I really have No idea what's happening with the crowd at the Australian Open. For the most we are very fair and subdued but this is crazy. Seriously, we have a reputation for having the best crowd's next to Wimbledon, and now because of a stadium full or ignorant people we will be pulled back down to Roland Garros / Flushing Meadow level. Please don't judge all of us. This should not be happening in crowds anywhere, especially not at Grand Slam level.

What a painful bunch of politically correct geese some posters are here.....

Any crowd and certainly a tv audience will at some point get sick to death of hearing the noise pollution coming from Sharapova and Azarenka's mouths. No wonder they voice it in the stands and top marks to them for doing so. As for the person in the stands with the shut up sharapova sign - there should be more of it.

The Aussie crowds are just fine and they enjoy themselves. It's what makes the tournament fun.

I remember years ago the crowd did it to Monica when she was playing doing it in a fun way, and you know what she turned around and smiled because it was just like a way that the crowd was saying hey we like you and just having fun with you. Maybe this is the case here, you guys arent even in the stadium, not have an idea of the atmosphere there your just watching your little screen and think you know everything. Ive been to the Aus open many times, going for the second week actually, and its a great atmosphere.

I feel like every once in a while, crowds are going to enjoy quirks about players. When I went to the French, everyone was obssesed with Rafa's wedgie and giggled EVERY time around me.

Maria is totally well respected and very well liked in Australia. They warmed up to her after her Serena's beating and then going and redeeming herself against Ivanovic. She's also playing an underdog who is really giving Sharapova a run for her money, and I think Goerges is, if she wins and/or plays her cards right in the future, going to be another Ivanovic type player who gets a lot of crowd support in Australia, no matter what.

That whole "Happy Slam" was always bullshit IMO. There have been ethnically charged fight between the crowds over the years, ridiculous nationalism, and drunken boorish behavior. And now with the Venus incident and having seen Vika and Masha's grunts mocked, it's obvious how awful they are to certain players.

Do I think all Australians are like this? Hell no. I'm just referring to those who attend this Slam and act like idiots, which is a lot of them. And really, if these people are so offended by grunting, give me your tickets. I'll gladly go in their place so they won't have to be victims of "noise pollution."

I reckon a lot of the players would agree with the "Shut up Sharapova" sign. Irregardless of what the posters on here think, the Australian public are paying good money to see these matches and the last thing they want to hear is players shrieking. I don't mind a good grunt, but seriously, it can get out of control.

As for the posters who refered to the whole Serb/Croat fighting, seriously have you not any awareness of a war between those countries? It happens all over the world, not only in Australia. I think cheering in the stands, no matter how loud they get is great if it means no one gets hurt and the players are respected.

And lets remember, tennis is for the fans, not the players; the players are merely the paid entertainers.

Irregardless of what the posters on here think, the Australian public are paying good money to see these matches and the last thing they want to hear is players shrieking. I don't mind a good grunt, but seriously, it can get out of control.

So basically their complaints are self inflicted. No one is forcing them to watch these players play. If they are that offended, why not leave, or get the schedule to see when the grunters are playing and avoid them? Maria, Venus, Vika and other grunters are not going to change their ways any time soon, and the WTA doesn't seem to think this is an actual issue. And really in the grand scheme of things, it isn't.

As for the posters who refered to the whole Serb/Croat fighting, seriously have you not any awareness of a war between those countries? It happens all over the world, not only in Australia. I think cheering in the stands, no matter how loud they get is great if it means no one gets hurt and the players are respected.

I'm aware of the war and the ethnic tensions that result from it. But having watched tennis over the years, it's the Australian Open that generates the majority of these type of fights. It doesn't even happen at the French Open for god's sake! You pretty much have to look at Davis Cup or Fed Cup ties to see anything remotely similar.

And lets remember, tennis is for the fans, not the players; the players are merely the paid entertainers.

Why can't it be for the players and the fans? Why is it just one over the other.

Australia probably has the highest concentration of Serbs and Croats in the world, I mean apart from those countries themselves. So obviously more risk of esculation.

I don't see what any of this is achieving anyway? All most of you are doing now is insulting people which is apparently what you are trying to fight...also all the people that you are aiming this towards don't read this..I don't get what this negative chin-wagging really does?

Also I think people are forgetting that crowds are the core of tennis, if the crowds aren't happy with the grunting maybe something should be done? It isn't only in Australia that grunting gets complaints. Just a thought.

Thats not a good argument. If you pay for something does that give you the right to disrespect people? Thats a really shitty perspective. And tennis is not just for the fans. Without the fans it would have the profile of lawn bowl, but it would stil be very much for the players.

I know I'm being insulting and I'm sorry about doing that. It's just frustrating to see how rude the AO crowd has been this year in particular especially since the players themselves haven't done anything that's unique to what they normally.

Also I think people are forgetting that crowds are the core of tennis, if the crowds aren't happy with the grunting maybe something should be done? It isn't only in Australia that grunting gets complaints. Just a thought.

The ITF, the ones in charge of the Slams, probably know that they can get people to attend in huge numbers regardless of the complaints. Like I said before, if those attending are that offended, then don't go. No one's forcing them.

And this will be my last talk about this topic.

Maybe the issue is the quality of tennis and not the grunting?Monica's case was different. Her high-pitched grunting was a novelty and therefore it was (at least initially) more amusing than annoying. Only later on, as everybody started to copycat her and the average decibel level of a WTA match rose by leaps and bounds did it all became a nuisance (Wimbledon leading the charge)

Yeah but there's different etiquette to different sports. You don't do stuff like that in individual sports whereas its fair game in team sports, especially when theres the whole home//away thing.

Sharapova hit 4 winners (only 2 from the baseline), Wozniacki hit 6 (and got criticised by a pova fan), the set result was dependent on their opponent so its irrelevant. I am just pointing it out.

Jan 21st, 2011, 01:07 PM
What's the problem with all this? Let the crowd do what they would like to do. Tennis players are earning tons of money, so we all and the players shoudn't react like sensitive plants about some things on court.

I understand why the crowd is upset about the screams and shrieks, especially because it is nothing more than tactics in most cases. I have seen Sharapova matches, where she didn't scream for nearly a whole set.

Concerning Serbs/Croats and nationalism in general: In former times we had wars all over the world where people and countries fought each other. Today people live up these feelings as audiences in sports, cheering for their countries. I think that is much better than wars. So there is no need to panic. It won't kill all these tennis players and fans. Calm down!

Everybody should be resistant to this and not act like a sensitive plant.
