World No. 2 Sits Down for Interview in Hometown

http://img.youtube.com/vi/FM_dq_z-5GY/0.jpg

Today we're lucky enough to sit down with Victoria Azarenka, the current world No. 2 & Sydney/Australian Open finalist. We'll be talking all about her recent success, her plans for the future, and her goals for this week playing in front of her home crowd in Minsk. She's got a practice session with Alona Bondarenko in a few minutes so we'll try and make this as quick a possible for her convenience.

Q: How would you say the year has started for you?
I would say that thus far I've been the player to almost beat. Obviously Anna Chakvetadze is the top player but other than her I'm the number two in the world and when I'm playing at my best level there isn't anyone who can stop me. I would love to have won both of my finals but I'd rather lose in the final than earlier so I can't be too upset about my luck. Most players would kill to reach a tournament final and to succeed in reaching two of the biggest finals back to back is just outstanding in my book. Other than that I would say my quarterfinal finish last week was almost expected seeing as I was coming off of having played 13 matches in a row and winning 11 of said matches. Plus Justine Henin is an amazingly fit competitor and I'm honored to have lost to her. I'm also glad that Anna lost in the quarters that way she couldn't gain too much ground on me in the rankings.

Q: What has been your biggest accomplishment thus far in the early stages of the season, and what can we expect from you later on this year?
Besides reaching two finals and then a doubles final as well I would say my biggest accomplishment thus far is not having thrown a single temper tantrum on the court. That was one of my biggest weaknesses and so far this season I've been able to keep my attitude in check and really focus on playing great tennis and winning tough/exciting matches. I hope that my good fortune and my good attitude will continue throughout the remainder of this season, but I'm sure I'll loose my head at some point, just you wait and see. My other goals for this season would be to retain my top 10 position and hopefully reach the number 1 spot at some point. I feel that with my play being as good as it is lately there is no reason why I couldn't ascend to the top spot at some point. I would also love to actually win a tournament, preferably a grand slam or a big event like Miami or Indian Wells which are both coming up very soon. But really I just want to keep my game healthy and solid like it is now and if that continues I'm not too worried about eventually lifting a winners trophy instead of a runner-up trophy (they're just too light for my taste).

What are your thoughts about playing here in Minsk in front of your home crowd?
In all honesty I'm still very fatigued and I'm putting a lot more effort into my doubles play here at home, but I hope that I could squeeze out a few singles wins as well. Alona Bondarenko and I have teamed up for the doubles event and I think we stand a pretty good chance at winning the title. The draw will have a lot to do with my success here and hopefully I'll get a bye in the first round so that I can rest a little more before I have to play again.

Thank you very much Victoria for taking time out of your day to talk with us, and we wish you all the best heading into your first matches here in Minsk.

Aravane Rezai (FRA) def. Anne Keothavong (GBR)
6-3 7-6(6)

With freezing temperatures here in Minsk this week, Aravane was fired up throughout this match and earns herself a straight sets win against the slumping Anne Keotavong. Aravane played a very aggressive first set, pushing Anne onto the back foot and it was only until the end of the second set until Anne really started to play. It hasn't been a good season for Anne who will be disappointed with her losing effort today but she showed how good she can be and fought off 4 match points before Aravane could convert it on her fifth. Aravane is looking dangerous in Misnk and she moves on to the second round.

Jelena Jankovic (SRB) def. Andrea Hlavackova (CZE)
6-4 6-3

And Jelena Jankovic wastes little time advancing through to the second round, producing an upset around on court 2. Jelena managed to produce some good baseline tennis, making sure the ball was hit in court and waited for Andrea's erratic errors to follow. Andrea has had a good season so far but today she looked vulnerable and some weaknesses in her game were exposed today out on court with Jelena, she will be looking to get it together for the big tournaments in Indian Wells in Miami in a couple of weeks. Jelena will be thrilled with her performence and if she carries on like this, she also could be a top 20 player in no time.

