Kim you should thrown in a burlap bag and beaten with birch twigs until you holler uncle for that hot smoking mess of a match.

Even in the second set Li was doing her level best to give it back to you but you just would not have it - levels of sucking that deserve some kind of award.

Utter madness.

Congrats to Li for getting it done in the end, but Kim, if you wanted to dampen AO expectations, then consider this a job thoroughly well done :sobbing:

This is true, Clijsters is much better and at home on the faster North American hardcourts, the slower Australian courts only take her so far.

Kim didn't tank it. Did you see how pissed off she was getting? She wanted this match. This also I think is the first final she's lost since her return.

Blowing a huge lead isn't far from her norm. Her game really relies on momentum, positive and negative.

Dinara's ears must be perking up realizing that she isn't unbeatable. Everyone else's ears should be perking up too with no clear favorite.

Well Clijsters now can take some pressure off herself going into AO, but she is still the favorite, because no one has been playing that well going into the AO. She's 30 points behind or something from Vera's Number 2 ranking and has very little to defend in Melbourne.

I think this might motivate her to do a little better in Melbourne but its really up to her brain and her serve. Cut the double faults and concentrate and you'll have success.

Well that part is so true. Today was a great example. When her mind goes wondering she just starts bashing her forehand, so she then hits a few more errors. Then when it comes time for her to play solidly, she can't. She's lost her rhythm and confidence can't stop the flood of errors. :tape:

What a genius strategy of Na Li team! With just two chocolates they corrupt ball boy to send fake blackmail message "Jada is kidnapped... You know what to do NOW" at 0-5 exchange pause in 1st set  And it works very well!

Just kidding... but Clijsters collapse since 5-0 30-15 is so dramatic and strange. Despite she is in Ana 1/8 of draw I really hope that with hers health is everything OK.

Best tankjob ever.

First Kimmie showed who's the boss by going 5-0

After that there was no more point that needed to be made so it was time to wind down and take the level down a notch or three and save energy for Melbourne, regardless of what her opponent's level was at.

Interesting. Well with a SF from last years AO to defend, Li Na certainly needed the points! As for Kim, could be the 'Petrova' match out of the way .. who knows. Kim's winner odds only slightly longer; just saying, before everyone starts the band waggon and writes up Kim's tennis obituary.

About time Na won a big one. Well deserved! She can hit anyone off the court and anyone who plays her knows that. They both started playing great tennis but Kim was just a little better and Na lost her confidence after losing the first two games that is why she went down 5-0. Na started to serve well towards the end and that helped. Brilliant challenges from Na - 100% success. After that terrible misjudgement by Na with the loopy ball from Kim which looked like it was going out but was in by a mile I thought Kim was going to get lucky - it was great to see the way Na reacted to that - such a nice smile. It was good to see Kim lose her cool for a change. Na is such a sweet girl.

Predicted it last night.

On a mid-paced high bouncing court, Kim gives Na way too much time to set up her shots. Her usual bh cc- bh cc- bh cc-no change of pace-yawn pattern doesn't work against Na since Na has a better backhand when its on (and when she has time). Once Na regrouped and started playing freely, she absolutely thrived on Kim's cc backhand patterns.

Kim might be amazingly good on faster hardcourts (or just lucky that her never changing play style just suits that surface), but on these slower surfaces, there are some payers who can beat her.

I watch the match and he is right. Its the players that have change its to much spin in the shots if the ball is slowed down it gives kim to much time to do what ever she wants with the ball. For some reason serena dont play light out tennis anymore she like to spin her shot alot and serve big thank god for her serve.

Kim just played like shit. She was garbage in 80% of the match. Her D game will get her through against a lot of opponents, but not against a player like Na who can really bring it. Kim was just going through the motions with a lot of shots and it just looked like she wasn't being as focused as she normally has been in finals. Tons of horrendous shots by Kim for the low light reel.

Kim just played like shit.

