Rus played really well in the third set but that was all.

Dude. Don't even. The only reason Bethanie had to start that shit is so she wouldn't go crazy and club one of those douchebags to death with her racket. From start to finish they were erupting into cheers on every UE, net ball, DF. It was absolutely disgusting.

No. They're were being down right rude. They were jeering Bethanie if she asked if a ball was out, she wanted the lines to be dried and they were yelling and jeering some more, if she asked the ump a question they thought it was their place to answer. They were just a bunch of assholes.

They were just a bunch of assholes.Please... There was nothing wrong with the dutch crowd. They were being loud, but never during a point. And so what if they said something when she wanted to check a mark. Don't be a baby over nothing. Besides, you are pretty much the only one who was bothered with them.
I am sure that had nothing to do with you being an american and your american was losing... ?

If any, Mattek should have gotten a warning for that very unsportmanlike behaviour at the point you are describing. Ridiculous from her.

Good win Aran!

Unsportsman-like behavior award goes to the Dutch Douches in the first row. :)

I can handle my players losing, but when their being bullied by a bunch of obnoxious dickheads then I have a problem with it. If you watched the match, you would know what they were doing was beyond just cheering for their player. Every unforced error, every double fault, anything Bethanie did they have something to say about it. They acted like a bunch of assholes and thats how they came off to any sane person watching.

It's tennis so these matches will obviously have an audience, part of the players job is to deal with the environment including the crowd. They were doing what normal crowds do for their player, it's not like they would interfere the actual play.

i want bethanie well rested for the aussie open.

Going deep in hopman and then here, I don't like her chances for the big one then.

That was after the pavlyuchenkova retirement, and lo and behold, bethanie screwed it all up. This loss pissed me off to no end, from the crowd to bethanie's choking. I really expected third or fourth round from her but of course, she doesn't tank useless hobart at all and kills her body.

Too much stupidity for me to comprehend.

I'm definitely a new fan of Mattek-Sands. She's got game, style and a lotta heart. Unfortunately, sometimes she has too much heart and goes for way too much. It must have been so frustrating out there when she was trying so hard, but making so many errors. She needs to learn to settle down and be a little more patient. I wasn't that impressed with Rus--yah, she was pretty solid, kept her cool and has a good serve, but nothing too incredible imho.

 This discussion is all about nationalism. The Dutch are a nationalistic nation and, especially in sports events, they behave accordingly. Same goes with Israelis and other small sportsnations. In football the crowds are bad, insulting, but there it's considered "normal".

Now I have experienced the Dutch tennis crowd in Australia myself, and I have to say, 99% of them has no specific knowledge about tennis. They are just there on holiday/backpacking/studying whatsoever, and because of their nationalistic mindset they want to cheer at the few sports stars we have as much as possible. We are a small country, unlike the big USA with endless amounts of sports stars and teams to cheer on.

In tennis, there seems to be some sort of etiquette when it comes to the audience's behavior. But how do you 'educate' an enthousiastic group of people who know nothing about the sport and just want to have a party cheering on the achievements of a countrymate?

No, it was very slippery, Beth was just taking care to avoid injury. Sania did the same thing against Henin and it seemed to really cost her, she didn't come back as the same player.

I am sad for Beth but happy for Aranxta.

so why did she lose to a mediocre player:rolleyes:she has never won a a singles title even a tier 5,never reached qtrs of a slam, has never been a top 30 player..she is very good at wearing tacky outfits:rolleyes:at 26yrs the boat is slowly leaving the shore. She can make a living on tour but she is just as mediocre as can be.:p

She is 25--and did you even watch the match? She lost because she was going for winners, and having a lousy day of it. But her game is infinitely more interesting than her opponents.

And I'll tell you why she is where she is--she gets too emotional and goes for too much, but she's hardly mediocre--just passionate.

in a month she will be 26yrs old.Why was she going for winners all the time, that shows that she doesnt have a tennis brain and with your opinion of her being interesting thats just an opinion. If she gets too emotional enough to lose sight of the task at hand then she deserves to be called mediocre. She should learn to channel that passion positively and then she will start winning important matches.:wavey:

They can't help it:

A year ago, Rus had her weight listed as 128--seemed right. This year she is listed at 143 pounds--is this honesty about her weight gain a dutch thing? The dutch crowd would not stoop to hollering insults towards a Rus opponent like ***** for being less than honest about what they weighed, would they?

Woot!!! No more fugly outfits on the singles court :inlove:

Not to mention the fact that it is another American out of the draw which is always good news :hearts:

I stand corrected after seeing Venus' distaster of an outfit yesterday :sobbing:

What is it with American players and their tragic taste in clothes

This is the start of many great things to come in 2011. The 2011 Rus is fit and fierce :worship:

I have to admit, the Dutch crowd can be very annoying. But all credit to Arantxa! Major upset!

Let this be the truth :inlove:

with your opinion of her being interesting thats just an opinion.

Well, if she's not interesting, then why are there so many posts in here. People like her because she's got a nice tennis game and she has a fun personality and dresses crazy to lighten things up a bit--that's why. If she's not interesting to you then don't comment in her threads.

And as if you calling her "mediocre" isn't also your opinion.