(7) Maria Kirilenko (RUS) def. Karolina Pliskova (CZE)
6-3 2-6 6-4

Russian seventh seed, Maria Kirilenko produced a good performence today to down talented junior, Karolina Pliskova. The world number 11 served down 7 aces and hit 24 winners to defeat the young Czech in just under 70 minutes. Despite a second set wobble, Maria looks focused and on track here in Misnk, not complaining about the weather and putting a lot of work in on the practice courts. Karolina played a good match but got too far behind at 5-2 in the last set to catch up, Maria finally serving out the match on her second match point.

Madison Brengle (USA) def. Francesca Schiavone (ITA)
7-5 5-7 7-6(12)*
CT Affected

In a frustarting and ugly match for both players, Madison hung in there to grind out the win after saving a total of 4 match points in this 3 hour and 37 minute match. Madison has stuggled for wins throughout season 1, as has Francesca so it was always going to be interesting to see who would advance here today. Francesca tried to spoil Madison's rhythm by playing lots of slices and drops, many of them not successful. Madison was playing some good aggressive tennis but could not stay consistent enough to close out the match in straight sets which took it to a marathon-like third set where Madison held her nerve to advance through to the second round.

6-3 6-7(5) 6-3

It was a shaky match for both players and Ana Ivanovic was not as fortunate as her compatriot as she succumbed to 8th seed Canadian and top ten player, Marie-Eve Pelletier who played some fantastic tennis in the first and third set to advance here today. Both seeded players advance here today and Marie-Eve showed she is planning to rival the top players here this week as she advances through to the second round.

Johanna Larsson (SWE) def. Heidi El Tabakh (CAN)
7-6(5) 6-4

Due to the epic match between Francesca and Madison, the last match on centre court has finished before the third match on court 2!! Johanna played a gutsy tiebrake in the first set to giver herself the upper hand in the match and she didn't look back, closing out the match in two very tight sets. Johanna continues her good form after reaching the semi finals in her home town of Stockholm last week and played a solid match with clear tactics against the interesting player, Heidi El Tabakh. Heidi played some good tennis but couldn't quite match Johanna's power today and also couldn't keep the rally going long enough for Johanna to make an error. Johanna will be looking for a repeat performence or better of last week as she continues her campaign of becoming a top 10 player.

Karolina Sprem (CRO) def. Kim Clijsters (BEL)
6-3 4-6 6-4

Back over on court 2 and Karolina Sprem takes advantage of a wobbly Kim Clijsters, earning her first victory in ART, advancing to the second round here in Minsk. Karolina showed a balance of offence and defense, coming back from 4-0 down in the third set to win 6 games in a row. Kim looked emotionally and mentally frustrated and just could not find the will to close the match out after doing so well to fight back in the second set. Karolina will be pleased with her performence and showed that grit and determination can pay off but she will need to produce performences like these if she wants to challenge the top players and go far in the draw this week. A good, promising win for Karolina.

Caroline Wozniacki (DEN) def. Timea Babos (HUN)
6-3 3-6 6-3

Caroline finally gets a well deserved win at the expence of the young Hungarian, Timea Babos. This was always going to be a tough match for both players and both played well, showing that they can easily be top 30 players but there are a few things in Timea's game which are stopping her from winning matches like these. She can sometimes be a little too passive and Caroline loved some of the short balls that were coming from Timea. Caroline played a decent match and looks to be in very good form this week here in Minsk, also earning her first win of ART. Timea will be disappointed with this result but if she continues to work and improve, she will be a very dangerous player in the future. Caroline was overjoyed to win today and is looking like a threat this week to a lot of the top players.

