Simply and truly amazing!

The shrieks, the wind, the dress, the injury, the crowd, Oracene, the bagel, the lost earring, the fight!

Zahlavova was desperately celebrating every single point that she won. :o
They definitely had an intense grunt battle. Most dramatic match I've seen! Just so much intensity...

"Anyone who doesn't think women handle pain better than men, I give you Venus Williams." - James LaRosa

Great handshake by the way! So epic!

Messness. From locker-room on out. Injury was definitely an issue, but that dress didn't help.
Really hope that thigh recovers.

great win. she really fought through that injury and jsut focused on being aggressive.

Zhalavova was impressive but imo her 2nd serve is crap and she was jsut going for broke all match long. Today all her huge shots went in but my guess is she's not ranked 98 for no reason.

I don't care that Venus' dress looks like an apple pie on her stomach, that was incredible fight and grit and determination that made me respect her even more. She's never retired from a match at a major and I didn't know that until they put that stat up!!! The commentators had her down and out before the second set even began. Credit to Zahvalova for bringing it (as many of these girls do against the WS) but even I thought this was a tall task for Venus!!!

I don't care if Venus loses 0-0 next match. She showed such great courage and respect for the sport today unlike some other players who have retired when they could've continued even if to just limp out in a quick defeat. I LOVE YOU VENUS EBONY STARR WILLIAMS!!! Should've been to sleep over an hour ago but that was well worth the wait for a great win.

I'm going to be honest, i'm glad she won, but im not happy the way she played. I know she was injured but Venus was making errors before she pulled her groin. I think the injury in the 2nd set made her slow her ass down ,stop all that damn yelling and foced a little more but anyway...she won so im glad. As much as I want her to win this tournament, I highly doubt she will...and i REALLY hope she proves me wrong. I love Venus and Serena BOTH equally but she is nothing like her sister with fight and intimidation. She won tonight because she played a pretty new and green player, not because of fight imo...lets step it up 3rd round big Vee! If i'm being hard on her please let me know lol...I just love her though...and want her to get this damn title b4 she retires! lol

lets be honest even before venus got injured this match was a complete mess. unless venus's movement from the injury improves over the next day or so she will be a sitting duck for petkovic.

zahlavova has no serve and very little else to her game, you have to wonder what venus was doing in the 1st set playing pit pat rallies with her?

What a MESS. An entertaining mess at that.

Sandra lost all focus when Venus took the injury timeout and could never recover.

That is BS. Sandra had every opportunity to win and she didn't take them. She could have forced a break point from Venus in the third set, but she didn't.. In fact, after the first set, Venus didn't face another break point.

I hate how everyone is downplaying Sandra's abilities. Indeed her serve was trash, but some of her groundstrokes were on fire IMO, and she had momentum with the crowd on her side. Still, so impressed with Venus, especially since she's not the Williams who mounts comebacks like this very often. Nor does she have the best record in three-setters these days. Once she lost the first set I was done... Then the bagel :hearts:

No one ever wins pretty everytime. From the moment Venus stepped on the court something was not right. she was lethargic looking. Not moving quite right. Making toooooooo many errors but then the injury and timeout, gave her time to reflect and calm her self down. Congrats Venus for pulling out the win. Happy for you. No matter what the critics say you played to win finally because you could have simply said to hell with this. it shows Venus wants this. Will she get it? I def hope so. On to round 3, heal and come out swinging.

I'm Australian, and I really didn't get the motivation of the crowd in this match. Sure, Zahlavova was the under-dog, but Venus was injured, and it was pushing it to even have a great player or her caliber even playing out the entire duration of the match. She could've just retired, and given the crowd no match at all, but they showed no compassion to her, and chose to rally behind the annoying and irritating Zahlavova and her stupid gestures everytime she lost a point.

I must first respect the fact that this was a very entertaining match but then you see Vee isn't going to make it far in there - statistics just don't lie (...) Injury + fatigue + jam packed draw is just too much for one simple young lady to bear. Suddenly Andrea you can have your breakthrough just there right now next.

What  Venus was a hot mess out there... I'll give her credit for continuing at all, But the end day, even in a wheelchair Venus should of destroyed Craplavova because she is way and away the better player period.

However it definitely was NOT a great moment... both players have no right to be happy after that distaster. Women's tennis lost big time today.

