Solid match from Caro. Definitely improved her form from Sydney. Not great, but not bad tennis today. :)

Gisela... too many errors, too many wasted chances. :( Good luck in doubles now. :yeah:

Highlight of the match: Papa Wozniacki's facepalming.:rolls: :haha:

What the FUCK was that from Dulko, Caroline didn't do a single thing but push the ball in, did she even hit a single forehand winner?

Caroline's not making it far playing this boring ass tennis.

You couldn't tell that these two were number one players in the world. :help:

Caro will probably be kicked out before the quarters. She's reverted back to her old '07 level of pushing. She doesn't even hit her occasional backhand DTL winners anymore. :tape:

First in-form player and she'll be toast.

Woz 15 15
Gise 35 38

Most frustrating match ever.

Dulko was toying with Wozniacki until she was hitting one of those awful errors.
Missed many, many volleys and she's the freaking #1 in Doubles.

As always, Wozniacki def. Talent.
But she deserves some credit as she works extremely, extremely hard to reach her maximum potential.

The last point showed Caro can perfectly play aggresive effective tennis, too bad she does not do that very often...

Caroline lost lots of things she did well last year. Her movement was sooo poor. But Gisela always hit an error to compensate that tho. Short balls need to be hit better. She didn't do enough with those. Most of the time I don't think she knew what she was doing honestly.

Wozniacki is the worst number one I've ever seen play tennis. She plays so boring. The two things that she has to be grateful for today is the UE's from Dulko and the person that made her dress. If the argentine made half less she totally could of win at least a set of this girl. Please let someone crush her early!!! :embarassment:

Say what you want about Caro, but she is a real slugger. Sure, she's got a pretty limited game, but her mentality and consistency are two very admirable facets of her game.

Also, I feel that Caro's 1st serve is not given enough credit at all. It's actually a really solid shot.

dulko is for the most part a top class idiot, matches like this are the story of her career. she will without fail hit an error on the big points, has no idea how to play a point on its importance. the story of this match is dulko tried to do far too much and didn't keep it simple and look for the opening on the big points.

caro was solid, but her game is nowhere near the level of the summer hardcourt season. she isn't beatin henin with that tennis.

Watched this with some relatives, who only see tennis when the AO is on. None of them could believe that Caroline is the number 1, she can be so underwhelming. This form is definately a regression from the end of last year. I'm by no means a fan, but I think it's really important for the tour that she gets back to that level at least.

Caro is apparently still not at all up to her level of last year post-Wimbledon.

So-so / OK match for an opener, mainly due to Gisela's varieties of shots.

Caro very rusty. Not as rusty as Sharapova in the previous match, and overall this match not as boring, but still too mediocre.

Pretty much what I expected from Caro at this time of year. She's never at her best early in the season, needing a number of matches under her belt to get her rhytm going (her racket switch might also be a factor). She'll probably improve a bit as the tournament progresses but she's unlikely to win the whole thing. She'd have a much better chance of winning AO if it was the last slam of the season (as it once was) instead of the first.

Wozniacki's new service motion has not yet came together. She's serving considerably lower percentage wise which got her into trouble when Dulko's returns were connecting.

Dulko had some success with her FH angle and especially with her dropshot. Wozniacki is generally helpless against players with a decent or better dropshot, and for a while Gisela was winning every point that she used it.

She went to the well TOO often though and once Wozniacki started to pick up on it, Dulko couldn't do much damage trading mid-paced, topspin balls with no reprieve.

Exactly! I'm glad I'm not the only one... The dress is just plain hideous on its own, but manages to look absolutely horrible on someone with Wozniacki's figure: she has a stooping posture to begin with, and the dress highlights it... I'm usually just commenting on the tennis: this is the first time I had to come in and say something about that outfit - it was that ugly. :tape:

Piotr says Caro's timing was off, her service motion was stiff and she was far too careful in her play. In short a typical, nervous first round match.
Caro herself assures her play will be better as the tournament progresses.
Next opponent is Vania King. Caro has played her once before at IW last year where she came back from a 1-4 third set deficit to win 5-7, 6-2, 6-4. Coincidentally Dulko had one of her big wins that same day, beating Henin in 3 sets.

For those saying that Caroline will crumble when she meets an in form player don't you leave any room for the possibility that she will start to play better? I agree that if she maintains her form against Dulko that she will not go far but I also think that she can play much better and if she plays her best she could make the quarters (potentially facing Henin) or the semis (potentially facing Venus).

Huzzah for Failniacki.

Getting the match completely dictated to you by the likes of Dulko is another laugh track to add to the continuous LOL that has been her bullshit career.

Dulko dictating pretty much throughout. Some ridiculous errors from her though, 2nd balls in rallies dumped into the net or 10 feet long :help:. Normally, I like Caro, ans she was playing great at the end of last year, but when her shots lack depth and she takes NO risks, she looks very average, to be honest. She usually works balls nice and deep and wide, and then at least looks to put some away. It was Dulko who took the initiative in rallies and hit some decent volleys. Someone like Bartoli will go to town on those midcourt balls (remember JJ @ AO2009?)

Never seen Wozniacki fist-pumping so much. She looks like she feels there IS something to be proved at this tournament.

That's Caro's style of play. You dont get points for 'dictating play'
Caroline plays a defensive style. Of course a doubles player, who has no chance to consistently win points in baseline exchanges with Caroline, will look like they're dictating.

Dulko had some flashes of brilliance against pretty cumbersome world #1, but you ain't gonna beat Woz while making 40 UE in the proccess :help:

No matter what happens in this match, 62 62 Caro, or 62 62 Vania, either way, it will look like Vania is dictating play. Because she doesn't want to get into long baseline rallies with Caro.

WD Caro. The main thing is the win and in straight sets. When she got broken in the second set to lose being up a break - she broke straight back. She's nowhere near how she was playing the last part of last year and the looks on Piotr's face. But after Sydney - I expected this. Hopefully she'll improve as the tournament progresses.

Exactly, which is Caro dictating play. She's fine to get into grinding rallies, but most players aren't - so they play outside their own comfort zone. Caro's insane defensive skills dictate the type of play a lot of her opponents choose.

Firstly, they are not 'insane'. Let's not wrap Wozniacki's defense in superlatives. Compared to players like Jankovic, Clijsters etc, her defensive skills look adequate, being neither a fluid athlete, nor an aesthetically pleasing mover.

Secondly, Wozniacki's style of play does not enforce or dictate anyone. Her game is purely reactive, and it is other player's responsibility to try and hit through her. The emphasis is on her opponents, and rarely on Wozniacki herself.
