This is my 1st Lucie thread so I hope it can bring some luck compared to the people who have tried before :)

Here is her section of the draw

Lucie Safarova CZE (31)
v
Shuai Zhang CHN

Klara Zakopalova CZE
v
Melanie Oudin USA

Bojana Jovanovski SRB
v
Kai-Chen Chang TPE

Sybille Bammer AUT
v
Vera Zvonareva RUS (2)

She has never played Zhang before, but she has a 2-0 losing record to Zakopalova who is potentially her 2nd round match, so she will hope that Oudin will win that match.

Good Luck Lucie :D

It's a good first round, she should win it. But she probably wont  2nd round is tough, I think it'll be Zakopalova who she has the game to beat if she plays well and does what her new coach has been working on. If it's Oudin it's still tough but also more winnable as she has the winning record. 3rd round is what I think we should hope for here.

Also in answer to your question from the cheering thread, she usually plays doubles at slams but I don't know if she will here

Hmmmm... Not bad. Actually pretty solid. Opponents that aren't too difficult but also not so below Lucie that she plays really down.

As always Lucie should win the first round but we've said that to death and it rarely happens. Zakopalova is an unknown quantity as you never know what you get from her although undoubtedly will be very tough for a second round.
Really Lucie should make the third round, and if she faces Zvonareva it might get her geared up for a top player scalp... :lick:

Lucie is in doubles, play with Cirstea against Borwell and Pelletier :yeah: another match I get to see and with someone I like too  not like when she played with Wozniak who couldn't volley for her life :tape:

She can play double so it seems that her injury is not serious, it is a good news.

Lucie won the first set 7-5. She converted on her only break point whereas Zhang was 0/3. The winners/unforced errors statistics are messed up on the scoreboard though.

Lost the second set 6-4. On serve in the third, 2-1. Now up a break, 3-1.

She won, 7-5 4-6 6-1. Up and down as always, I suppose.

Nice to see her pull through in the end :)
2nd round vs Zakopalova or Oudin.

Solid win over a tricky opponent. Well done Lucie :yeah:

Zhang played so well..she barely made an error in the first two sets, lucie was lucky to win the first. At 4-4 in the 2nd at 30-30 lucie had an obvious ace called a fault...that was the reason she lost that set. She wasn't happy at all. But savind 3 break points at 1-1 in the 3rd gave her confidence and all of a sudden she remembered how to return serve. Her coach was very supportive from the sideline which helped...and she didn't seem too affected by the leg but it was strapped. We'll see how it pulls up. But I was happy with her 3rd set form.

Btw zakopalova next...will be tough, she played well today.

Thanks for the report, goes some way to explaining the scoreline which when I saw wasn't that impressed. I know she hasn't won a grand slam match outside of the French for ages, so thats an achievement; but still.
Anyway let's hope Lucie raises her game from the start against a dangrous opponent, and if not then win in three sets again!

She didn't play last week and rested some days for injury, so she may be a little bit rusty and nervous. She just need a match to warm up, I expect she do better next round.

Yes indeed you're right, no matter what the score it's a win. Lucie did have that injury strain before aswell, so all in all perhaps not too bad. ;)
Anyhoo, Lucie has another grandslam win in doubles, so she's keeping up the consistency there! Lucie and Sorana won 5-7, 6-2, 6-2 against Borwell/Pelletier. :yeah:

Lucie's return is much better and she hit some moonball and high top spin forehand, this change is very great for her.

I think every match Lucie played this year has been three sets hasn't it? Included doubles yesterday. Seems like shes trying pretty hard to lose against Zakapalova, but looks like Lucie just broke her when she was serving for the match. Cmon Lucie, hopefully she can pull it out!!

Thankfully Lucie did pull it out, beating Zakopalova 6-3, 6-7(2), 7-5. :yeah: That match will not go down as a classic though. :tape:

It was torture to watch and Lucie is fortunate that the Kookie side of Zakopalova was on display so that she could never count herself out of the match. At the very least she seemed to be more aggressive towards the end and with some donations got over the finishing line.

