View Full Version : Court Problem on Hisense

The sharapova-goerges match hasnt begun because there's a dead spot on the court.

The umpire just threw down the ball on the court and it didn't come back up. It stuck there!
I've never seen that happen before!

Did anyone see how that?

The ball literally didn't bounce.

Apparently when it gets to hot, the court bubbles or something. (according to Nicole Pratt)

Might be out of action for the rest of the tournament.

LOL.
It's not even that hot.
They'll probably just relay it overnight. It shouldn't be that bad. Can't really do anything else

It's the weirdest thing! I can't imagine what sort of surface would cause the ball to stop dead

It's 81 degrees F and not that humid. A New York Summer routinely enters the 90s and is even more humid.

If the court is so hot and sticky that the ball doesn't bounce, then it's dangerous for players to try to move on it.
They need to close the roof or something.

Apparently there was an air pocket under the court surface, so they just got a drill and popped the bubble.

moby
Jan 21st, 2011, 03:56 AM
Apparently there was an air pocket under the court surface, so they just got a drill and popped the bubble.Interesting. But this still means that the bounce of the courts are uneven... seeing as there are probably air pockets of different sizes out there, although most are probably not so big that they would stop the bounce of the ball completely.

edificio
Jan 21st, 2011, 04:05 AM
It was strange. Made the tennis ball seem like some odd substance from an outer galaxy.

What had happened if they hadn't discovered it until play had started and the ball had suddenly dropped dead during a point? A ball has to bounce twice to win a point so technically speaking wouldn't the ball still be in play? My guess is they'd replay the point.

Wintermute
Jan 21st, 2011, 08:03 PM
The match didn't get underway for 20 minutes as umpires and officials debated on how to fix the unusual problem, which was caused from the court heat forcing a flat bubble patch on the plexicushion surface. Sharapova, who won the game, said she first stumbled upon the spot during the coin toss.

"I noticed there was something under my left shoe. I know I have a lot of foam in the heel but I thought they added some padding or something in there,'' the Russian said. "All of a sudden I looked down and there was a pretty big bubble there.''

But the 2008 Open winner said the problem was fixed fast and had no influence on the match.

McKewen said changing weather conditions were believed to be the cause.

"The significant rainfall of recent times, combined with today's warmer weather, is believed to have caused moisture to rise from under the surface, which led to the resultant vapour,'' he said.