Maria Sharapova (RUS) def. Elena Dementieva (RUS)
7-6(5) 6-4

A confident straight sets display from Maria Sharapova shows she could be very nearly back to form with a convincing victory here today. She took it to Elena today, not allowing her to match her for power and her groundstrokes were close to perfection. Although Elena gifted her many points today with a total of 24 unforced errors, Maria contemplated this by hitting 19 winners. Elena played a good first set, leading 5-2 but couldn't sustain her momentum and the unforced errors started to creep slowly into her game, Maria took an early lead to 4-0 in the second set and even though Elena fought, it was in vain as Maria closed out the match in just under 80 minutes of play. A good match from the Sydney champion, looking for her second title this season here in the Belarussian capital.

Ajla Tomljanovic (CRO) def. Dominika Cibulkova (SVK)
6-3 7-6(7)

The young Croatian posts a very impressive win here today against an 'injured' Dominika Cibulkova, showing she has a lot of potential in her tennis. It was a very close affair, the match rowling out to an incredible 100 minutes due to Dominika calling the trainer to the court... 4 times. Dominika played well when she needed to, overall saving 7 match points but Ajla was too quick and too crafty for the Slovakian who unfortuantely had no answers to Ajla's winners out there today. Dominika seems to be in a slump of form at the moment and will be looking to improve before the two big American tournaments in a couple of weeks. A great win for Ajla and she moves on to the second round.

Larsson defeats El Tabakh. Next is Bondarenko.

http://www.asbclassic.co.nz/players/Johanna-Larsson/imageBinary/larsson.JPG

Those people who thought Johanna Larsson would have had a bad week after her (unexpected?) loss in Stockholm in Semifinals, weren't satisfied. The young player from Sweden has had a good start in Minsk, defeating Canadian Heidi El Tabakh with the score of 7-6(5) 6-4. A good match from both players, probably both deserved to win but, everybody knows, tennis is sometimes cruel, and Larsson was good enough to take a win over El Tabakh. Her opponent is now the dangerous Alona Bondarenko, the third seed, Johanna showed to a clear hate.
That's what Larsson said after her win against El Tabakh:

Johanna Larsson
I had the desire to start well this week, and so I did! I cannot deny there is still a bit of sadness because of what happened in Stockholm, but lifes goes on, and I had to win in go on in my way for Top 10!
Heidi played a sweet match, with some good shots from both. It's really a pity we had to face each other in the first round! I think I reached my highest moment during the tie-break: no one wanted to lose, but I wanted to win, and at last I won. I've to say the truth: I thought after having loss the first set in this way, Heidi would have fallen down in the second one, but wow! She was quite better!
Now I'm going to face Alona Bondarenko for a place in the Quarterfinals. She already defeated me in Auckland, and I want a revenge! You know what I think about this kind of player, so I'll make the match speak for himself!

Sharapova on the winning track again

http://i54.tinypic.com/6nv9lv.gif

Interviewer - Maria, congratulations on your win today. How does it feel to be back on winning now?

MS - It's good. It's good, it's a nice feeling and you know I didn't play my best tennis today, but I am just happy to get the win over a really tough opponent.

Interviewer - What do you look to improve on over the course of the week?

MS - Everything. Yea, my game is not at its best yet, I just hope to play well by the end and maybe and hopefully win the title.

Interviewer - What were your thoughts when you were down 2-5? Did you panick or?

MS - I didn't panic, I knew Elena was going to choke some time, and thankfully it came at 2-5 down. I was very lucky she double faulted 4 times in a row. I thanked her after the match.

Interviewer - Well, you are playing in Minsk right now. This was your home land before Russia. How does it feel to be back?

MS - It's good, it's great actually. Usually, there are no tennis tournaments in Belarus so it's nice to be back here. It brings back alot of memories and yea, I'm enjoying my stay here.

Interviewer - Your next opponent, 3rd seed Mirjana Lucic. How do you feel?

MS - I'm confident I can win, you know I have 150 points more thana her. Anything can happen.

Interviewer - Last question, you play doubles with good friend, Maria Kirilenko?

