Watching Venus vs Zahlavova match live, and during in the tie-breaker on set point, Venus made a lunging backhand volley. She immediately screamed out in pain, held the suspect area, and called for the trainer. As a result,She has lost the point and opening set 7-6. It doesn't look good.

This could also affect Zahlovova. She appears to be rattled. Playing an injured opponent, having her momentum broken.

I don't know why she is bothering. She could win today, but she sure as hell will get her ass beat by Petkovic and is risking further damage.

Maybe she thinks if she wins some treatment could do wonders. Look what doctors were able to do for Henin in almost no time between the Capriati semi and Clijsters final at the 2003 U.S Open.

Sandra doesn't even know to pull venus out wide on her backhand since that is the leg she injured. :smash:

Very different scenario that was cramp this looks like a pull and she's having lots of problems hitting off her backhand.

Poor Venus. She really looks in so much pain. The most hilarious thing is this other girl is imploding. It will be interesting to see if Venus even plays her next round if she wins. She probably would, after all she put out all this effort (win or lose) today.

Because since her time out, Zahlavova has been playing worse Tennis than a severely injured Venus. Zahlavova's on court persona is really starting to annoy me, the shrieks, the agitated attitude. I hope Venus double bagels her in the last two sets. I really don't get how Zahlavova even scored a game in the first set watching her now. She doesn't hit expecially hard, she seems pretty slow, and her serve is pitiful

You're obviously not watching the match at all. Had she started hitting to Venus' backhand she would have won the set 6-0 but she decided not to and Venus hit tonnes of forehands and made them for the most part. I'm highly impressed with Venus to come out and give it this effort nothing but respect for that.

Because Venus tends to ball bash and make stupid unforced errors.

Once she slowed down the pace in the 2nd set and put more air in her shots and started opening the court: Bagel.

Are you even watching the match? A, the injury is in her hip or groin area, B, She's moving like a cripple, and C, her service action is basically all arm. She's winning because she has no choice but to play aggressively and dictate, and because Zalhavova is imploding.

Turn on the tv if you have doubts - by the way I'm no doctor but if you have an injury to your leg it doesn't effect your arm

Exactly what I was thinking. Engage in backhand to backhand rallies. When Venus has to hit off the left leg on her open Stance backhand she is hitting 1/2 pace shots because she is favouring the leg.
Pull her wide on the backhand and either come in for the volley or forehand putaway.

Your serve is very dependent on your legs. Moreso the left leg for players that pull the right leg in (like Venus) and the left leg is Venus injured leg.

it makes sense that she can't really lean into the serve with her left leg due to the injury.

Also, another point on legs and serving, the only time I have cramped playing tennis was in my left calf muscle, while I was serving. You push off your legs while serving.

170 kmp'h is a decent average, especially if she's using the slice. It's not like Venus's average is 208 kilometers all the time, so it's an easy mistake to make.

Thanks I'm well aware of that - but i have also seen a Wimbledon final not too long ago where Venus couldn't jump into her serve due to a hip problem and on top of that had a stomach pull as well and yet she still managed to generate great power on the serve due to her long arm and wrist snap.

Well yes, one can generate power on the serve with minimal leg action. Especially if you are tall with lithe arms.

I was merely pointing out what you said that a leg injury would not affect ones serve, when it clearly can.

Hmmm... If Venus injured her right leg, she should be ok hitting her backhand but have trouble with her forehand...

Having done it myself only last year in a squash tournament I think Venus may have pulled her groin. It's a very weird injury and it'll hurt like a bitch tomorrow but it's not the worst injury to have and you can play though it. It just requires a tonne of warming up stretches and you'll go from not being able to touch your knees at the start to being able to touch your toes around 10 15 mins later.
