C'mon!

Miserable first set, but got much better in the 2nd!:worship:

Some great serving and fight! from her after 2-2 in the 2nd set. Really pulled herself together and elevated her level of play to win that set and eventually the match. :worship:

Little loss of focus in the 3rd, but overall a good performance today! :yeah:

Venus or Petko next!

Julia. Too bad (for her) that she couldn't keep her level of the first set up. Better luck next time. :)

I didn't even know who Maria was in the first set - 4 winners?!

She turned it around and played some good tennis. Goerges played well, she'll be a threat in the future.

Once she started playing the slight CC angle and placing the next shot DTL, she sent overrated and annoying Julia right out of Melbourne.

Julia was utter shit for the first 4 games of the third while Maria was raising her game to much higher levels, and that deficit was too much for her to recover from  Still, good learning experience for her and I'm sure she'll reach a fourth round at a Slam very soon :cheer:

I can't believe that Goerges girl was outhitting Pova on many points. She was also redirecting balls really good. But she was pretty much helpless when Sharapova goes on overdrive.

Let's go Masha!!!

Jan 21st, 2011, 07:09 AM
Got to agree with that commentator. That was a battle royal. Maria's serve was so off in the first set, and then in the third Julia came back. I almost thought she was going to get back on serve. No matter. It was enjoyable, even with all the errors.

What a tremendous slugfest, such hard hitting from both. After a mediocre and rather stiff first set, Maria really raised her level and played great tennis in those last two sets, so pleased! 7 aces, 35 winners, 29 UEs.

I think she'll beat anybody on this side of the draw except for maybe Wozniacki. Caro has high topspin balls, some she can hit really heavy, which will really test that shoulder of Maria. Sharapova would have to serve magnificently. Any long rallies and she doesn't have much of a chance.

Exactly she is so overrated. There's a reason she is ranked where she is.

When Maria got out of hitting only 4 winners in the first set and started mounting actual resistance off the ground, Julia was done for. Sharapova played only average and still beat a hot Julia.

That said, all credit to both players; it was a great match. Both had rough patches but by the end were giving it a thorough go. Loved it.

Best I've seen Sharapova strike the ball since her 09 French Open run. But yeah, it was a really, really high quality match, and Maria showed that she is the best competitor in the draw. Some great serving in the last set and a half (the body serve was particularly effective) and if she can keep that up, she will go FAR.

So thrilled! What a match! And credit to Goerges who played way above her level and didn't go away. Bright future ahead of her for sure.

I think everyone can agree we all thought Georges was going to make it on the WTA tour. She DOMINATED in juniors! And she has way less unforced errors than many players like Sharapova.
I think with propper training, there's little room for distance in her success.

As Anastasia Myskina said..."She's a real, real fighter!"

you seem to be a bit slow as far as I can tell - there would no long rallies with the way Julia was hitting the ball, but a simple route to the win against any pusher. Pushniacki can thank gods she didn't have to face Goerges today (like all the other players too).

Point is - Julia doesn't do long rallies well... hell she was outlasted by Pova today when they had long rallies. When Pova plays someone who *can* do long rallies we'll see what her level is like

Pushniacki can thank gods she didn't have to face Goerges today (like all the other players too).

You have no idea what would have happened had she played Pushniacki... she doesn't play the same kind of flat power hitting like Sharapova... and she would have given Goerges deep balls with spin. Different gamestyle altogether.

I'm not a claycourter. Just because I think talking about people's "tits" publically is a bit rude doesn't mean I like playing on clay. In fact I hate clay. Hard is my favorite surface!

Anyway, Maria will probably make a deep run here. I just think if she has to play someone who can make her hit more than 8 balls in a rally she's in real trouble!

you seem to be a bit slow as far as I can tell - there would no long rallies with the way Julia was hitting the ball, but a simple route to the win against any pusher. Pushniacki can thank gods she didn't have to face Goerges today (like all the other players too).

Julia couldn't even beat Wozniacki on a quick indoor court in Copenhagen when she was playing just as well as this match.

Maria Sharapova is a good player, but Georges is just better! Look at her career stats. Maria has way more unforced errors in her career!

