I would say Caro is faster, but Vera has better anticipation.

wozniacki by far

Gotta say that Zvonareva is playing some awesome defense in her match against Safarova. She's moving with Clijsters-like speed and retrieving balls other players could only dream of retrieving.

Zvonareva.

Wozniacki has good defence of course but it doesn't look very fluid like JJ, Zvonareva etc.

Vera Zvonareva is a joke as a world no.2. Kim movements is 101 times better than her.

She cant hold her serve right now against Lucie safarova, hope Vera lose in his match, cant wait to see her cry again. she cry when she lost, thats why i cant stand her.

Wozniacki's entire game is improvisation.

Her defense vs Sharapova beats Vera

Tough call. I think it is more fun to watch Vera, but I could be biased.

Wozniacki. Bepa is better at turning defense into attack. Caro just... pushes it back.

This. Please don't compare Zvonareva's defense / movement to Kim :o It's an insult...

Wozniacki. She's not winning matches based on offense. :o

I have to agree with this. I think Caro defends better, but she does it really ugly. Zvonareva's movement is very fluid, and also as mentioned, she improvises very well.

I think Wozniacki is faster and gets to more balls (and looks more natural doing it), but Vera does more once she gets to balls, like awkward slices and hitting down the line.

it's ridiculous as Caro and Bepa are n.1 and n.2 in the world now:o...tenis is a sport, and as all the other sports the player should be able to win with own winner shots and fatigue, with a logic, a strategy, a plan to prevail against the other...not only by defense and waiting for other errors...it's disgusting seeing them playing...:help:

Zvonareva anticipated to be aggressive. She hits balls on the run very flat or slice up if out of reach. She has improved her defensive game especially post-Coco match because she learns not to force shots.

Wozniacki is faster and cover the court very well she can get behind lots of ball and likes to moonball, not offensive but effective and cause less errors.

Zvonareva's defense in this tournament has been remarkable, unthinkable.

They're both great at defense, almost equally. I'd give the slight edge to Wozniacki because her game does rely on it much more than Vera's. But I prefer Vera's hack and sliced shots on the stretch.

This sounds right to me. She doesn't get the balls back into play with any nice looking shots. She just always get them back in play.

All she can really do effectively is throw the ball up in the air...don't get me started on that ugly two-handed slice.

The difference between the two players is that sometimes Zvonaryova gets too defensive, to the point of being detrimental to her game and her abilities. It IS Wozniacki's game, and although it is unwatchable, she has mastered it to perfection.

I'd say that Vera is capable of getting more balls back in play. But Caro is better overall because seems to get the ball back to the perfect spot on the court to make the opposition as uncomfortable as possible.

But watching Vera's last two matches is starting to sway my opinion, she has been running so many balls down that I had no idea it was possible to get to.

Interesting debate.

Wozniacki has more potential to retrieve more laterally, but Zvonareva has great racquethead control that allows her to hit nimble lobs, diffusing slices, and other shots while defending.

I'd still probably give it to Wozniacki on the fact that her shots have more net clearance.

I think Wozniacki is better at keeping herself in the rally and returning balls while Zvonareva is better at going from defence to attack.

JJ's Defending qualities at its best were not comparable to any other player.

For Today I think Kim has the better defensive qualities. From these two Vera :)

Vera certainly does it in a prettier fashion. Woz is better though, but what no one has mentioned yet is the seemingly large gulf between the two in mental strength, even when you factor in how much Vera improved in this area. Caroline just has this natural confidence which suits this style of play to a tee, and has been a major contributing factor to what she's achieved so far, imo. She knows she can run pretty much anyone down, unless of course they have a Kvitova day.

Pushniacki is hopeless against any in-form ballbasher, while Vera at least has counterpunching abilities to go for her. Vera wins here on her defensive variety

I remember Bartoli-Vera match in AO 2009 when Vera made a delicious backhand slice on the stretch which curved and landed down the line. One of the most beautiful shots in tennis I have seen.

I would say Caroline is slightly better as a pusher defender but Vera's game is more balanced and beautiful to watch.

Zvonareva is better at defending (as in, even if the ballbasher is on her game, Vera still has a chance to win, unlike Wozniacki).Sadly she can leak errors when trying to put players in more awkward positions; she also has a better variety of shots which she can use to defend with.

Wozniacki is better at keeping her errors to minimum without going for too much while defending since she has a more defensive court positioning. She has a typical pattern and any ballbasher on her game can take her out (but the BB will also lose much more easily if not on her game).

vera defends in a more traditional way of slicing and chipping balls back when on the dead run, this at least puts some different spin on the ball and makes it more awkward to stay ontop of the point.

woz always uses topspin when defending, thus if a player is 'on' those balls don't pose much trouble. vera's defending is more effective but more high risk if that makes sense

I actually get the feeling that Zvonareva is faster.

Anyway, Zvonareva's defending was IMPECCABLE against Lucie yesterday. She got the most impossible attacking shots back, almost ludacris. She was running 3 marathons in those last few games against Lucie and still didn't look tired.

For me it's very close but I think you make a great point and for the above reason I give Vera a slight edge. Vera did look pretty lost against Serena and Kim in her two slam finals but I think that had more to do with the occasion rather than the way they played.

Unfortunately as we saw at the YEC in the Wozniacki/Stosur match Caroline is still vulnerable to a big server that is having an "on" day. On the positive side for Caroline she is still fairly young and has time to get better but for right now I think Vera is, overall, better at defense.

I know that a lot of people would disagree with me but I think the fact that they are both great defenders makes their matches interesting and I enjoyed their matches in 2010 and I wouldn't mind seeing them meet in a slam final.

I dont think Vera is faster. I think Vera has more variety. She'll slice, lob, topspin, try to mix it up more.
But defense isnt a stroke, like serve or forehand. Its combined with mental toughness even more than a shot.
Vera will be effective with her defense moreso if she's not in a big final. Caro will give you her good defense regardless of pressure.
