Pathetic crowd booing Venus out of the court. Are they fucking blind that they can't see that she could barely walk, let alone play tennis? If there's someone who always try as hard as possible to play while injured, that player is Venus. Ridiculous crowd.

I really feel for Venus. Seems like every year, when she comes to Australia, she has the worst of luck and it's obvious in my opinion, it's just not meant for her to win Australia. I certainly hope she gets better, because she doesn't deserve this, especially towards the end of her career.

I was looking forward to this match, too bad it has to end this way.

You could clearly see even from Vee's answer to the pre-match interview to the injury question that it wasn't healed at all.

She went out there, tried, and just clearly couldn't move and was limping. Petkovic came out firing, which didn't help either.

I thought that Venus walked on to the court looking okay (not great), but she was not moving ideally into the first game. I don't think she reached for her leg until the next game. She had her right upper thigh heavily wrapped, but I guess there wasn't anything else she could do. I believe that she did scream loudly after the 2nd point of the 2nd game, and then she soon walked off court to her bench. Soon after that she called for a trainer, but she was ready to retire after only a few more minutes. (I guess the trainer couldn't provide any substantial options.)

Hopefully, both Williams sisters will pull back a bit and just do moderate training and therapy. I hope that they both can come back to the tour okay, but I guess that they're both on indefinite hiatus.

Whatever their respective futures are, I hope that they both get well soon!

Venus is such a true champion. You could see the will & desire in her eyes but her body was not able. I don't recall ever seeing Oracene look that upset, you could really see the concern and hurt she feels for her child. This has truly been a sad day for tennis because Venus was a threat in this tournament and she was beaten by an injury. I am so sad right now.:sad::bigcry::bigcry::bigcry:

As for the crowd, they are a bunch of losers. They have no care or compassion for these players lives. They act like the players are machines and are never affected by injury. I would like to tell those bi@%$#$#^$^$%^$*%$&*s a thing or 2.

The booing was more an act of disappointment for getting one game in the women's match after the men's match had already been highly uncompetitive, not to be mean, racist or whatever towards Venus. After having paid a big price for just these two matches.

Organizers should've just scheduled another match in that spot (Kuznetsova-Henin or Sharapova- Görges probably), as everyone knew that Venus was hurt and unlikely to compete.

Sad to see Vee retire in this match. It's hard to not think about the Williams sisters retiring soon with all these injuries. But Venus has said many times that she is not even thinking about retirement any time soon. Only positive thing I can take away from this is that Venus can play without much prep (I know they both can do that). Venus was so rusty in the early rounds before but her experience really helps her pull through. She played decent tennis to get to the USO semis last year and could have made it deep into the AO if it was not for the injury. Anyhow, I'm actually rooting for Sharapova to make it through to the finals. If she can clean up her serve, I think she can beat Kim (who is hitting the ball exceptionally well). Kim is moving and hitting well, so it is hard to see anyone beating her at this tourney.

I understand that Venus does not want to retire yet, but she has to start looking at reality at this point. She's not a senior citizen, but she starting to get old for the tennis world at this point so its going to be hard to stay healthy. I think she can win 1 or 2 more on her way out. (i'm praying for more) but the injuries are going to continue to come. She was smart to pull out though, hope she heals well. I want my girls to come back strong and ready to beat up on some girls at the next slam.

wtf is this, why even bothering stepping on court˛

I'm still trying to figure out that. What on earth is the point of playing one single game. Doesn't she have a doctor/physio?

This coupled with that dress-controversy gives me the impression that Venus is surrounded not by dedicated professionals but by groupies who are just fawning over her and never ever dare to tell her "no Venus, don't do that"

Actually Venus is going to do what she wants to do regardless of what other people say! She knows her body better than anyone else and, as a result, felt she could win todays match or at least try to (in hope adrenaline would kick to minmise the pain as indicated in her press conference).

There's nothing worse than exiting a slam without at least trying. And Venus did that. So she has no regrets.

And I'm sure anyone in her position would do the same! At least try. But there's no pleasing some people. I would bet my bottom dollar that if she had just withdrawn from the tournament, prior to the match, people would be dogging her for not trying.

Thats not good enough to people who paid good money to watch this match. Most people don't personally care for the player but are more interested in the match... particularly those who watch on RLA and Hisense. The die-hard fan go to outside courts.

