An exceptional gesture from these top players, esp Sam Stosur and Pat Rafter.

Losing a match in tennis seems so trivial compared to people who have lost everything - houses, possessions, loved ones.

Would anyone notice Sam's presence or absence. In the hit for Haiti, she could have easily been replaced with a wall. Hopefully, in front of the home crowd, she can be more expressive.

That's a bit mean.
It's her home country, her home state.

It's a great gesture and hopefully they raise a lot of money throughout the entire tournament.

And I really, really like Roger but hopefully it will not come across as if he's the mastermind behing that charity exhibition.

Tennis stars Rally for Relief to help flood victims
Thursday, 13 January, 2011
By Tennis Australia

Tennis superstars Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal, Novak Djokovic, Kim Clijsters, Sam Stosur, and friends will gather on Sunday afternoon in Melbourne for a special exhibition to raise money for the victims of Australia's flood disaster.

Federer, Nadal, Djokovic, Lleyton Hewitt, Stosur, Clijsters and Pat Rafter headline a glittering list of tennis superstars who will put aside their Australian Open preparations for the Rally for Relief tennis match at Rod Laver Arena on Sunday at 2pm

Many in the international tennis fraternity have been horrified by the disaster.

"Along with many of the other players I was moved by the devastation caused by the floods in Australia," Federer said today. "We just wanted to do something to help aid the recovery because we know there are thousands of Australians who will continue to suffer as a result of this disaster."

"This is a terrible tragedy, not only the loss of life but the destruction of people's homes," Nadal said. "I am pleased to be able to contribute in some way to help bring it to the attention of the world and raise some money for the victims in the process."

"As an Australian I cannot help but be touched by such an awful turn of events. It is a disaster on a massive scale," Hewitt explained. "Australians are incredible at pulling together in times of crisis and this is certainly one of those times. If the tennis community can also help play a role in the recovery then we should, both in Australia and internationally. I just think at a time like this it is a case of getting all hands on deck."

Queenslanders Pat Rafter and Sam Stosur officially announced the Rally for Relief at the Medibank International Sydney as a key plank in a major fundraising campaign by the entire international tennis community.

"The plight of the flood victims has well and truly struck a chord with the entire tennis fraternity," Rafter said. "As a Queenslander I am really heartened by the concern and the keenness from our sport to get in and do something to ease the suffering. I know on the scale of things our contribution is only a small one, but it is good to be able to help out."

Sam Stosur said she was touched by the many expressions of concern for the flood victims from her fellow tennis professionals, officials, administrators, coaches and fans. Her own family was displaced by floods in the 1980s and she is keen to contribute to a big fundraising effort.

"A lot of us just want to make some sort of contribution. It breaks my heart to see what is happening to thousands of people in these floods. I am rapt that the biggest names in our sport are so keen to focus on this despite the fact that the Australian Open starts the next day."

Stosur is already donating $100 for every ace she serves this summer.

Players in lead up events in Brisbane, Sydney, Hobart, Adelaide, Perth and Kooyong have all been inquiring as to how they can help the flood -ravaged communities and pledging money and assistance.

Tennis Australia will co-ordinate the tennis community's fundraising effort which will run throughout Australian Open 2011. The campaign includes:

* Sunday afternoon's Rally for Flood Relief
* A gold coin donation at Saturday's Kids Tennis Day
* A special "Shirt off their backs" ongoing auction of autographed player apparel belonging to some of the biggest names in the sport
* An ATP and WTA pledge of $10 for every ace served by players at the Brisbane International, Medibank International Sydney, Moorilla International in Hobart and the Australian Open.

Tickets are $20 for entry to Rod Laver Arena.

Tickets will be available through Ticketek from 3:00pm today at www.ticketek.com.au.

Tickets will also be available from the Melbourne Park and Fed Square Box Offices until 5.00 pm today, from 9:00 am 5:00 pm Friday and Saturday, and from 9:00 am on Sunday.

All proceeds will go to flood relief across the nation.

1. She can organize the charity event from the back of the house, no need to go out there and interact with the public. Many people organize charity events and have other more personable people in the front for the show. However, when people come to watch an exhibition, charity or not, they want to be entertained. Unfortunately, for Sam, her "spectacular" play ain't going to cut it. If it was just about the charity, no need to have the dog and pony show. Just create a commercial asking people to donate.

2. You stupidly assume, that I have never done anything for charity. Well, wrong!

Reetard,

Don't go there, because people can throw Venus under that bus you are driving. Venus never participates in these types of things, unless its for the OWL foundation, or some other charity event she is involved with. Lets just be happy they have who they have. Lets hope that the people they have put on some nice entertainment, because at these things, it is never about the tennis.

Yeah, I heard 5% of her winnings from the Australian season.

HOBART, Australia - Last year, she donated a portion of her WTA prize money to the victims of the Nashville flooding. Over the next few weeks, she will do it all over again in Australia. Bethanie Mattek-Sands (http://www.wtatour.com/player/bethanie-mattek-sands_2257889_5667) has pledged 5% of her prize money from the Moorilla Hobart International (http://www.wtatour.com/page/Tournaments/Info/0,,12781~415,00.html) and the Australian Open (http://www.wtatour.com/page/Tournaments/Info/0,,12781~836,00.html) to Queensland floods, where waters have forced evacuation of thousands of people.

Well maybe then you should take note of how many people responded in disagreement to your original and subsequent posts because it was a harsh assessment of a player who by nature isn't the most extrovert but gives of her time to organise and participate in a very worthy cause. Brisbane is a place close to her heart and her Granddad just died today and YET she still goes out and puts a brave face on it and plays.

I thought the 2nd act of the rally for relief exo with Kim-Sam- and Roger and Rafa made this event a lot more fun to watch when they took it more seriously by hitting the ball much harder then the others. the commentators enjoyed it more as well. i thought the 1st part of this event was pretty boring by all of them playing patty cake tennis with no pace. why would some of you here complain when the other players took the exo more seriously? ether way its just a exo people. loved Kim's forehand shot on the last point. :worship:

Part 1 - A joking mucking around where obviously Andy R and Novak were in the forefront like we all knew they'd be.

Part 2 - with the players more serious and hitting much harder. Liked the tennis like a doubles squash match where they had to hit alternate shots. Made me wonder whether the players played squash and if so how good they were.

I wonder why some players barely play these kind of exhos such as Venus or Sharapova... Seen Sharpie play plenty. Never seen Henin play one, until now...

Pretty good that there were two parts. Like that idea.

I totally agree with you!
The first part was really funny and second part was more serious were we saw better tennis with some great points. But both were great to watch :)

Playing some lucrative exhibitions during the off-season in Thailand is one thing.
Playing a free exhibition one day prior to a Grand Slam is another.

Maria and Venus are great champions and role models.
However, when we compare them to some others players, they don't give much back to the fans and the communities.

The first part was great and incredibly funny.
I didn't get the reason for the serious second part.
They just should have had the first part go longer.

Who cares what anybody thinks? It was for a good cause.

This.

The event was sold out. That's all that matters - ticket sales go towards the charity. Who cares about what the TV audience thinks.