And Uranium is a bigoted idiot and deserves everything he gets. :wavey:

But does it really matter, because as long as it isn't Serena, your favorite is no where near Venus. Seriously can not believe people like you. Great fight and competitiveness today from Venus. She really showed some grit out there today. That aside, her form in the next couple of rounds could be questionable, and fortunately today, she had an opponent she could out-hit and dictate to. She may not have been so fortunate if she had been playing an opponent with a reasonable amount of power from the back of the court and service, ala Sharapova or Li Na, where she relies on her superior movement to retrieve balls that they are not used to getting back, and sometimes with interest, she may have lost.

VENUS WILLIAMS: Oh, the outfit is inspired by Alice in Wonderland. Yeah, don't laugh. But it's kind of about a surprise, because when Alice goes down the hole, the rabbit hole, she finds all these things that are so surprising.

This outfit is about having a surprise in tennis a dress, and kind of, you know, showing some skin and then just having a print. Prints don't happen that often in tennis. So it's called the Wonderland dress. It was fun.

Anyone have any idea how this type of injury heals? is it likely to be something that will get better after a few days rest?

After a groin injury, it's important to take your time returning to sports. Starting back too soon can increase your risk of re-injury or developing a chronic groin pain. Visiting a therapist or trainer who specializes in athletic injury is the safest way to guage your return to sports. Some general guidelines include:

* You should be pain free, have no swelling, and have full range-of-motion in the hip.
* You should have full or close to full strength, and are able to fully bear weight without limping.
* Even if you feel 100 percent you may have deficits in strength, joint stability, flexibility or skill.
* Take extra care with the injured part for several months.

As for that dress, that probably is one of the worst ever, more so than that black & gold train wreck of a dress Aravane Rezai wears. Hopefully for the sake of tennis fans everywhere, she'll cut that thing into shreds, so we'll never have to see it again.

Ok guys re: the Aussie crowd, I don't get what there is to discuss. The crowd here never supported either Williams sister and they probably never will. It's fine, the sisters know this, they don't care. But to pretend it's not happening is just stupid. I live here and have done all my life. Not one single person I know likes either Williams sister. I go to the open every year and it's the same story. However, tennis is not about that and we can see in two major and iconic champions, the Williams sisters, that victory is about overcoming your circumstances, whatever they may be. Boo, cheer, jeer, it doesn't matter. It's all about the 'w'.

Very very strange match. One of the strangest Ive seen and Ive seen a lot of strange matches. First and foremost that was a remarkably courageous effort to comeback after what was clearly a very painful injury. Strange though how the injury somehow seemed to focus the mind so that Venus actually did play better after the injury that before, and let me be very clear I don't doubt for a minute that Venus did injury herself and was in some pain/discomfort the entire last 2 sets.

Regarding Zahlavova, well she did play better, substantially so, than I thought she could in that 1st set even if a subpar Venus contributed to that effort. I'd say Zahlavova played to a top 30 standard in that 1st set. As others have said that grunting was awful and she didn't come across in a very likable way either. It was also remarkable just how poorly Zahlavova coped with Venus's injury. While Venus was able to raise her level once injured maybe 20%, Zahlavova's form must have dipped 30 or 40% after Venus's injury. She simple lost all impetus after Venus's injury break and looked absolutely feeble in that 2nd set. It is well known that often players find it tricky playing an injured opponent and lose their killer instinct but this was perhaps the most extreme case of that I have ever seen. So in the end this was not a performance that reflected well on her mental strength.

Zahlavova has be given a lot of flac in this thread for that handshake. I can understand that. It didn't look good. But I imagine she was probably pretty disgusted with her poor effort in those last two sets after really playing pretty darn well in that 1st set. Opportunities like beating a player of Venus Williams's calibre don't come around very often for journeywomen players and in fairness no player on the tour suits the "journeywomen" description better than Sandra Zahlavova. So I can sympathise with the reasons behind her less than sporting handshake. I think Venus, with all the class she has, could too. I strongly suspect what was said at the net was something along the lines of "I can see you are upset about how that went but try to take away the positives, you played a tough match and well done to you for that." That would have been a very sporting gesture from Venus if she did indeed say something along those lines but it would be in keeping with her character.

As for the audience....well I have to say there have been times when Williams sisters fans have been touch sensitive about the treatment and support that audiences have given the sisters. Not today. That audience was horrible. There are no two ways about it. Shameful. Venus was giving a performance of genuine courage out there and the audience responded by giving her virtually nil support and even goaded her when she struggled to get her ball toss where she wanted. Very poor showing from the Aussie audience it must be said. Personally I found it very disappointing to see.

