Anne Hathaway Cast as Catwoman in 'Dark Knight Rises'
12:32 PM 1/19/2011 by Borys Kit

Anne Hathaway has nabbed the coveted female lead opposite Christian Bale in Christopher Nolan's The Dark Knight Rises.

Warner Bros. made the announcement Wednesday morning.

The studio also revealed which character Tom Hardy, who joined the cast last fall, will play: Bane.

Bane, a man who spent his whole life in prison, was a test subject for a drug that gave him increased strength, although he also became addicted to that drug. As opposed to some of the more classic villains that have populated the Batman movies, Bane is a more recent creation (1993) and is best known for a story where he broke Batman’s back, leaving the hero a paraplegic.

“I am delighted to be working with Tom again and excited to watch him bring to life our new interpretation of one of Batman’s most formidable enemies,” Nolan said in a statement.

Hathaway was on the the list of actresses which tested for the role in recent weeks, along with Jessica Biel and Keira Knightley, as revealed by Heat Vision.

The test involved Bale, who had to leave his National Board of Review in New York dinner early so he could catch a flight back to LA. to conduct.

The announcement didn’t actually name Hathaway’s character as Catwoman, which keeps in line with Nolan’s more grounded approach to the movie series.

Michelle Pfeiffer starred as Kyle/Catwoman in Tim Burton’s Batman Returns.

The character, as interpreted by Burton, was a meek secretary who becomes empowered after she is almost killed and left for dead.

Pfeiffer played her with a mix of repression and sensuality, with the character breaking out as a symbol of female empowerment and becoming a pop culture sensation.

In his interpretation, Nolan has been giving his characters a deeper and darker psychological edge.

Nolan and his team of writers (he wrote the screenplay with his brother Jonah Nolan, from a story by Nolan and David S. Goyer) have taken some inspiration for their take on Batman from the classic Batman: Year One storyline by Frank Miller and David Mazzucchelli, by way of asking, “What if the story continued?”

The Catwoman in Year One was a prostitute-dominatrix who helps Batman even as he inadvertently inspires her to don a costume and embark on a life of crime.

Warner gave no indication if this was Nolan’s take on the character.

Julie Newmar, Eartha Kitt and Lee Meriweather played Catwoman opposite Adam West in the Batman TV show and movie of the 1960s, while Halle Berry portrayed the character in the failed 2004 spinoff movie.

The movie is looking at a May start, with shooting to take place in London and Los Angeles. It’s slated for release on July 20, 2012.

No one was able to see Heath Ledger as Joker, trust me, I remember all the WTF's when his name was announced and he ended up being amazing in that role, so I'm sure the same will happen here.

Also Tom Hardy will be playing Bane.

See, now that I could have seen and she would have been Bad ass in that role I think.

Guarantee they make Anne's role like a nerdy, quiet woman who turns into this totally confident and crazed villian. Its not like shes done that whole transformation role before :p

The same thing happened to Annette Benning who actualy got the role before Warren Beaty knocked her up :p. Michelle Pfeiffer did an amazing job, but i think Annette would have been even better

My all time fave catwoman is still Julie Newmar>> http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0L3UrW_jCDY To Wong Foo :hehehe:

Concur that it doesn't seem a great choice on paper but that given the track record of those involved we should give them the benefit of the doubt.

Bane is another iffy choice for me, hard to put his appearance in the dreadful Batman Forever out of my mind.

Of the Batman movies before the current series, I think Batman returns is best, those versions of Catwoman and the Penguin would be hard to top.

Thought Jim Carrey's Riddler was good, but dragged down by a poor film.

Heather Ledger far exceeded Jack Nicholson's Joker for me.

As for Batman, arse though he can be, Bale is probably the best.

Have a huge soft spot for the 60's series, so many of the guest villains are a joy, and Adam West is great and crazy.

I think she will play just as Selina not as Catwoman... because Nolan told that there will have two female characters and there will have two villains. Some suggested the other villain is Talia al Ghul.

Apparently Marion Cotillard has been cast, since the article states they didnt actually name Hathaway as Catwoman, could Cotillard be the character? She'd certainly be more convincing.

She is cute and all. :) But catwoman really  compare her to Halle Berry  Anne does not associate with sex appeal.
Two things:

1: Halle Berry's Catwoman was an abomination.

2: Practically nobody is as beautiful as Halle Berry.

On both points, nobody should be compared to Berry's catwoman. It's really just not fair to anybody, her included.

Wait, three things:

3: Whether or not Hathaway has the sex appeal to pull this off is certainly debatable. A large fraction of the Internet would probably disagree with you.

Apparently Marion Cotillard has been cast, since the article states they didnt actually name Hathaway as Catwoman, could Cotillard be the character? She'd certainly be more convincing.

I read about 12343 articles that did name Hathaway as cat woman. So, unless all of my entertainment sites are wrong (unlikely, but possible), it's a done deal. No idea what Cotillard will be doing. Something magical, I'm sure.

Right. These could all have used the same source, and could all have it wrong:

http://www.people.com/people/article/0,,20458850,00.html
http://www.imdb.com/news/ni7011928/
http://latimesblogs.latimes.com/gossip/2011/01/anne-hathaway-catwoman-dark-knight-rises-selina-kyle.html

http://www.deadline.com/2011/01/anne-hathaway-wins-selina-kyle-role-in-the-dark-knight-rises/

But probably not.

Seriously, it's a done deal. Don't use The Hollywood Reporter as your only source. For anything. Ever. For that matter, don't use People, either.

Hathaway will be playing Selina Kyle. Selina Kyle is Catwoman. She might not spend the movie running around in leather, but she's playing the character who eventually becomes the woman that runs around in leather.

Non-conventional casting is part of what makes me love Nolan films. I could never have imagined Joseph Gordon-Levitt in a fight scene before Inception.

No clue what Marion could be doing but if it's true, all the more awesome.

I think she's a great choice. Jessica Biel can barely act, she is sexier though. I think she'll make it work, especially with Nolan giving the characters a darker edge.

I can see it, if you're going toward one of the earlier, more sex-kitten type Catwoman incarnation. I kinda favored the psychopathic 'Birds of Prey' Catwoman, in which case Knightley would have been a better fit. None of them blow me away as choices, but I can't think of an actress in the age range I'd cast, outside of Jennifer Garner.

Makes you wish Sean Young was 28.

Or that the had the imagination and guts to cast Ziyi Zhang (http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0955471/)