Well, back to my point, how is that Venus' fault?

It's the tournament organisers fault that they decided to put such a "vulnerable" match in a marquee slot! Not Venus'. Can you not take that in? Or is your lack of intellectual ability really holding you back that much?

EDIT: Anyway, I see that you've edited your post. And you, like many, obviously didnt watch the match. You obviously knew about Venus' injury and then saw that she retired from the match and made an assumption (a wrong one). The fact of the matter is, Venus wanted to try but unfortunately reinjured herself in the match today and so had to retire. I don't see what's so difficult to understand.

Furthermore, it's quite obvious your disdain for Venus is clouding your judgement. So I'll leave it at that. You believe what you want to believe.

Having said that, each time a player retires after 1 game or 2, there's ALWAYS some people who boo. Like... ALWAYS. This is something all players should expect. Really Venus shouldn't have gone on court. On the last point she played before retiring, she screamed and bent over like she was in severe pain. I don't think we'll see her back for at least a month or so. I'm not a fan but it really isn't nice to see a player in that kind of pain.

A close friend of mine actually flew down to Melbourne today, from Sydney, with his girlfriend to see the tennis. They had tickets for the RLA night matches today and also for tomorrow. I just spoke with him and he was telling me how disappointing it was that he only got to see one match tonight. He had spent a lot of money on flights and accommodation and had this trip booked for a while. So while I do not in anyway condone the booing and think it was uncalled for, I can certainly understand why some people may have been booing.

The scheduling could have been a lot better, though I guess Venus purposely requested to go on as late as possible to have enough time to recover after the injury. They could of at least put her and Andrea in the night matches on Hisense Arena just as a precaution or even last in the Hisense Arena day session. The crowd get to see so many other matches during the day so a retirement wouldn't have been as badly received as with a night match where they are expecting to see two high-profile matches.

The booing was coming from the morons who go to the tennis simply to consume their own body weight in alcohol..... The night sessions at the AO are notorious for rowdy and rude crowds. I am happy to say no one sitting near me booed but how embarrassing for Australia. The fans were riled up because of Monfils pathetic display but what a disgrace! A regular tennis fan knows that a player can get injured at any point and retire.

I'm not gonna fucking boo a person when that person is obviously upset and in pain, that's just low, I wouldn't even do that to the players that I hate.

Her unwillingness to give up without at least giving it a try is admirable in a way, but also not very reasonable. She *must* have realized beforehand that there was no way she'd be able to play a complete match if she could barely run without feeling severe pain. Had she given Petkovic a walkover, the officials could have scheduled another match on Laver instead of one that lasted only a few points. Even so, the crowd's reaction was uncalled for.

Wow. I'm not the biggest Venus fan but this was just...wow. No one else woiuld have been treated this way. No one. Not Vika, Sharapova or any of the other screamers. They would have been applauded for making the attempt. Naive of me, but I didn't expect this in Australia. Not a shock though that there are so many people not willing to face the truth and defending this nonsense. Wish Venus a speedy and full recovery.

So what exactly is the truth? Aussies are prejudiced towards blacks?
Was the crowd that was mimicking Sharapova's squeals racist towards Russians?

A close friend of mine actually flew down to Melbourne today, from Sydney, with his girlfriend to see the tennis. They had tickets for the RLA night matches today and also for tomorrow. I just spoke with him and he was telling me how disappointing it was that he only got to see one match tonight. He had spent a lot of money on flights and accommodation and had this trip booked for a while. So while I do not in anyway condone the booing and think it was uncalled for, their I can certainly understand why some people may have been booing.

This, thank you.

I obviously can't condone their booing but I would have definitely been disappointed as well.

She said she felt no pain yesterday but then re-aggravated it. She didn't specify whether she re-aggravated it in the match or before. She looked fine during the warm-up. :wavey:
Look, they only played a handful of points before she had to retire. Injuries don't magically go away. I wasn't paying too much attention to the warm-up, but IIRC she was walking rather gingerly when she stepped onto the court, perhaps even limping a bit. I'm not criticizing her, but a few practice rallies before the match should have been enough to realize that she was in no shape to play.

This is what I was talking about. Make of it what you will, but I believe that she thought she could play a match. She looked genuinely disappointed as the physio was telling her she couldn't play. I don't think it's fair to criticise her for making an effort.