No, that's pretty much her normal level. Rewatch the USO last year. She looks good against muggy, nervous opponents, but when someone start playing loose with flat, aggressive shots, taking the ball early on the rise, she retreats behind the baseline and either pushes or makes errors when trying to attack, because attacking is second nature to her, she's an instinctual retriever and her attacking game, especially forehand, falls apart even under minimal pressure. She happens to be lucky playing in an era of mentally weak players or topspin specialists where she can grind out wins, but hopefully more and more players can step up and expose her (still) weak mentality, one dimensional game and vulnerability to aggressive tennis.

Maybe Kimberly did that on purpose to get the pressure off her, because 99% of people are pickin Kimberly to win in Melbourne, and we all know how she crumbles under pressure

Ok i guess this must have been a tank as well http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N5Y_Rr5d3jI why do people kid them selfs? Li when on is a dam fine player and her backhand is better then kims for the most part.

An obvious tank. She didn't even run some balls in the second set.All these clever people who say Kim's gameplan was to go 5-0 up then lose the match to relieve pressure on herself! Of course she got to a tie-break then tanked the tie-break as well. Na played too well and Kim played well in parts but she could not react to the pressure Na out her under and she started to lose her footwork and timing. I have seen her do it many times before. If it had been a slam final she probably would have found a way to come back but for this day she just was not good enough!

I could've sworn the first posters meant Kim was 5-0 up in the tiebreak and then lost the first set. But subsequent posters kept clarifying the extent of the choke. Wow.

But good to see Li Na work through her self-doubt enough to come back and close out a top-tier match. Hope she maintains -- or even improves on -- this form. Would be nice to have her as AO Champ.

Li was nervous from the start but as the match progressed she got more and more confident.Kim was surprised by the depth of the chinese s shots and her speed around the court.Na Li beat Kim at her own game of running down balls and making her opponents hit that extra shot. This was a solid match for Li especially in the second set,she outplayed Kim and the belgian was not expecting this kind of play.I dont think this plexi surface is really Kim surface, she will struggle in Melbourne because of expectation on a surface she is not really good at.I think Henin will do better at the AO11 than Kim,JJ will stop Kim in her tracks.I am predicting a QTRS loss to Jankovic believe it or not.

Another major drop in from mid-match from Clijsters.

First 5 games hitting a succession of crosscourt FH winners, high 1st serve percentage, good returning.

2 points from getting a bagel and then it all goes horribly wrong. Li was not even having one of her great days off the ground Her best serve, the slice in the AD court, was not even working.

The only noticeable thing I could pick on that Li did different was start to hit her FHDTL with more venom and earlier in the rally. It allowed her to get up in the forecourt for some easy putaways.

Most bizarro match I have seen in quite some time.
Kim was stunning in the first 5 games and it was obvious that Na wasn't going to be able to get in the match. Just terrible choke after that...rushing, no footwork, serve and forehand went away, etc.,

On the positive side, Kim had some good match-play this week, she should be ready for whatever comes at her in Melbourne, hopefully the choke is out of the way, and I am happy for Na, her biggest title yet I believe? She showed nerves of steel in the match and kept the ball in court at times when in the past she would have 'errored' herself out of it. Good to see her use her brain.

Clijsters : "Obviously I'm disappointed ... Even more than the defeat, it's the bad feelings that I had today on the court who disappoint me ... I didn't feel the ball as well as I wanted. I just held my shots, I didn't find the usual depth, I didn't serve well and I lacked aggressiveness in my shots.
Then she quickly took advantage during rallies. "I tried to fight but I could not play the way I wanted and I'm frustrated myself."
"Now I can't wait to go back on the practice courts and improve everything. And I can't wait to play my first round in Melbourne".

So it's pretty clear she didn't tank :wavey:

Just watched the match. Clijsters was really opting for angled sort of rallies that spread both of them around the court but with a lot of pace, which is not a good thing to do against Na. Instead of pinning her on the back of the baseline with deep, central shots she was giving Li so much rhythm.

