Fatima Mayou def. Alesandra Kirilova 6/4, 6/3
Fatima gets a rare win against a very tired Alesandra.

[4]Athea Kane def. BYE
Athea held on to #1 for a week and lost it, now has a lot to defend to stay in the top 5.

Harper is back to Australia where she loves it and is looking for success again.

Tami Lamy-Chappuis def. Annalisa Benedetti 6/3, 3/6, 7/6(0)
Annalisa, like some of the other newcomers, had her heart broken today in such a tight match, but Tami has had incredible experience, with over 10 years on the tour.

Magdalena Bitchesova def. Valerie Gallet 7/6(5), 6/1
Magda struggled at first but calmed herself down to cruise past Valerie.

[2]Siri Cornetsson def. BYE
Siri improved dramatically in 2010 and hopes to keep up that same status for the new year.

Let the new season begin...

http://www.tribuneindia.com/2001/20010124/sp2.gif

Former Top 5 player Jennifer Casanova had a tough year in 2010. After her break-through year in 2009, when she won her first Grand Slam title of her career at the French Open and reached the finals of the YEC, media and experts expected her to make a deep run in 2010, looking for more titles and being a GS-contender. But the story was a different one.

She still had a good start in 2010, reaching the semifinals in Auckland, but losing to unknown Betty Suarez as the top seeded player. She lost early at the Australian Open and struggled to get back-to-back wins in the following tournaments. When the FWTT Tour changed the surface, she hoped to gain her confidence back which helped her to win her first GS title. Suddenly, she feld better again and had some better results on clay, not even her favourite surface. Even as she lost in the Quarterfinals of the French Open, she was happy with the way she was playing again, but another smaller slump came up during the American Hardcourt Season.

"You know, I think hardcourt favours my game the most and I always want to play well during the US summer, but it somehow never really works. Even at the my home slam at the US Open, I always had trouble winning matches".

Jennifer was looking for the end of season, at that time having fallen out of the Top 10 in both singles and doubles, when she got to Beijing to play the Premier Mandatory tournament, the China Open. "I had played there before but I never really performed that well and being unseeded, I didn't really expect much of the tournament"

But she surprised everyone, beating several top ranked and seeded players along her way to the title and even reached the doubles final with her longtime doubles partner Daniela Breskova. "You know, reaching another final with Daniela was a perfect end to our doublespartnership. We had a fantastic season in 2009, winning many titles and playing so well and even in 2010, we won another two titles together. But we talked to each other and decided to look for new partners in 2011, but whenever we're playing the same tournaments and our regular partners aren't there, we'll surely play together. I had a wonderful time with her on court and I always enjoyed playing with her."

During the off-season, former world number one and champion Ruflina Talimanosoko announced that her permanent doubles partner, former Wimbledon winner Paula Masterton will say good-bye to the FWTT Tour and will only play a certain amount of tournaments in 2011 before retiring at the end of the season. She was looking for a new doubles partner and found one in Jennifer Casanova.

"You know, I always liked Ruflina and we had played over 9 times already against each other, even played the final of the French Open. So it was an honour for me when she asked me to be her partner in 2011. I will mostly partner her except for a couple of tournaments where she'll play with Paula in her last season together. I hope we'll play well together and I'm looking forward to the 2011 season."

Beeing seeded 5# and playing her first tournament of the season in Auckland was the first step in the right direction for Jennifer Casanova. She reached the finals, beating her doubles partner and top seed Ruflina Talimanosoko in the semifinals and beat Jookarae Mensarb in three tough sets to win the very first tournament of the 2011 season and the first since her win at the China Open during autumn 2010.

But not only in singles she raised the trophy, Ruflina and her, being the second seeded pair in the doubles draw, played some great matches as well and reached their first final together, beating Kirilenko/Patersson in three tie-breakers to win the title.

"I mean, what can I say? There's no better start you can have in a new season, doing the double at a tournament. It was a fantastic week and the hard work during the off-season really paid off and I'm looking forward to the 2011 season, I want to enjoy tennis again!"
