetta-Peer right now, it's a shame someone had to lose this match.

It's true that Vera's defense has gotten even sharper, she turned one backhand save into a winner in a way that reminded me of Nadal.
