He seemed appalled at the idea of him even watching women's tennis.:haha: I tend to believe this is the attitude of most ATP players in general. They cannot stand women's tennis at all. :tape:

To be honest, Ferreira was never a top 5 player or a Slam finalist, so it would be more 'logical' that less people know him than Zvonareva. :p

I guess he just doesn't watch women's tennis. At all.

Wayne Ferreira seriously Wayne Ferreira.

How could he not know them, his greatest achievement was being in a million grand slams, did he do any good? No.

I am sure the majority of ATP players know the majority of WTA players, the good ones at least.

I mean Roger Federer said Kuzzy was his favorite player.

He shouldn't be commenting anything about WTA matches if he doesn't know Vera or Lucie. That means he doesn't watch it ever at all.

In his defence, he says he hardly watches even men's tennis since retirement.

He said that but then he also knows who Garcia-Lopez is...I wouldn't expect someone who hardly watches men's tennis to know him and especially not his game. He HAS to know who Zvonareva is, there's just no possible way he doesn't.

Although he lost all credibility anyway when he said Murray was the most exciting player to watch nowadays.

Lot's of misfired smart-ass comments in this thread. This is just a 51 year old bloke admitting he doesn't follow women's tennis. He only follows men's tennis a little, and probably only because he feels oblidged to do so. He reitred decades ago.

With this in mind I have absolutely no idea why he is being interviewed in front of the cameras at all.

He only follows men's tennis a little, and probably only because he feels oblidged to do so. He reitred decades ago.He is only 39. Although he lost all credibility anyway when he said Murray was the most exciting player to watch nowadays.I don't think he knows who Garcia-Lopez is. (Or maybe he hit with him at some point back in their playing days?) Seems like he only said that because he was embarrassed by his own lack of knowledge of the game and was eager that he could actually answer a question ... "finally a match I can talk about! I know Murray! Who cares who he's playing, he'll probably win!"

I think Andy is quite exciting to watch! :o

The poor bloke was put on the spot and gave an honest answer. He does not say that it is their fault for him not knowing who they are. There are certain players that I would struggle to recognise in person. Radwanska for one, some people are just not especially memorable. Only the unusual looking players tend to be. (perhaps why Gingers such as Guccione tend to have such a cult following)

A Magicman
Jan 21st, 2011, 06:49 PM
Most people bemoaning that Ferreira doesnt know who Safarova and Zvonareva are obviously have no clue either who Wayne Ferreira is.

Betten

Just because he doesn't know a relatively obscure player like Safarova is no reason to bitch on him. And it's not as if those finals Vera Zvonareva played in were memorable . If you don't really follow tennis (anymore) then there's no shame in not knowing these players.

First, they misspelled his name. Second, he knows Guillermo Garcia-Lopez and yet he doesn't know Vera Zvonareva? Maybe he played GGL back in the day. Three, I never liked the Wayne, especially when he beat Sampras. Four, Wayne doesn't look that much different than back in the day. Good for him. It might be too much for any casual nonfan to know Lucie Safarova.

Well let's face it most people who don't follow tennis on the regular probably only know the famous personalities like Venus, Serena, Maria, Kim, Justine, Ana and maybe even Wozniacki now. The same goes for the atp tour. Few players get crossover recognition whether we like it or not.

Martina and Anna predicted this.

Q. Could you both analyze the state of women's tennis right now, the popularity of the game, what you think it's lacking maybe.

ANNA KOURNIKOVA: I think that right now there's still those amazing names: the Williams girls, Henin, Clijsters. Thank God they came back. I just think, to me personally from the outside, it looks like there's not that many household names besides those really four girls, plus Sharapova.

MARTINA HINGIS: It's quickly changing.

ANNA KOURNIKOVA: A true tennis fan, he will know who Jankovic is, Wozniacki, people that are between 5 and 10.

MARTINA HINGIS: Even Ivanovic.

GoofyDuck

To be honest, Ferreira was never a top 5 player or a Slam finalist, so it would be more 'logical' that less people know him than Zvonareva.Maybe in the future but so far No, it's not logical. Ferreira is more famous than Vera cuz he has had a longer and steadier topflight career.

Bepa was a bit player in the world of tennis until last year.

Safarova is, relatively speaking, a nobody

All I remember about him are his freckles. And how I always get confused with the scores when he's playing Ferrero because ESPN would always shorten their names as "FER."

But yeah, no one really knows who Zvonareva and Safarova are besides close followers of tennis. Casual tennis fans might recognize Zvonareva's face, but not her name. "Oh, the girl who got beaten by Serena at Wimbledon last year?"

Sally Todd
Jan 22nd, 2011, 01:31 AM
Wozniacki does it

It's all in the eye of the beholder -- a player doesn't push if you like them.

You like Vera who just pushed and moonballed like hell against Lucie! But when you called the match in the result thread you act as if Vera utterly controlled things and give no credit to Lucie when she was blasting winners all over the place.

Djokovic a pusher  Nadal pushes in comparison to a Federer who is Shankerer, but he bullies and beats the ass of most of the ATP. People who don't like him talk about him as if it's 2005.

Clijsters-Cornet wasn't pretty, but big serves are padding their stats. Not only the aces, but easy follow-ups on weak returns. Isner had a clear sub-1 W/UE ratio for the entire match if you take that into account.