Q. Could you talk us through your outfit tonight?

VENUS WILLIAMS: Oh, the outfit is inspired by Alice in Wonderland. Yeah, don't laugh. But it's kind of about a surprise, because when Alice goes down the hole, the rabbit hole, she finds all these things that are so surprising.

This outfit is about having a surprise in tennis a dress, and kind of, you know, showing some skin and then just having a print. Prints don't happen that often in tennis. So it's called the Wonderland dress. It was fun.

Vee, we already know the surprise that's under your dress, no need to frame it in gardening materials.

Fair enough. But three things that you didn't mention:

1. Venus took an injury timeout after losing the 1st set. The German ES commentators said that it lasted 10 mins (only 3 mins plus diagnosis are allowed) and thought that it was ridiculous.

2. Venus after that injury timeout was hobbling between the points but during them she was runnung fast.

3. She was repeatedly aborting her service motion which could have thrown her opponent off mentally.

I'm not bashing Venus. Just trying to understand and explain why the audience maybe were not so friendly towards Venus.

That's one of the most bizarre matches i've seen Venus play, and one of the gutsiest. There was one running BHDTL that embodied everything Venus invested in that match. Her body was breaking, the crowd looked ready to throw things at her, her opponent was playing around 80% her normative standard, Oracene was going bat-shit insane. A recipe for disaster, that was remarkably thwarted. A match to remember for Venus i think, if not for quality, just the sheer almost farcical elements she had to overome.

But that dress:o There are hookers in Harlem cringing at the crassness of that dress.

I wish that I could have stayed up to watch the entire match. I would love to see that second set bagel:lick:.

While I did know who won points when I was out of the tv room due to the incessant cheering for Zahlavova, I did hear that Venus had her fans in the crowd. I heard some very loud, C'MON VENUS cheers. I thought some of the cheering was a bit excessive but what is new? Venus is used to it and I am sure that after ALL these years of lukewarm support (until she wins) she has learned to tune it out. Anyways, the crowd and her opponent go home disappointed and Venus moves on to the next round. :wavey::p

Now any footage of this handshake? :D

This is the match of the tournament. It literally brought tears to my eyes to see Venus hurt & to see that she had tears in her eys. I know some of her tears were for pain but from the intense look in her eyes they were also from someone who really wants to win this tournament. Just when she is feeling better something like this happens but she did not give up, she fought to the end and won this match that many people would have retired from or lost.

Venus is a true champion & I hope by some miracle she can win this tournament.

Injury Doesn’t Bode Well for Venus Williams

By CHRISTOPHER CLAREY (http://topics.nytimes.com/top/reference/timestopics/people/c/christopher_clarey/index.html?inline=nyt-per)

Published: January 19, 2011

MELBOURNE — It could have been another day at the Australian Open of frivolous themes, with the focus on Venus Williams (http://topics.nytimes.com/top/reference/timestopics/people/w/venus_williams/index.html?inline=nyt-per)’s latest risqué tennis dress. But then Williams screamed in pain as she lost the last point of the first set, limped to her chair and hobbled slowly off the court for treatment.

It was hardly out of line to wonder whether she would bother to return with her plucky, second-round opponent Sandra Zahlavova already up a set and looking eager to run (and grunt) for hours more.

But Williams, after 17 years as a professional, has yet to retire from a Grand Slam singles match, and when she finally re-emerged from the tunnel leading to Rod Laver Arena with tape wrapped tightly around her upper right leg, her usual, impassive expression was gone, replaced by a grim look that her mother and coach, Oracene Price, said she knew well.

“She had the no-lose look, the I’m-definitely-not-losing look,” Price said afterward, shaking her big curls. “It’s been a while since I’ve seen that one, but when I saw it, I quietly knew what was going to happen.”

Making it happen would require plenty more time and grinding effort, but with Zahlavova looking disoriented and ultimately distraught, Williams painstakingly turned the match around, winning the final two sets despite obvious limitations to close out a strange-but-true 6-7 (8), 6-0, 6-4 victory.

“It was really tough, but I’m a long way from home, and it’s such a long way home; I didn’t want to go back yet,” Williams, the No. 4 seed, said on court. “I don’t know what happened. I just started going for shots, and I’m not sure she was as composed as before. You’ve got to be able to play under all kinds of circumstances — good, bad, strange, weird, bizarre, all of the above. So I was glad to come through.”

Her delight may be tempered by the knowledge that her chances of going deep in this Grand Slam tournament are now significantly compromised. The problem, according to Williams, is a hip flexor strain, specifically in the right psoas muscle, a major muscle that runs from the lower spine to the hip.