Also with Clijsters these days, there's always 1 particular shot of hers that seems to be off in a match. Her BH was more scrappy in her first couple of matches, but today her FH was inconsistent. An important thing to do against Kim if you want to beat her is finding out the stability of her shots and really exploit the weaker shot of the two, Na did that well today.

Overall quite poor performance from Clijsters, almost the opposite of her QF where she was by far the most impressive this week. Don't think it's nice to head into the AO like that though, having choked a 5-0 lead. Congrats Na!

I love how one single match can completely change people's expectations.

A day or two ago, it was: "OMG, Clijsters is so much better than everyone else, she wins everything, who will prevent her from winning the AO!!1!"
Now, it's: "Clijsters is a mug, the AO is clearly wide open!!1!"

Kim didn't try in the second set for saving energy:unsure:
Clijsters spent more energy trying to keep the ball in play as long as possible on MP than Gulbis did in the entire second set against Gilles Simon. Now THAT was a "tank". People are using this word much too liberally.

Yeah she was really tanking, up 5-love and all .

Noooooooooooo
Kim wanted to show she was still the GOAT and that if she tried, she could beat Na 6-0 6-0 :rocker2:
then she decided to tank because Na is her BFF and because it's a MM tournament, that's why she never goes to Beijing, she is afraid to beat by accident her friend NaNa

Saint Kimberly is so amazing !

Gulbis is shit though. More likely he lost because of that rather than a tank.

I can't beleive Kim would let a 5-0 lead go voluntarily!

The thing about Na Li is, you need to finish her off as soon as you can! Her game can click at any point!

I take it you didn't see the match. Gulbis won a whopping THREE points in the entire 2nd set, and one of those was on a DF from Simon. Gulbis had a chance to serve out the 1st set, choked massively, got into an argument with the umpire about bad line calls a bit later, lost the TB badly, and then he just gave up. Very unprofessional. He should have been fined for lack of effort. There is absolutely no comparison between how he behaved in that match and what happened to Clijsters against Li.

On the subject of fans excusing their fav. players loss as tanking, an interesting example is when Caro beat Na at Hong Kong Caro fans were happy, some said (rightly) that it was an exho,so not that important. I don't think anyone accused Na of tanking, and most saw it as a good sign for Caro, then, the loss to Bepa, and some come out with the Tank talk. Now we have writings of the great Jadaparader doing the tank job. We are strange buggers aren't we:confused:

It's very easy, after she was up 5-0, she played a very bad match. No excuses for that. So congrats Li Na! You were the better player and deserved to win :)

First round AO against Dinara... not an easy start...
I don't like it because I also like Dinara.
Just hope it will be a nice and good match to watch! :)

And atleast she didn't peak to early
Because I'm still not impressed with the way she's playing at the moment.

This just proves that Kim can't manage opponents that play reasonably solid tennis and don't mentally collapse at the drop of a hat.

Na didn't even play that well. She made 30+ unforced errors, but the key difference between her and Kim's earlier opponents was that she hung in there, and played solidly when it mattered. Even when she hit that second serve that bounced before the net when serving for a 5-2 lead, she slowed down, regrouped, remained calm and went on to win that game.

Kim showed in that match, once again, that she severely lacks a B game. When she got down, she just camped at the baseline, defended, defended, defended and when she actually got into an aggressive position blatantly attempted to ball bash Na off the court, a tactic which failed dismally, as Na loves to be fed pace. Her inconsistent serving was also exposed, and she literally refused to budge off the baseline. She didn't try anything different when her A game went off the boil, she just continued to play the game that had got her into the losing position and hit as hard as she could.

Overall an impressive match from Li, who proved that she is a more mature player, mentally and game wise than she once was. She impressed me.