MS - I do, and I'm excited. I usually team with Jelena Jankovic, unfortuenately her coach wondered somewhere to a place called Melbourne, so yea, I decided to team with another player, and here we are. We hope to really do well in doubles, because I usually don't anyway. We'll see.

Interviewer - Good luck.

MS - Thanks.

Bondarenko Responds to Larsson's Poor Attitude & Gives Fans Hope for Big Things to Come

http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_U6R4N6aJNLU/Sc5Gt5djJWI/AAAAAAAAByw/Z4N70GzEcfU/s400/alona_bondarenko_with_flowers.jpg

Q: Alona, earlier today Johanna Larsson once again brought up her hatred of you and the fact that she's ready for some revenge.
Is there a question that you wanted to ask or were you just stating a ridiculous fact?

Q: What is your response to what she said?
Well I think it's sad that she can feels like she can simply run to the press whenever she's got a problem with someone and not actually talk to me face-to-face. It's funny to think that she's upset with me because I said she was the weakest player in our Hopman Cup field and I feel it's time for her to let it go. She's obviously shown that she can win, and that she wasn't the weakest so my initial statement otherwise was obviously wrong.

Q: Do you think that she will get her revenge?
She obviously feels that she does, so why not? I think now is her best option to get revenge if she ever wants it. She certainly will not beat me at a major event and never on clay so sure I think she can certainly win tomorrow. She's obviously been practicing more than me lately and I'm still a little tired from my great Australian Open run so I'm not playing anywhere near my top level. I wish her the best of luck and I just look forward to a great match. That's all the fans really want (great tennis), and I feel we can supply them with that.

Q: You seem to be rather passive about the match like you don't really care. What's going on?
Listen I don't hold grudges and I'm not going to let some meaningless quote from an interview upset me and let me lose my focus. I'm going to try my best out there tomorrow, but the cards a simply stacked against me in her favor. Hopefully I can win, but I'm going to take more out of a loss than most people. I'm a great studier of the game and I analyze every aspect of my matches so that I can grow and learn from them. Like I said I haven't been training a lot recently and for me to expect to simply bash her off the court is ridiculous. I can only hope to make it a great match.

Q: So are you optimistic about anything in the future happening for you?
Of course! The clay season is coming up and I hope to dominate the tour seeing as I'm a clay expert and love the clay. I'm also looking forward to my intense training for both Indian Wells and Miami where I hope to add many more points to my ranking and at least (emphasis on the least), retain my top 5 position in the rankings. I'm going to win a tournament soon, I can just feel it!

Thank you Alona for taking time out and talking with us today. Good luck (or not?) with your match against Johanna Larsson.

Dominika lost, but who cares?

Dominika in action. Minsk in danger

In Tuesday she lost. She lost to Croatian girl, Ajla Tomljanovic 3-6 (7)6-7. She presented nice game, especially when we take into account fact that she is still injured. During the match she had to calling her coach 4 times, due to pain in her injured leg.

Originally said by Dominika Cibulkova
Yes, I still fell pain in my leg, but I'm not a barbie doll as other girls, and I tried to fight to the end. Ajla, my opponent, played good, she showed some good forehands, and I have no reason to feel ashamed or something like that.

During this tournament, and the previous one in Stockholm, her injury was the subject of a lot of discussion. Her main rivals in category "Slut of the year", Laura Robson and Maria Sharapova, say her injury is fake.

Originally said by Dominika Cibulkova
Maria Sharapova is frustrated and it's easy to understand she does such things. Without any successes, she probably lost her contracts, because firms are not stupid. They won't gave money to someone who is pathetic, and isn't able to win any important title.

Today she plays her doubles match in the same pair as Laura Robson.

Originally said by Dominika Cibulkova
Really? So her name is Laura? Weird... But it's doesn't matter with whom I play.

Yeap, she plays with Laura Robson. What she thinks about this match?

Originally said by Dominika Cibulkova
First of all... I even don't know how this slut looks like. But as I said few hours ago. I hate her.