“I’m going just to try to recover for Friday and try to get ready to play and bring my best tennis no matter what,” said Williams, who will play Andrea Petkovic next.

Injuries have long limited Williams, who is now 30 years old — cutting into her playing time and forcing her to play catch-up at many a Grand Slam event. She played little after Wimbledon last year because of knee problems and arrived in Melbourne without having played an official match since the U.S. Open (http://topics.nytimes.com/top/reference/timestopics/subjects/u/united_states_open_tennis/index.html?inline=nyt-classifier) semifinals last September.

She frequently appeared to be struggling for breath during her grueling first set Wednesday, which was brimming with rallies punctuated by massive shrieks from both players, prompting the British player Andy Murray to send the following Twitter (http://topics.nytimes.com/top/news/business/companies/twitter/index.html?inline=nyt-org) message while watching the match on television: “Turned it on and thought someone was giving birth.”

But on the last point of the tiebreaker, Williams stretched high for a backhand and then reached down to grab at her lower abdominal area. She was unable to give chase as her Czech opponent slapped a forehand winner to close out the set.

Williams, grimacing, took plenty of time to reach her chair, calling for the trainer along the way, and then left the court for more than 10 minutes to be evaluated and treated before returning to play on in a tournament that she — unlike her younger sister, Serena (http://topics.nytimes.com/top/reference/timestopics/people/w/serena_williams/index.html?inline=nyt-per) — has never won.

“I think this being a major definitely has a lot to do with me staying on the court,” Williams said. “I really haven’t retired from a match in any tournament in quite a long time. I think that’s a testament to how I feel when I step on the court. I’m there to stay.” Williams has risked further injury before, playing and losing in the 2003 Wimbledon final against Serena after aggravating a strained abdominal muscle in the semifinals.

“It’s been a long time, so I don’t remember that pain anymore,” Williams said. “In recent time that I can remember pain, I think this was one of the toughest ones for sure. But I just wanted to stay on the court and try to survive and see if I could feel better another day.”

It has been, thus far, an exceedingly frustrating tournament for the underdog. All top 16 men’s and women’s seeds advanced to the second round, and there was another great escape earlier Wednesday in the men’s tournament when the ninth-seeded Fernando Verdasco saved three match points before rallying to defeat Janko Tipsarevic.

Williams, wearing a dress with a lattice-work midriff that she said had been inspired by Alice in Wonderland, was never in that vulnerable a position on the scoreboard, but she looked every bit as vulnerable in the early stages of the second set as she moved in a gingerly fashion along the baseline and did not bother to run down some of Zahlavova’s shots to the corners. But despite that obvious advantage, Zahlavova, ranked 97th, could not manage to win a game, making unforced errors in bunches and keeping the ball to Williams’s forehand when the backhand was obviously the more difficult shot for Williams to hit.

“It was not so good for me because I start thinking, ‘Can I win or can I lose?”’ Zahlavova said.

If Williams had lost, the United States would have been without a representative in the third round after starting the tournament with 12 players in the women’s draw. Serena Williams, the champion last year, did not make the trip to Australia to defend her title because she was recovering from foot surgery, which also means that Venus will not get the chance to defend the doubles title she won with Serena last year.

But in light of the painful developments Wednesday, perhaps it is best that Venus has to worry only about the singles in Melbourne.

Several hours later and I still don't know what to say about this match. As soon as Venus started struggling to break/consolidate break points in the 1st set, I put my tv on mute. I am just conditioned to do so, and I am glad that I missed the crowds behavior. Seeing that awful injury happen at the end of the tb, I thought, "She's not gonna win. It is going to be another early exit." But then Vee came back out, limping yes, but totally in "I'm not going to lose to a woman who has to play 37 tournaments a year just to be in the top 100." Vee put her head down and grinded this win out.

Zahlavova was way too emotional for her to win this match. She really doesn't have a lot to trouble top 50 players when they are on, but she was acting like she was in control of the match. The second serve was non-existent and she has trouble controling/creating her own pace. Plus her attitude was so piss poor (and I am not talking about the handshake either). Her coach, however, looked geniunely supportive of her efforts out there which was nice to see.

Matty, Matty, Matty...

1) Venus was seriously injured and she took as much time as she was allowed to and it was justified.
So, NO, it wasn't "ridiculous".

2) Venus was fighting the pain during the points and she was on adrenaline and focused as well. Between the points, she was hobbling because she'd feel the pain more, I believe.

3) As for her service motion, she's been struggling with it for a while. It's not like it was the first it had happenned. She wasn't purposely aborting it.

Peace out.
