:haha: :haha: :haha: :haha: :haha: :haha:

This was hilarious, actually. Niculescu playing very solid till *5-2 40-15 second set, then hits a second serve that lands before the service box on her own side, and after that she couldnt even serve properly, her serve was as weak as Camille Pin's. :hysteric:
And Francesca, like any other top would, just stepped it up after that DF at 2-5. Women's tennis has gotten very predictable  Always count on these underdogs to choke.

in the first set fran was great, in second was awful, if she plays like in the first set against henin/sveta she has a chance

:bigcry: She couldn't harm her. Too bad she couldn't take her chance (2 SPs :sobbing:) to get that 2nd set (undeserved.. .)

What is with these pathetic handshakes - at least look your opponent in the eye and say well done

Jan 21st, 2011, 02:07 AM
Congrats Fran!

Jan 21st, 2011, 02:13 AM
Monica you silly chocker.

Need to implement some net game, take some chances. She just resorted to defending and placing the ball in the box when she had a chance to win the set.

Oh well, good job getting to the 3rd round :) Great tournament for her.

Well it was a mixed bag for Monica. On one hand I was pleased to see her fight so hard after getting pretty well crushed in the 1st set. And it was remarkable that Monica came so close to winning the 2nd set considering that Monica's unortodox strokes clearly weren't troubling Fran at all. By that I mean that while Francesca made a lot of errors in the 2nd set almost all seemed come for sloppiness and overaggressiveness rather than her finding any difficulty dealing with Monica's spins. That Monica was able to almost take a set against Schiavone despite that is very much to Monica's credit. Yes, Fran made a lot of errors in the set but Monica was hanging in well and not making errors herself and even hitting the occasional outright winner during that set.

I was also very pleased with Monica's body language. Even after being bageled she never looked like she was going to have a trantrum and lose it emotionally at all. That is progress and hopefully that side of Monica is now history.

But the old problems of a weak serve and her mental fragility did eventually catch up with her. Although she never showed it outwardly, which is a good thing, after that double fault on set point Monica did lose momentum pretty drastically. This has been a hallmark of Monica's career and has hindered her progress up the rankings severely. I think she is making progress mentally, infact, but undeniably, there is still work to be done. Likewise that serve will probably never be a strength but she needs to work hard to see to it that it no longer remains such a weakness.

All that said, Monica is now back in the top 70 and with plenty of room for improvement I still expect her to climb higher. Top 50 this year is very realistic and I still believe her best years are 2 to 3 years away as most players over the years with unorthodox games do tend to develop at a slower rate as it takes time to figure out how to best ulitise such skills. Fabrice Santoro, who didn't really hit his stride until his mid twenties is a good example of this.

And yes, well done to Francesca, she showed why she is a class act and a top 10 player with a very professional job. Even though it was an error strewn performance by her she still showed all the racket skills that have make her a great player. I enjoyed a lot of her net play particularly.

an expected clear victory
