du Preez back on world stage

The Western Cape teenager pictured on the way to her first national senior title

Cornelia du Preez (18), South Africa's #1 tennis player, is back on the FWTT tour for a second year - and aims to establish herself as a serious contender. The disappointing start to the Hopman Cup is quickly forgotten, as the youngster is going east for ranking points - she travelled east to Sydney on Thursday in an attempt to acclimatise further.

Du Preez spent Christmas at home with her family, taking a well-earned break after a long seven months on the road, but doesn't think she has made a poor choice by becoming professional so early. "I had so much fun with the girls on tour last year," she exclaims, seemingly buoyant about her own life; a bit peculiar, perhaps, for a girl who has lost roughly half of her matches so far, but she is optimistic both about her tennis and her life.

"I got a little too concerned about my game last year, and forgot how lucky I really am - I get to see a lot of the world and travel with these remarkable people, it's great fun and I really hope I can stay free of injuries and constantly improve."

In perhaps the world's most closely fought professional game, many argue that the FWTT lacks a big star to market - there were three World #1s in last year alone, and none of them won any of the Grand Slams. Unsurprisingly, du Preez disagrees.

"I think we have a great tour, and I think that is reflected in the number of new players that we were able to recruit before the season started. Lots of girls are taking up tennis all over the world because they see Taliamanosoko, Wong, Ziyi, Bailly, Kane, Mbangu, Starr, Bartoli on their screens. And even though there are no clear stand-outs, there are still some players who are better than others; there are no easy matches, but conversely, if you start to watch a FWTT match you will probably change your opinion of who's going to win about ten times. And to my mind, that's pretty fun." She did, however, decline to comment on the financial issues which wrecked many exhibitions in the off-season.

Du Preez played some competitive matches in the off-season; she was in Lilongwe for a continental tournament, where she played no real part, but won a South African national title almost without serious competition - in the final, Nosiviwe Mqhayi was sent packing with a 6/3 6/2 scoreline. "Unfortunately there are no other South Africans ready to take the step up yet; I'm hoping to represent a team in the Fed Cup, but I guess that will be confirmed later."

Du Preez is in the top half of the draw at the Sydney Premier tournament, where the top nine players of the world have all entered; she will face #4 Giuseppina Benedetti in the first round, with US Open champion Saba Abid, doubles champion Martine Kartincova, returning multi-titlist Regla Torres and the hugely talented Vietnamese Hillary Nguyen all gathered in her quarter.

Coco has some sort of weird control over Giusa, that was apparent after a straight set win.

Nthama wasn't too confident today against Ziyi but looked very well in her win.

Q: Well the thing to say after the way you played in the last 2 sets would be, 'Welcome Back!'.

A: Haha, I hope that is the case. Its been too long playing tennis that is not my best, very frustrating times and sometimes doubles is the only thing that has kept me going. Its important for me whilst to positive about the way I played today, too remember this is one match I need to string 4 matches together in order to make any impact in this event.

Q: How hard is it breaking through, there are alot of new girls on the tour this year, can you offer them any advice?

A: No I cant and wouldnt want to, for me I have learned this past year being too nice on this tour doesn't always give the greatest effect. You cannot give anybody the impression your a push over on court, its something I learned from Siri's coach at Fed Cup and its really something I have developed over the off-season. Im mentally ready now to make a step up on the tour.

Q: That kind of hard attitude has won and lost players fans in the past, does that worry you?

A: For sure you have to be ever so careful about the way you behave on court, but at the same time I have too move forward in terms of my results. Last year was bad overall, it should and could have been better but I went into everything with this 'nice girl' attitude and it doesnt work out there.

Q: Obviously were coming up to the first grand slam of the year, do you have an insiders perpective on who might take the title?

A: For me there is no out and out winner, its anybodys. For example a first round match I watched here in Sydney by Yelena Pirilenko would have won the title last year in Melbourne. It all comes down to who hits the spot over the fortnight. If anyone deserves it its Siri, even though im biased because she is a good friend, she has the game for it and just needs to be in the right place mentally. She is a talent very capable of winning multiple slams, it would be great to see her get the ball rolling again in Melbourne.

Sick Kathleen ousted in tight 3 setter!
A sick Kathleen Pryde-Degman was unable to win against an in-form Syria Gonzalez, going down in 3 tight sets, 3-6, 6-4, 7-6(3). Kathleen caught the flu overnight and was rather slow moving the whole day. After a successful first set, she was obviously feeling worn down and she went for shots time and again.

"It was a terrible match after the first set. I think the rallies were like 1-2 shots only. But I had no choice. I need to go for my shots. Syria had plenty of energy left and I can't afford to keep up with long rallies. It is been a bad day, but ultimately, the better player won," claims Kathleen.

"I'm still trying to get back in my form when I was a top 10 player, but it is difficult considering what I have been through," Kathleen says, though she declines to comment on what exactly has happened.

On a brighter note, the duo pair of Pryde-Degman and Hingisfrilla won their doubles match.

Destiny Hernich def. Martine Kartincova 1/6, 6/1, 7/6(3)
Dess just keeps on winning and winning and winning. She has taken out the #1 player, the defending Wimbledon Champion, and the defending Aussie Open Champion in Sydney...not to mention hometown favorite Fleri. What a draw!

Jane Wong def. Nthamangela Mbangu 6/4, 3/6, 7/6(4)
This was almost an older sister vs. younger sister match-up as you could see the determination on Nthama's face and the empathy from Jane's. In the end, the older sister secured the win and a place in the finals.

Doubles Results, Semifinals

Mensarb/Young def. Hernich/Nguyen 6/3, 3/6, 7/6(3)
This was an odd semifinal of a Premeir tournament, but Jook and Amita took advantage, advancing to the finals.

Abid/Selez def. Hingisafrilia/Pryde-Degman 6/4, 7/5
The Aussie crowd lost their last chance at a title with this defeat and we have the most interesting doubles final with all players outside the top 40 in the rankings.

Why retire nthama ?

Anyway , Jane is haPpy to be in final but will not win her next match based on points ( sorry for the spoiler ;) ) but she will like to focus on her upcoming grand slam and hope to achieve good results especially in doubles !

Singles Results, Finals

Destiny Hernich def. Jane Wong 1/6, 7/5, 6/2
Wow - Destiny has made her debut in 2011 with a shine! She has taken out a litany of players who have careers longer than her life and she epitomizes this by defeating the original veteran, Jane Wong, in the final in tight three setter.

Abid/Selez def. Mensarb/Young 7/6(0), 7/5
Patsy and Saba randomly decided to play this event and it paid off as they shockingly come away with the doubles title.
