Hasn't been able to gain many points to cushion her fall down the rankings.

How long do you think till she gets back to the top 100, top 50, to 20 etc?

The best thing for Dinara is to play 25k's and get her game & confidence back.
She just played Wickmayer, Bartoli & Clijsters this year.
That's all. She needs to play people with her ranking and build confidence

Maximum number of Wild Cards any player may receive into singles WTA Tournaments and Grand Slams during a Tour Year is six (6), with a maximum of three (3) allowed in the Main Draw.

Exceptions

Top 10 Players may receive an unlimited number of Wild Card nominations in singles and/or doubles.

Players who have competed in WTA Tournaments for 10 Tour Years or more (not necessarily consecutively) will be allowed three (3) additional Wild Cards, either in Main Draw or in Qualifying, in both singles and doubles.

Any player who is a past singles champion of a Grand Slam or Premier WTA Championship will be allowed an unlimited number of Singles Main Draw Wild Card nominations.

Well Dinara is not (obviously) currently top 10, nor is she a Grand Slam champion. However she has competed in the main draw of WTA tournaments for 10 years (2002-2011) so it sounds like Dinara will be entitled to 6 main draw WCs and 3 additional qualifying WCs.

Additionally as Dinara has just 120 points to defend between now and the beginning of August there isn't much danger of her ranking dropping any more in the near future and really it can only go up.

I honestly don't think she will even need as many as 6 main draw WCs over the course of the this year, but we will see....

This. She was playing like number 1000 in the world against Clijsters. In fact, being ranked #119 is already a huge bonus for her as she should be ranked between 500-1000. She is nowhere near her previous form while at #1. Those times are history. From my point of view, Safina is done. She can only play ITF tournaments now.

Safina is the female rainer schüttler

1. They both started their carreer on a medicore level (here and then an upset). Both had a consistent ranking, although safina was top 20 and not only top 50

2. They had a big breatkthrough year, with many good wins (schüttler RUP, 4R,4R, $R plus some masters QF and better), Safina 3 RUP at slams plus some premiere titles

3. They were in a huge slump (the slump started before safinas injury)

4. they stuck around no 80 to 100 in the rankings

5. rainer had a little comeback, will safina have one as well?

I assume safine will be rankend between 30 and 50 for the rest of her carreer, don't see her getting back

Barbara Paulus was top 10 at one point too and I dont consider her a top 10 caliber player. With everyone playing their best and fairly balanced draws and luck and health for all the players Safina belongs in a rank somewhere flucuating from #16-#30.

We will see if Safina can ever again achieve her true best level to return to such a ranking though.

Not everyone can assert they have beaten Henin, Serena, Dementieva in the same tounrmanent, to have reached 3 slam finals, to have pushed Henin towards retirement, to have been #1, to have given nightmares to so many players, including the so called fighter goat Sharapova TWICE at RG !

Only for that, she should get some respect !

Clearly she was better than a marginal top 20 at her best, and you can't argue that the computer said she was number 1 based on the formula and her performance during that time. That much is indisputable.

But it's hard to make the case that she was ever the "best player" in the world when at the time she was #1 the following five players were either retired, injured, having babies, or playing so intermittently as to make the rankings irrelevant: Henin, Sharapova, Clijsters, Serena, Venus.

IMO, at her best, during that period, she was probably around the sixth to eighth best tennis player in the world, but she worked hard and capitalized on some opportunity, and when it came, she was ready to seize it, more or less, at least, outside of the slams. But I don't think she would have reached #1, or cracked the top 5, had Pova's shoulder not unraveled, Henin not quit, Clijsters not gone on maternity leave, and the Williamses played more than a handful of tournaments.

Well if every active player was playing their best it is a no brainer Venus, Serena, Sharapova, Henin, Clijsters, Kuznetsova, Jankovic, Ivanovic, and Wozniacki would all be ranked above her. Some would argue she would be ranked higher than every other active player based on achievements. I would say her results at her peak were so unlikely and such a big overachievement for someone of her ability level, even while playing her best that isnt the case. So with everyone playing their best I also believe Stosur, Petrova, Azarenka, Zvonareva, Dementieva, and some others would also be ranked above her most of the time if the variables of luck, health, draws, and chance balanced out evenly. And if we are talking about career best add Date for sure, someone like Date would have easily reached #1 at some point today if she were in her mid 90s form afte rall. Also add Schnyder who at her late 90s level was superior to anything Safina ever showed (the competition in the late 90s was 10 times harder to I dont care about rank comparision, etc...)

C. Drone

The computer is just making easier the calculus.

Technically Safina ranked #1 but saying at her best she is a #1 caliber player (or should be) would be simply retarded, when there are a horde of even current women who playing their best are much better than her at her best. So where you should be able to rank at your best is not your career high ranking in many cases. I understand you are too dumb or too big a Safina fan to realize that though.

Schnyder of 98 was better than Safina ever was easily, speaking tennis wise. She was just playing against a loaded womens field, rather than a field of nobodys with the big guns all retired or injured. Anyone that actually knows tennis (aka not you) knows Safina would have never even cracked the top 10 if she didnt come in at a point of total chaos of womens tennis. Schyder in 98 beat Sanchez Vicario 6-3, 6-0 on clay, beat Steffi Graf the GOAT in straight sets at the U.S Open, led a tour that had Hingis, Graf, Seles, Davenport in titles midway through the year, would Safina ever do those things.

In fact any top 10 player of the 90s is better than Safina. Kimiko Date was a marginal top 10 player in the 90s just like Schnyder and she has won all her matches with Safina at 39 years old. And btw being 39 years old and having been retired 12 years is a bigger disadvantage than even the worst slump unless you physically cant even walk, so Date naturally is even further from her best than Safina is now, yet she is still ranked over her. So no brainer peak Date >>>> Safina or hypothetical peak Date >>>>> peak Safina. And Schnyder at her own peak in the 90s was basically a Date.

So top 20 is pretty much her limit now just as it is Safina's. Everytime Ana these days plays one of the big guns (eg- not Petrova or Bartoli) she gets majorly spanked. The era of the clown #1s who got beat up over and over by the real players couldnt last forever. Safina, Ivanovic, Jankovic, many years from now will represent the funniest era in WTA history.