Back to back grand slam wins though, which means she actually made the round we predicted her to. I doubt Zvonareva's quaking in her boots right now though.

Woo, good to see Lucie pulled through to make the third round!

Do your best against Vera, it's gonna be tough :armed:

Nice win by Lucie. :) Glad to see she is winning grand slam matches playing at a level not near her best sine for the past couple years she has failed in the first or second round. Granted, I'd rather her play well to win these matches, but her mental game is looking sharp. Zvonareva will be tough, but they're friends and Lucie knows her game well from playing doubles with her probably. So we'll see! :)

There is a picture on getty images of lucie reacting to a line call, and i rarely saw pictures of Lucie looking angry against umpire  Must have been some really horrible calls.

How was the handshake?
Was tomas there :D ?

So how are your sunburns David :p ?

She got a horrible call at 2-4 in the TB..it was so far out and her coach was on a rage in the box  and she got a bunch of other bad calls too. But oh well

My sunburn has turned to tan so I'm very dark now :p and no tomas wasn't there but his coach was.

Oh and the handshake was ok...but zakopalova was real angry so she was quick to leave.

Zvonareva 6-3, 4-2* Safarova
Lucie was a bit flat in that opening set and making too many errors.

Tomas is here this time :)

Lucie lost 3 and 6, but the score was so close in the second set tb. Clearly she had chances to take that set. I didn't see it, but it must have been nerve-wracking to watch.

I saw the whole match, and I was really pleased. In the first set she was not playing well. In the second she fought off a bunch of break points but was down 2-4 before she got back to 4-4. Vera served for it at 5-4 and 6-5 but Lucie played well and broke back. In the tiebreak both played great tennis and Lucie had two (?) set points but Vera held her off. Her serving was not too good and her net play was a bit shaky, but her groundstrokes were very good. What really excited me is how Lucie played towards the end. It wasn't like she was just playing her streaky, amazing tennis that we see rarely and for brief moments. She was playing great but also playing within herself (not going for those big winners but hitting consistently big shots). I would like to see some more spin on her backhand though.

Still, good tournament and she should be pleased with the match. This could be a good year for Lucie. :)

So dissapointing she couldn't win that tiebreak. Seems like she was playing well but Zvonareva was just too solid.

My sunburn has turned to tan so I'm very dark now :pYou and Lucie both by the looks - you can see she has tan lines from a singlet on her back. You gotta Slip Slop Slap in that harsh Australian sun :)

This must be a great year for Lucie, very impressive change, the returning and the top spin forehand. She just need more time with the new coach.

Exactly how I feel. This has been a good major -- she won a couple matches, including one where she didn't play very well, and she played quite well -- serve and a few random moments aside (that overhead-volley combo :help::lol:) -- today. She has improved in ways that feel solid, not fleeting. I'm hoping for a good year as well.

I loved it when Zvonareva challenged the call on a blistering backhand winner and shot spot revealed it to be perfect bullseye on the back and side lines. Lucie seemed to enjoy that.

her 2nd serve and easy put away winners were what let her down. if she improves this she could become top 10.

Being at that match was a bit :o but so much credit to Lucie's fight...she really fought so hard in that 2nd set and was really taking it to Zvonareva in the rallies consistently point after point. To be able to do that with world number 2 is pretty good, and a good sign for the year. She had a big chance to take it to 3, but a little bit of luck went Zvonareva's way...it's not like Lucie just gave it to her. She really fought for it and she nearly got it. I was thinking, this year alone Lucie has broken serve when her opponent served for the match 7 times. 4 matches her opponent has served for the match, 2 of them she's won and 2 of them she's just lost. That's pretty good fighting, and the signs are definitely good for this year.

Uploading my trillions of photos now

She will play Paris Indoor but she may not be the seed since Petra' s ranking passeed Lucie's after Brisbane...Let us hope one seed player will withdraw and Lucie can be the seed.