Robson's prepared to take Minsk by Storm in Singles!

Today, Laura Robson is geared up to win a couple of singles matches in Minsk--and we got the chance to have an interview with her after her morning routine--just to talk about pretty much everything.

http://news.bbc.co.uk/media/images/46358000/jpg/_46358236_laura.jpg

Interviewer
So, you ready to go to your matches today? How's this week in Minsk been so far for you?

Robson
Yeah--I'm ready to go. Minsk is pretty cold--but you know, you get used to it after a while. I've been really enjoying practicing with some of the nicer players on the tour--I hit with Marie Eve last night--I don't bear any sort of grudge for that close Melbourne match--she's a great person to hang out with. I'm really looking forward to my singles match here.

Interviewer
What about the doubles? I hear theres been a bit of a fight going on on Twitter--care to talk about that more?

Robson
Well, you know....my usual partner is Dinara Safina--and I needed a partner this week for doubles because Dinara is at a different tournament. So I just played with whoever. That happened to be a mistake as I'm playing with that bitch Domifatchick. She's the one who started it on Twitter. That stupid child. At this point...I don't even care about the doubles, because in my mind Domifatchick is the biggest slut alive--I mean did you see the picture on her interview this morning? I think thats completely inappropriate for tennis players. I think the way that she's insulted Masha is so dumb....I mean I wouldn't want to play Masha because I'd be deaf after the match-but she's actually really nice to hang out with off the court. Uhm...I have to go finish warming up before my match--too bad the doubles will be a complete waste of time as Domifatchick will be hung over....

Interviewer
Great, thanks for your time. Hey Domi, Robson serves this up to you, balls in your court now.

Hi everyone, dear fans and my all haters. Your every actions is a proof that I'm biggest star in this tour. Even when I lose I'm on mouth of everyone. Laura Robson's Counterstatement!
Hey Everyone! This year has been a fantastic year on the tour for me! Playing with Dinara was something that was incredibly special. I have reached number 6 in the world in Singles and Doubles! Oh, Domi, Domi....People know I exist outside of the tour, I let my results do the talking....I don't go out and seek attention like sluts like you who sleep around with every male tennis player you can find. I don't care much for you. Oh, and nice effort to blame me for starting this feud...I believe that this would be YOU. It's all your fault. Nobody loves you Domi.

Anna lost. What's wrong with her?

http://www1.pictures.zimbio.com/gi/Anna+Chakvetadze+Kremlin+Cup+Day+Five+0SGt_-gT3aRl.jpg

After bad week in Dubai when Anna lost in QF to Laura Robson (yes, Domi's Laura Robson), this week will be even worse. Even worse, cause losing match in 2nd round doesn't mean anything good. This time she gave her win to Karolina Sprem from Croatia.

Originally said by Anna Chakvetadze
I think we can't say about any tragedy. I chose Minsk cause I wanted to train to technical solution in my game. I hoped I will be able to play some more matches here, but now I'm quite happy. Together with my coach, we decided to change a lot on my game, so I'm still thinking about my game and my progress in positive way.

Here, in Minsk, the main topic of all conversation is not who will win this event, but the conflict between Dominika Cibulkova from Slovakia and Laura Robson who started cooperate in this field with Maria Sharapova.

Originally said by Anna Chakvetadze
I'm little disgusted with what is happening here. I don't want blame anyone about this situation, but I talked with my friend Dominika, and we decided together that she will be the person who stop this conflict. We both know, me and Domi, that Laura won't stop attacked her, so Dominika as more mature person and more smarter will finish this.

Hmm, weird, but... Today Anna plays one more match, in doubles this time. We all have hope she will win at least this match.