I guess it could actually be argued that Maria nearly gave the match away because of all those DFs. Still, I expected a somewhat better performance from her.

I am _very_ mindful of her rotator cuff injury from a few years ago; those situations don't just go away in a year or 2. They're nagging and ongoing injuries based on what little information I've come across indicates, and I expect that Maria will have shoulder issues for some time still into the future. Even withstanding her gradual progress, I would have figured that other parts of her game (aside from her serve) would have been on better display. Her movement wasn't too shabby, so that's encouraging. Also, she had a lot of UEs, but likely more importantly those errors came from pushing the match forward. She's certainly playing a far cry better than when I saw her in person in Los Angeles 2 Summers ago. She actually seems more "together" nowadays. Just based on tonight's performance, I am more inclined to believe that she'll get deep in this tourney (though I'm still not expecting her to even get to the Final.)

I must add that this was quite likely the most entertaining match I've seen so far in this first week of this year's AO. I'm glad that I took breaks from work to tune in since it was well worth it. :lick: If anything, I think several other top players will need to raise _their_ respective games to come up with the goods against Sharapova throughout this year.

Also, I think that this was the first match of Julia's that I've ever watched most of the way through, so I certainly don't have a reference point to use as far as making expectations of her go. WD by both Maria and Julia. :yeah:

Of course it depends on the others performance, and also it's too early to tell if you want an answer based on form as she only just changed coaches but she played very well today in sets 2 and 3 so who knows?

However, if you're asking for likelyhood she'll be top 10 after AO, it is unlikely, as she needs to reach the SF while Li Na and Shahar Peer do not reach past the QF and R4 respectively.

Well talking about Li Na, Maria (if she wins her 4th round match) can beat her and avoid her to get further than QF.
Well, don't know about Shahar's draw actually but I think she's playing Pennetta and to me, the Italian can easily beat her from the 1st round match I saw her play. Really Impressive Falvia.
So, why not for Maria ? :)
But well, It'll be quite hard. And until Roland Garros she has her points from Memphis and Strasoubrg to defend, a 1R loss in Madrid and a 2R loss in Indian Wells.
So, who knows ?

Hard not to be impressed by the way she managed to get back into the match when she was down 0-4. It was looking like the final set might be a complete blowout. Instead, we got a good 20 minutes of spectacular, take-no-prisoner ball-striking. It's pretty unusual to see two players playing this type of tennis so well at the same time. Julia really took it to her opponent, and Maria's reaction was impressive as well (though not entirely unexpected given her past accomplishments). Maria was pretty poor in the first set and early in the second set, but after that she started to look like the player she used to be. Aces on set point AND match point? Who knows, this might turn out to be the match that finally puts the Sharapova express back on track.

It's not about her strokes being powerpuff... it's about her having consistency and being able to keep up in long rallies when she meets someone who can truly move her around and exploit her movement. That said, she is on her way up :scared:

Surprised at Sharapova's serve holding up that well. Goerges really should have put this away in 2, she went down a bit (the serve speed especially) after that long game in the 2nd. She played far better than I've seen her play before, when she was bashing balls without any inhibitions.

Typical bashfest though. Hard, harder, hardest and all that jazz...

Agreed. If that 3rd set had been just a bit tighter, with a couple more deuce games, it would have been a classic for the ages; but the outcome was in doubt only in the sense that we all suspected that Sharapova's serve could still fall completely apart (it didn't). As it was, it was just about the best a match of this type can be. Flawless first strike tennis from both, with Sharapova (successfully) having a go at several 175 km/h+ serves from Julinha. Positive winner to UE ratio for both IIRC, for both 3rd set and full match overall - something you'll never see in an all-pusher match.

And above all, it was the closest we'll ever get to seeing what a Vaidisova vs Sharapova match would have looked like.

Brilliant. As people have said, the last set was pretty great.

One of Maria's biggest problems over the last year has been the fact that she's so inhibited on her strokes. Looked like that was going to continue after set one, but she finally let loose and glimpses of the old Sharapova (off the ground) reemerged. Petkovic is another player she can hopefully use to further gain some rhythm on her strokes. I'm really rooting for Maria, so KILL HER.
