Schnyder unsure about continuing playing career

Patty Schnyder is unsure how long she will continue to play on tour. The Swiss veteran lost in the first round at the Australian Open.

"I haven't made any commitments beyond the next one or two months," she said. "I'll play Fed Cup against Israel and then Doha and Dubai. After that I don't know."

Never a fan but she will be missed. Her game is so different and effective when its working.

She should at least play out the year. Or until clay seaon ends anyway. Never was a fan of her, but still would be sad to see her pack it in too soon.

I actually expected her to announce her retirement after the AO, but maybe she's going to try and play herself into some form before she makes a decision.

Not a surprise. I didn't think she'd continue after last year.

I'd forecast Patty Playing thru RG; I'll still say @ least thru Charleston, where she had the big run to the 2002 final that she lost to Iva. (Beating Momo, Mahree, Jen, and Serena to get to the F) She could always skip IW and Key Biscayne with claimed injuries to avoid the zero points thing, and finish her career with the 2 green clay events; and would surely get MD wildcards for them if needed.

BTW, I hear that Hoffy isn't even @ the AO (maybe having been fired by the Oprandi's and having given up on landing another player to err, "coach").

this really isn't surprising...
I just hope she makes an effort to play through the French - that's truly the place where she should have her last match

I'm sure your favourite player will hear much the same when her day comes.

I feel like Patty is one of those players who still likes being a pro but isn't motivated enough to work really hard and fight through matches tournament after tournament, day after day any more, and that's what it takes these days to even have a chance.

i doubt she'll retire. she didn't play any leads up to the Australian Open which is highly unusual for her. My hope is that she's had an early mid-life crisis and dumped her loser husband.

It's so funny to think that i saw this thread and chose to read about Cornet beating MJMS first  6 or 7 years ago i would still be reeling from her first round exit. hopefully it's a sign i have more of a life now

I hope she continues until Olympics, she can improve her ranking by playing international tournaments and then, on clay, she has the advantage that young ballbashers do not have a clue about clay game.
If she stays healthy results will come :yeah:
Hold on, Patty :yeah::cheer:

If she's going to play Dubai she may as well stick through to the FO; the clay is her best friend.

She withdrew from those tournaments because of a bad flu. :awww:

It is all about the surface.
The most surfaces don't suit her game and her spin has no effect.

In AO, they changed the court four years ago and since then she played bad. Before that, the AO was her favourite Slam.

She thinks that she need to change her game but she has not the time to change it.
I think she has to remind her what her weapons are (serve, forehand, hyper topspin, angles, tactics, fitness) and she has to work hard enough to win long 3-setters.

Her main issue is the calendar.
She has to choose those tournaments with a surface which activate her game (which accent and bring out her spin...).

Paris (indoors), Bogota, Acapulco, Charleston, Stuttgart, Madrid, Rome, French Open, Budapest, Palermo, 1-2 us series hardcourt tournaments (they haven't all the same surface so she has to figure out her best ones), US Open, Quebec, Linz, Moskau.

(I know that she has to go to Wimblebon because of the rules.
But it is probably more senseful when she plays bogota and acapulco instead of indian wells and when she plays moscow instead of luxembourg.)

she should retire already, she's been questionning herself since 2 seasons and she has done nothing in a long long time. She's starting to be totally irrelevant, she should quit while people still remember her past great results. Anyway, I don't see her continuing she has no will anymore.

I disagree with those who say Schnyder should retire.

Look at all those other old bags hanging around the tour right now - Grabin, Tanasugarn, Craybas, Date. Hell, Ann Kremer just played through the AO qualifying draw at age 35. Patty is a few years younger and by far a better player than any of these. If Tanasugarn can manage to win matches with that big beer gut and ugly slasher game, it would be idiotic to run a player like Schnyder - who can still actually entertain - off the tour prematurely.

I still think Patty is capable of making the top-30 again but when you've spent so long in the top-15, I doubt this is a goal which will motivate her. I just hope she plays at least one more full season.

At least all those women actually seem like they want to continue playing. I've lost count of the amount of matches I've seen Patty barely put in any effort whatsoever, and it's not as if her game matches up well against hard-hitting baseliners so she'll just keep racking up losses.