Originally said by Anna Chakvetadze
I play with Fran and we together think it will be hard match for us, but we will try to win it

Karolina Sprem (CRO) and Marie-Eve Pelletier (CAN) def. (1) Dominika Cibulkova
6-2 2-6 6-2

In a tough encounter, the match for Dominika and Laura wasn't as bad as they expected it to be but they really did gift it to their opponents today. Dominika was late onto court, 14 minutes to be exact. Marie-Eve was seen complaining to the umpire which shortly followed by laura shouting a word beginning with 'S' to her face. Laura was given a warning and before the match even began, Dominika and Laura were in trouble. Dominika eventually arrived, looking a little jaded. Dominika refused to run in the first set which really wasn't good as Laura's movement is poor and a combination of poor communication and movement lost them the first set. They hit back strong in the second, Karolina missing some easy volleys. But in the third, Karolina and Marie-Eve were too strong playing some very good tennis. Dominika told laura to 'run faster' and laura replied with 's......' yeah you know what. Laura receieved another warning and this time had to forfit the game which was the last game of the set. Dominika refused to shake laura's hand and we feel as though this is not going to be a friendship which lasts......... a great performence from Pelletier and Sprem, a good tournament from them so far

A very dominant display from Timea and Madison. Madison seemed to have shaken off her tough singles loss to deliver a brilliant performence here today. Timea was aggressive off both sides, and really showed the potential she has. It was disappointing for Anne and Kim who played a good first round but they just couldn't replicate that here today, both are having tough seasons in ART. Timea and Madison looked like the prefect team out there today and they will be thrilled with this performence as they go on to face earlier winners Karolina Sprem and Marie-Eve Pelletier in the semi finals.

Interview with Anne: How she has felt about the season, and on defending fellow brit laura Robson

http://www.frigginrandom.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/06/Anne-keothavong.jpg

As we all Know Anne Keothavong has had a poor start to the year and is in a major slump. Her only good result came when she beat cibulkova in Hopman cup this says a lot
Q: Anne how do you feel about your tennis at the moment?
A: I am really dissapointed, I have not been able to play and win matches I think I have lost 4 in a row now and I just cannot seem to get anything going. Its really frustrating especially when I know I can win matches.
Q: Have you been thinking about retirement?
A: I do not really want to because I do enjoy tennis but its difficult when you have no positives.
Q: Have you made any friends on tour?
A: Next...
Q: Is there anyone you do not really like?
A: There is a certain 5 foot 3 inch slovak which irritates me alot. All this crap with Laura is ridiculous. I like laura shes a nice girl and going to be britains next big thing, I guess Cibulkova is jealous of Laura, Who knows really. And also I guess she cannot hold down a man she seems to have new one each week, they seem to be in the pool alot as well which is strange maybe all her men smell.

Well that was a insight into how anne is feeling at the moment.
Watch this space Anne may make some lifechanging decisions in the coming weeks.

Dominika comments disappearance of Venus W. in Doha

From Doha came to Minsk terrible news. One of the most prominent player in tennis history, Venus Williams, has disappeared. Venus, who is slumping this year, lost her first meeting in Doha to Slovak Daniela Hantuchova. As one of ART's reporter wrote, "Venus Williams was reported missing at her hotel in Doha. She hasn't been seen for a 24 hour span" (if you haven't read: http://www.tennisforum.com/showpost.php?p=19031872&postcount=152]) We asked the only person which was mentioned in this articles, Dominika Cibulkova what she is thinking about this.

http://www.sportressofblogitude.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/08/dominika9.jpg
Dominika during the interview

Originally said by Dominika Cibulkova
Is it true? I'm really shocked. Maybe she tries escape from reporters after disaster game in this season? I don't know

Reporter
You were mentioned in this article as a person who has something to do with this crime

Originally said by Dominika Cibulkova
OMG :help: It's a nonsense of course. I'm curious who sponsored this article? I have supposition that the coach of Laura and Venus, they have the same coach, could have something common with this "news".

Reporter
So what did happen there in Doha?

