An absolute and total mess.

Martha still struggling off the ground against someone who could barely move. All she had to do was not DF and make a few balls and she could have been off in 50 minutes.

I fully back the fact if Tanasugarn were 100% fit she would have taken a set.

Martha's first AO win since winning the title in 2008.

I watched the whole match and Maria better thank her lucky stars that Tammy was so bad.

Maria dug a whole for herself, being down 1-3 0/30*. The match could have been totally different.

She really needs to improve on her form.

Jan 17th, 2011, 12:35 AM
Terrible serving but I was pleased with what I saw in her ground game and movement. However, not much was needed against an opponent who was helpless as soon as she was pulled two metres wide...

lets be fair tammy was f**king aweful. couldn't move, making errors, sitter of serves.

sharapova almost dragged her into the match to in the 2nd set.

sharapova is going nowhere with her serve like it and game where it is.

Pleased with the level of Maria's groundstrokes. :) Much better than in Auckland.
10 DFs is still too much though, 2nd serve is still inconsistent. But to hell with that, I'll take any win right now.

Tammy. Looked hampered by her ankle.

:rocker2:

Masha successfully navigated past a very difficult first round opponent and sent a clear message to her rivals that she is planning on winning the title  I loved the way she served herself out of trouble on break points. Her serve is a huge weapon these days :D

Poor Tammy. I'm not even sure if she should have been playing to be honest. She couldn't put any weight on her ankle.

Big improvement off the ground from Maria compared to Auckland though :)

Jan 17th, 2011, 12:39 AM
Oh god, Maria is going to need to pick it up in the next few rounds if she wants to end the draught of Grandslam QFs. Her Movement and the consistency on her serve were atrocious (when the serve went in, it was actually quite heavy). She was returning much better than she was in Aukland (although its not hard against Tammy), and had a bit more zip on her bh whenever she had the time (again, its not hard to hit winners against tammy, who is probably the slowest player on tour). But a win is a win.

PS:- Her dress is pretty! Love the colours.

Several wasted game points for Tami at *3-1 in 2nd is wasted opportunity to make this match much more interesting.
Not impressed by Maria game today, but for me she is still player to beat in that 2nd quarter... more than Venus, Li or Vika.

Beny
Jan 17th, 2011, 12:40 AM
Maria wasnt convincing at all. This Tanasugarn was never a threat.
Sharapova once she gets out of her comfort zone, which seems to be done pretty easily these days, is very vulnerable. Better players are gonna punish her.

joćo.
Jan 17th, 2011, 12:40 AM
What a mess. Well, the usual one... she's not getting anywhere with that serve once she faces a healthy opponent that feels like beating a former world number one. But congrats, a win is a win and at least didn't lose another R1.
Keep training and please build on this misleading result to improve! :)

Polikarpov
Jan 17th, 2011, 12:41 AM
Still a pretty loose match from Maria. She had no business going down 3-1 against someone who was spraying errors, and couldn't even bother chasing down balls.

Tamarine could hardly move due to injury , her serve was a sitting duck, and her groundstrokes didn't have much on them either. Anyone would have looked good from the baseline today against her.

I wouldn't draw any conclusions about Sharapova's level from this match, besides her serve.

This was about the lease impressive 6-3, 6-1 win i`ve ever seen. Maria at times in the match was dreadful. :help: I don`t know why she won`t go with a kick serve, especially on the second serve. While i`m happy that Maria got the win, obviously there is a lot of work for her do if she wants to go on a deep run.

This wasn't much of a test and CERTAINLY no indication of what Maria is capable of this fortnight.
It's a win and it's great, but who knows how she's gonna play when she plays against an opponent who moves better than Tammy, serves better, hits harder and generally puts more pressure on Maria and especially her serve?

I'm not sure many of you have watched Maria's matches the past couple months and I'm not sure you realize how awful she's been playing. Auckland was one of Maria's worst tournaments, her match against Arn was one of her poorest FOR SURE. No one's saying this is slam winning form, but I'm satisfied, especially after that loss to Arn. That perfection comment was in comparison to that  Overall yes, she was quite average, but I was expecting a 3-set loss or a win here.

What'd you guys expect, really? It's been a week. She's not a fucking magician, she's human. It takes time. The negativity in here is just ridiculous. I know Maria has her delusional fans, but to come into every single thread 'She's sooo getting routed the second she meets a decent opponent' is kinda annoying. Just saying

I admitted it was a strong word, but it was just in the moment right after the match. Might've just been happy she got through so easily, I dunno, whatever it was, I was satisfied  And I actually was impressed with her ground game overall.