Q. Does it hurt a lot when you're just walking around the hotel or up and downstairs or anything like that?

VENUS WILLIAMS: My last match it just hurt walking around between points. I was able to calm down from yesterday to today to where I could pretty much walk without pain. After aggravating it today I'm not as comfortable now.

Q. Were you kind of hoping for a miracle, that you could get out there and the adrenaline will get going and you would be able to move? Because it wasn't just about tonight. Did you really think it would heal enough where you could play at a decent level?

VENUS WILLIAMS: Yeah, of course that's in the back of my mind. It's tough to come into a match not knowing if what level you can give. Normally you go into a match and you're already focused anyway, and it's hard to focus on so many other things outside of just the game.

So that was hard. Then to think about if I could last five more matches like that and what the future was. So it was really just one match at a time. Hey, can I make it one more match? Obviously I just couldn't.

What a shame. Tough break for Venus, but I know she can rally back after this injury.

Australian crowd :o

I get why they were disappointed, but really? In this case, I am booing the schedulers. We all had a pretty good idea that Venus was injured and even if she could play this match, she would not be 100% and Andrea could easily take advantage. This should have been on court 2 during the day.

Venus  I guess it is the curse of playing Andrea in the 3rd round of a slam (Peng withrew from the USO last year).

Good luck against Maria, Petkorazzi. :yeah:

Life isn't fair. Obviously some members of the crowd didn't care the reasoning and were upset that they weren't getting to see a match hence the boos. Venus is still going to do her.
Not sure why people are fussing about it here. Not everyone likes Venus.

Awww Venus get well soon. Nice exchange at the net.

The booing was crass. Again people think that they have some sort of ownership over these athletes. Venus was visibly injured. Venus had nothing to do the general suckitude of Monfils, and to even suggest that someone who has never retired from a major should give a walk over is crazy. She gave it a try it didn't go her way.

Anyways, good luck to Petkovic next round!

Venus' latter stages of her career are cycling into 2-3 weeks of relative good health followed by 2-3 months of injuries.

Her last 4 tournaments are all slam tournaments due to injury and who knows when she will be back at her level on court. She has a lot to defend early on. I believe the most of any player before Roland Garros.

Seriously! This has nothing to do with liking a player. It's about respecting a champion who came out to give her best effort and couln't. Would they have felt better if she just stood in one place and let the balls fly past her until the score was 60 60? Please!

Some people paid big money to see tennis, they're pissed off and boo for 10 seconds. WTH is the big deal? From a logical point of view, does it make sense to boo? No, it doesn't. But people are often irrational in a crowd, after a beer or 2.

Playing 1 game is giving your best effort?
Playing with a groin injury is stupid to me but what do I know.
Groin injuries don't heal in 2 days. I'm surprised Venus thought she was actually going to be able to play.
There is another alternative to your ludicrous suggestion:
Withdraw from the tournament and allow another match to be scheduled so people can actually watch a complete match.

For the record guys, the booing wasn't that bad at all.

It was the standard booing for any player who retires after one game.

The crowd still cheered for Venus as Venus was waving to them as she walked off.

There is no justification whatsoever for booing a player so cleary in pain, especially with Vee's record of never retiring in a Slam match before.

Sad outcome. Venus's face looked so sad when she realized she couldn't do it. Also, she was so nice giving Petkovic a hug. However, if the Australian commentators comment on the obnoxious booing and how inappropriate it is, well, I'm not going to disagree with them. Very disappointing. Sorry Fed Cup team.

No need to be abusive! I get your point and I can't understand that decision either... may have something to do with the organisers trying to do the right thing and give Vee more time for the injury. She may of requested a night match, we really don't know. It doesn't alter the crowds perception that they have just wasted $90 however.

Remember they are NOT die hard Venus fans like you rather general tennis fans. For me it is not about being a die hard fan or not. No one should boo a person when they are down & obviously in pain. That is a very vile thing to do. There are a few players I literally cannot stand but I would never boo them in a situation like this even if I paid 1000.00 dollars. I would be disappointed yes but why would I take it out on a suffering human being?

Not to mention the fact that I am more than sure these people will get the chance to see another match based on already paying for this session. I am more than sure the tournament is working with these people. It just goes to show that so often people are jerks first then human beings.