Originally said by Dominika Cibulkova
I'm not Holy Ghost, and I don't know. Maybe she run away from the city after her losses. Maybe she feel stupid after playing with this horrible something. Or maybe she started a course of needlework, cause I heard her carrier as designer is over. Who knows? But I have to finish now, I have next beauty treatment to do. Bye

Larsson wins, Tiredness advances.

http://farm2.static.flickr.com/1304/4678480645_4cd4a7027d.jpg

Sometimes in your life you can only say "Wow, I didn't expect this". Well, probably nobody expected young Johanna Larsson reaching her second semifinal in a row, after her good run in Stockholm. Larsson, after having defeated El Tabakh in the first round, went on winning matches on matches and, now, another semifinal arrived, this time in Minsk. The Swedish player really shocked medias by defeating Alona Bondarenko in two hard sets: 7-6(4) 6-4 in a match no one thought Larsson could win.
So, we arrived at tonight. Johanna is struggling in every of her matches, but she had another good win against Aravane Rezai in three sets: the first one was dominated by the French player who only left two games to Johanna; two games were left by Larsson in the second set, and in the third and decisive set Larsson was good enough to win with the final score of 2-6 6-2 6-4.
But, as every tennis player in the world, Larsson suffers tiredness. She's playing almost every day and always in hard and long matches, so what will happen with Ajla Tomjlanovic, her last opponent to reach the final?
Johanna said after the match:

Interviewer
Hi Johanna! How do you feel after these two, long matches which allowed you to reach the semifinal here in Minsk?

Johanna Larsson
I'm so happy! This is the second semifinal for me, this season is starting really well! In these two days I've played a good tennis, and my results show it very well!
When I ended my match against Bondarenko, I thought it couldn't be real! And the reason is very simple. Even if I've always said I didn't and I still don't like Alona as a player (well, she said about me some... not sweet words), I really appreciate her as player: she never gives up, she fights for every point and yesterday this first impression was confirmed by the match!
Tonight, I faced Aravane Rezai, a dangerous and tricky opponent who was with no doubt the favourite to win this match. And, maybe, after the first set this prevision seemed to be right!

Interviewer
What happened then?

Johanna Larsson
You've to believe me... I don't really know! In the second set I played very well, leaving my opponent the same number of games she left me in the previous set! And in the third set it was a battle in which no one seemed to could be the winner. But at last I did it!

Interviewer
Your next opponent is Tomjlanovic, and there are doubles, too!

Johanna Larsson
She's undoubtly one of the best players left, so this is going to be another hard match. I think I could do something good, but now I'm really tired... of course I want to win, but all these matches are taking away my energies.
And yes, there are also doubles with my great friend Andrea Hlavackova! I hope to do well there, too! Oh, my match will start soon! I've to go now!

Robson blames loss on Cibulkova

http://static.indianexpress.com/m-images/Mon%20May%2031%202010,%2012:35%20hrs/M_Id_155422_Laura_robson.jpg

Today, Laura Robson lost to Ajla Tomljanovic in a tight match yesterday--one that she almost overcame an incredibly tight second set to win. According to the interview Laura Robson had something to say about the loss...

Interviewer
So, what happened today?

Robson
Well, I couldn't move at all because You-Know-Who stepped on my foot, hit me on the wrist with a racket yesterday during the doubles so I really wasn't able to move or strike the ball at all that well today. Although Ana did play well, it really was a match that I should have won.

Interviewer
Did you notice Dominika in the Players box cheering every mistake that you made?

Robson
Yeah. That threw me off too...she really is being quite annoying about this entire thing. I grow weary of her antics because they are so childish. Otherwise it's been a good week here in Minsk and I wish Ana the best of luck as she goes onto her quest for the title. I'd tab her to be a big winner here this week--she certainly deserves it because of all of her hard work.

Interviewer
Did you hear about Venus Williams disappearing? Do you guys have the same coach?

Robson
Why would we have the same coach? It's quite tragic that Venus has disappeared in Doha--its quite scary when something like this happens. We'll see what the conclusion of the story is.