And to be fair, I missed the beginning of the second set so it might've seemed better to me than it actually was.

understand the need to believe craig...believe me....but that ground game was only good because of the time tammy gave as she basically has no serve/ground game to press maria...wait before being impressed is my advice - ;)

cant believe people were saying sharapova was good off the ground, the moment tammy was even remotely pulled slightly outwide she either threw in a horrible error or plopped the ball back in court for maria to just hit it into an open court with tammy strnaded.

Seriously who cares Tamarine couldn't move and bla bla bla  (...) Maria beat the faker in straight (...) Tanasugarn just didn't have to simulate whatever she was simulating if she wanted to win bad strategy against a player like Maria. Next.

Why would she fake her injury?

This match can be very misleading, if she was facing someone, let's say Arn, like the Auckland match, and OBVIOUSLY we can't make such assumptions because we don't know how she would handle it today/etc. but once Greta would put actual pressure on Maria like she did on that match, she'd still lose to her similarly. She's never been a total and complete mess and you all know that, just an average player like most of the other players out there with bad days and better days but since it's Maria we're talking about that's why we have these discussions.
But I also understand it takes time to say she really has already improved and I'm already very happy she won too and can continue her form improvement as a player that's still alive in this Slam! :D

Just saying

I understand Maria fans are happy with the win but game wise she was not a lot better than in Auckland.Tammy was just too weak to do anything today. Why should people say she's getting better when she's not ?

Tammy was terrible today she missed almost every shot, something like 5-21. She could barely get to any ball, and her serve was terrible. She was moving so bad, a mid paced shot from Maria became a winner.

The ESPN poll said that 74% of people thought Masha can make it to the 2nd week. Those people are delusional, she isn't winning in this form at least.

Why would she fake her injury?

There are players who are strong at playing hurt, desperate, slow (...) to win and they do get the win if you don't put them away (...) e.g. at 3-1 balls for 4-1 where the match could have turned (...) Nice try Tanasugarn !

Cautious optimism for me. At least she won the 1st round match this time, the pressure of trying to right the disappointment last year and being first on RLA all that must have weighed down on her. And she did hit her groundstrokes crisply, and movement has been decent. I guess that's why Masha fans are generally satisfied with the her ground game.

That second serve, however, is atrocious in the second set. Almost averaged 2 DFs per service game, and all at random times! That I believe needs to be rectified through more matches, which I'm happy that Masha has been planning to (Fed Cup, Doha, Dubai, IW, Miami).

BTW who's this claycourter guy, I just don't see the humour in his supposedly sarcasm?

Maria had a fair match today. Nothing was impressive, but at least she managed to have the work done. By the way, excuse me, but, for someone who couldn't move, Tamarine had some great shots, especially with her forehand. So no, it was not an ugly win.
Talking about Kanepi 3R Match, Maria got chances, particulary if her serve is on. Because actullay, beside the 10 Double faults, when the serve was in, it was really heavy.
I think we had just some "flahs" of the "2008 Sharapova's Aussie Open".
She had so genious moves, but she seems like she lost a little bit confidence.
Reaching this 4R would be a great achievement right now. And beating Venus who seemed quite fragile today against Errani, especially on her serve (she got break once or twice I think) comparing to the entire scoreline.

Serve is still crap :tape: First set was routine bussiness considering Tammy's movement problems, but the second one brought unneccessary drama, once again triggered by the serving issues. Luckily Razzano beat Vesnina whom I consider a more tricky opponent, but unless Kanepi makes a real mess of it in R3, Maria ain't be meeting Venus in R4 with a similar display :o

Hogstedt looked pretty fierce at one point  Win is a win :cheer:

Tammy with her lack of movement never had a chance in this match and the fact that Maria still had 10 double faults against a player who never really had her under any pressure is a concern. Maria's next match with Razzano will be the exact opposite. Razzano had Vesnina so frustrated because she just kept hitting winners even when Vesnina hit a great shot and that is what won that match.

Both Maria & Razzano will be going for their shots and if it really comes down to the serve that will be a problem for Maria.

She was decent off the ground because the opponent barely offered any resistance. The next match will be a much better gauge, I would say.

Tanasugarn is just a blurb, a big blobby blurb. Pointless match. Maria probably hit the practice courts after this.

Hardly a slaying, but at least Maria won a match.

I was very pleased with Sharapova's footwork. Her forehand looked okay, but the second serve is still crap. Out of 18 second serves, 10 have been DFs. Tammy was so slow and unfit. She made Sharapova look very good.

Nice start, Maria!;):bounce:

Her serve still sucks, 10 DFs.:spit:

Much better than this Auckland shit, but I`m not impressed.
Maria will have to improve vs Razzano, especially her serve.

Ok, her serve wasn't good , but it was windy Maria does have a very high toss, some nerves, but the next round she will win, no doubt about that.

I don't get why her serve isnt much better and more solid by now, we have known it's her main problem for YEARS, what's the matter?