But it's good that Kim is now regarded by Venustards as a talentless hack with poor skills and that her accomplishments are all due to luck. We can now without reservation describe Venus as "the mother or all brainless ballbashers" since it is she who started this "tennis" game of closing one's eye and hitting hard while lacking even basic tennis skills like forehand. Fine. Two can play this TF game. In fact why not add her sister to this new hyperbolic Cleycourter-invented TF standard that Venus and Serenatards have declared as a religion? What real talent does Serena have other than being herself: a one dimensional female bicep whose footwork is completely irrelevant and redundant to her shotmaking which btw amouts to nothing more than high-percentage-zero-precision ballbashing anyway!

I agree with everything about Na Li. She comes off as a mature and calm player on court to me too. I like to listen to her press conferences as well. :D

About Clijsters I think she had quite a bad day and she just needs more matches. I'm not sure what kind of B-game you would expect her to toy around with... Serve and volley?

Well, moving forward when given the opportunity to play aggressively would've been a nice change. Clijsters closing in on net could've been intimidating and distracting to Na, causing her to rush her shots or feel pressured, as opposed to Kim running left to right, back and forth on the baseline.

Kim can't serve, neither can she volley. That's kinda the point. She has very little natural talent, her strokes aren't fluid, especially the lasso-whip FH follow through, which is the ugliest shot I have ever seen apart from Seles' double fisted FH. She has stamina, fitness, movement and athletecism, but that isn't talent, her shots lack imagination and flair and they don't come intuitively to her. She also needs to be ultra confident to attack as we have seen under pressure, she retreats behind the baseline and keeps the ball in play. Kim Clijsters is an opportunist, but her inflated achievements will go down in history books alongside true greats just the same.

I see Truth hurts? What truth? Since when is the ranting and raving of loser-tards on messageboards "truth"? Kim is a veteran of more than ten years on the tour. You're not gonna convince anyone that is not a looney or a hater that she's just lucky and not really talented. People and have had plenty of opportunity in the past to say that if that had been even remotely true (after all she's been on the tour for a full dozen years now) So excuse me if I'm not holding my breath that you KBlade's and Claycourter's new "Kim theory" is gonna replace the firmly established consensus that her tennis skills are second to none and that she was and remains a fully fledged member of the very top (top 4) of the WTA elite for the past decade and counting.

Wow, Kim is a veteran of more than 10 years on tour? How is that relevant? Patty Schnyder has been on tour for longer than that, does that make her an all time great? No. I see you always manage to form nice arguements when you're cornered, "Loser-tards" "Venus Tards". Not everyone that can see Kim for what she really is, is a Venus Tard. And the bolded section, Please don't make me laugh. Kim is no-where the top four of the WTA elite for the past 10 years, she's probably Top 10 at the most. Serena, Venus, Justine and probably Hingis fill those spots. Then Sharapova, and Davenport who have proven that they can win slams off one surface, and against formidable competition. Unlike Clijster's who struggled against the top players of her generation, managed to win one slam in like 5 tries, and then comes back in 2009 to a depleted field and records better results than her entire first career in the first 18 months. If Kim is an all time great, she needs to find a way to win matches like the one she lost against Na. How can you argue that Kim has a B game? We've seen it against Petrova, at the entire US Open and now Na. When Kim's A game abandons her, she can do nothing but sit on the baseline and retrieve. She refuses to do anything differently. Anyone who plays reasonably solid tennis and can keep their heads have more than a fair chance of taking her down. Unfortunately, this very rarely happens given the current state of the tour. Form a real argument without your pathetic little childish insults and try again.

I think it's hard to move forward if you miss your offensive shots. Kim is a baseliner. When playing good, she comes in and hits the drive volleys. When playing bad, I don't know if it's a good idea for her to come in, other than to surprise on occasion.

Great, great comeback from Na though to be able to win the 1st set. It was a really solid victory, she was the deservant winner this week! :bounce:

Yeah, well, surely some-one else would have realized, "Well, I can't out hit her, and playing defensively doesn't seem to be working for me, so maybe I should try and mix it up a little, and try to throw out her rhythm?" It clearly wasn't that obvious. Kim could've sliced, came in, put up a high ball every now and again because asian players thrive on pace and flat shots, but she just stayed at the baseline, and it ultimately cost her.
