Of the top seeds in the 2R, only Jankovic was upset. Which is exactly what most people thought would happen in the earlier poll.

So, onto the 3R, where's the greatest potential for upset?

[1]Wozniacki vs [29]Cibulkova - Wozniacki has looked sharped in Melbourne. She's even been hitting some winners! Cibulkova beat her in the preAO warm-up. Can she repeat the upset?

[2]Zvonareva vs [31]Safarova - Zvonareva fought off Jovanovski and Safarova squeeked by Zakopalova in the last round.

[3]Clijsters vs Cornet - Clijsters has very easily dismissed all opponents so far. Cornet was a pleasant surprise in the last round dispatching Martinez Sanchez.

[4]Williams vs [30]Petkovic - How severe is Williams groin pull from the last round? Petkovic has played like a contender in some sets during the last few weeks. Key point being 'some' sets. Can she finally go deep in a slam?

[5]Stosur vs [25]Kvitova - Stosur has been unchallenged and Kvitova appears to be living up to the hype that began years ago.

[6]Schiavone vs Niculescu - Schiavone's form has been off yet she has managed to pull out hard fought and long matches the last two rounds. Niculescu has made the most of a weak portion of the draw.

[8]Azarenka vs Scheepers - A bit of a dream draw for Azarenka the last two rounds, yet she still was not convincing in the last round. Scheepers has come through two three setters to make her first 3R in Melbourne.

[14]Sharapova vs Goerges - Sharapova kept her double faults in check in the last round. Goerges has eeked out three set wins to advance to the third round. Based on pre-AO form, a Goerges win might not be an upset.

[16]Pavlyuchenkova vs Benesova - Pavlyuchenkova has yet to make her mark in a slam though she definitely has the talent to do so. Benesova has shown excellent form in the last two rounds, easily dispatching Kirilenko yesterday.

If Venus is injured, this could be the upset.
Nadia is always risky. So is post op Sharapova

I could imagine a Stosur-Upset.
Kvitova is playing very well these days and Sam will feel pressure to get into the second week of her home-slam.

My votes are for a Williams and Sharapova upset. But I also think Petkovic and Goerges could easily psyche themselves out of the wins!!
I think Schiavone could easily be in danger against a stronger opponent than Niculescu. We'll see...she must be tired!!

I could imagine a Stosur-Upset.
Kvitova is playing very well these days and Sam will feel pressure to get into the second week of her home-slam.I left this one out. If Petra is on she has a great chance. But playing against the crowd could be pressure for her. Sveta has a chance too.

I think Zvonareva, Venus, and Stosur are the most vurnerable to possible "upsets" in this round at the moment.

My thoughts exactly, I reckon Fran is the most vulnerable top seed, but I just don't see Monica producing the kind of tennis to take her out

Out of the others, Venus is a candidate, especially if the injury she picked up will bother her. Sharapova is always a big question mark these days and even Justine might exit against an inspired Kuznetsova, should the Belgian have an off day. I also hope Simona continues her run, upsetting Aga

IMO, sure bets for R4 are Kimberly and Vika, no way in hell do I see them going out in the next match. Caro, Na, Nastia and Vera should all get safely through as well.

Venus. Sharapova has a good chance too, Goerges has a big serve and forehand that will trouble Maria.

Sharapova and Venus could be in trouble. Tricky matches for them.

I voted for others, namely Radwanska! Simona is in good form and she has the kind of tennis to beat a still struggling Aga! :)

Venus, Maria, and Sam are most likely. Never count out Petrova or Aussie Kim to have WTF losses either.

Venus for sure far ahead everyone and the real upset will be if Andrea looses that match somehow (...) Vera is in danger if Lucie plays brilliance so as Caro Woz to Cibul.

[6]Schiavone vs Niculescu - Schiavone's form has been off yet she has managed to pull out hard fought and long matches the last two rounds. Niculescu has made the most of a weak portion of the draw.

As a matter of fact out of the 32 players to make it to the 3rd round only two, Anastasija Sevastova and Monica Niculescu, did it by defeating not one, but two top 50 players.

In addition, only Kim Clijsters, Flavia Pennetta and Iveta Benesova have dropped fewer games on their way to the 3rd round. Admit it....Monica is playing well. :wavey:

Venus (I dont know if you can call it an upset. After watching Venus's level of play in the first set as well as not knowing her injury status, Petkovic losing will be an upset) and Stosur.

Venus
Pavlyuchenkova
and maybe Schiavone. (she was about to cry in pain from injury in her first 2 matches)

I agree. All the rest of those players are playing reasonably decent. The only big upsets would be if Clijsters or Azarenka lost.

Well, she does have it quite hard after R3.

Not really. Big match choker Li Na followed by any of slumping/poor serving Sharapova, unproven Petkovic, hobbled Venus, or Gorges. Most players would love that draw to the semis.

Wozniacki losing this round or Henin losing to her bitch Kuznetsova would both be huge upsets if either happened.