Andrea Hlavackova (CZE) and Johanna Larsson (SWE) def. (3) Victoria Azarenka (BLR) and Alona Bondarenko (UKR)
7-5 5-7 6-2

Vika and Alona had the match in their hands, leading 5-3 in the first set with Alona serving for the set. Unfortunately a total of 3 double faults, cost them the lead and failed to win another game until 3-0 down in the second. They managed to fight to find themselves in the same position in the first set but this time Vika couldn't serve it out and the match stood at 5-5. Both teams fought hard and homegirl Vika and partner Alona managed to level the match. Then the team of Andrea Hlavackova and Johanna Larsson took their game to a new level and closed the match out on the first match point. A convincing performence from the Czech-Swedish pair who reach their first semi final together.

7-5 6-4

And the seeds are falling like flies here in Minsk, Anna Chakvetadze, the world number 1 in both singles and doubles has fought hard this week to give a good account of herself but she could not do enough today with partner Francesca Schiavone to scrape through this match. Aravane and Karolina looked completely comfortable today, breaking their opponents immediately in the second set. It was a close match but the French-Czech pairing had a little more skill to pull through today.

Then Andrea and Johanna showed us the form that got them here, fighting back to level the set at 5-5 but Aravane and Karolina showed us their fighting spirit to battle and win 2 games that lasted 25 minutes in total, finally winning the second set 7-5 and advancing through to the final where they will face the number 4 seeds, Madison Brengle and Timea Babos for the Minsk Title.

Even though Jelena has had a very good tournament, she can not help but be disappointed with this semi final performence, almost clinching victory against the very talented Karolina Sprem. Jelena led in both sets but it was the experience of Karolina and her fighting spirit which delayed Jankovic the chance to reach her first final. Karolina played another great match and really deserves her place in the final where she will face either Johanna Larsson or Ajla Tomljanovic, where someone will get their first title in the ART tour so far.

So, it will not be an all Croatian final as Johanna Larsson plays out her skin to advance to the final, showing the perfect balance between offense and defense, really surprising the young Croatian. Ajla has played to near perfect throughout the tournament but Johanna built on her form to better her performence from last week where she reached the semi finals of the Nordic Light Open in Sweden. Johanna will have to replicate this performence today if she wants to get her hands on the trophy here in Minsk where another Croatian stands in her way, Karolina Sprem. Who will win their first title in the ART tour??

It was a much tougher match than what the scoreline suggests but Madison and Timea played out of their skin today to defeat the team of Aravane Rezai and Karolina Pliskova in straight sets. Even though the match almost lasted for 2 hours, Madison and Timea looked completely in control from the beginning, racing to a 5-2 lead and even though they lost the next 2 games, they looked completely comfortable in their first final, really showing how they could be a dominant force on the ART tour. It was a gutsy performence from the young Czech and the talented Frenchwoman but ultimately it was not enough to stop the on-form duo of Madison Brengle and Timea Babos. A hard fought battle and a well earned victory.

Karolina Sprem (CRO) def. Johanna Larsson (SWE)
6-3 3-6 6-4

Both players have had an amazing week but today it came down to who could hold their nerve and that person was Karolina Sprem. Her mental attitude was second to none today, really focusing on every point, not allowing Johanna to break her down and find a rythm. Both ladies played an amazing set each and the last set came to 4-4 with Johanna crumbling on the big points, not being able to convert on her 1 of her 4 game points in the ninth game of the decider. With this break sealed, Karolina served a love game out for the match, finally breaking Johanna's resistance with 3 aces and a jaw-dropping forehand drive volley into Johanna's backhand corner. Johanna didn't look too disappointed afterwards, she is playing some of the best tennis of the season now and it'll be interesting to see where she can go from here. Karolina is a player to watch out for, she is solid in all areas and gives nothing away to any of her opponents, she is the Minsk champion and potentially a grand slam winner down the line if she keeps on improving and keeping in form like this week.
